Peter De Vries once wrote: “Man is vile, I know, but people are wonderful.” Ample modern sources focus on the vileness, but the more rewarding study is of how a select few wonderful people have been able to positively influence history. This collection of David McCullough’s essays focuses on remarkable Americans ranging from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Harry Truman, many who arose from unprepossessing backgrounds to go on to great accomplishments. He also highlights authors and painters who also have contributed to our history by influencing the world through their imagination, skill, and effort. Short pieces: a paean to the typewriter, how to get one idea across to a US president, and a method for parents to sneak an extra 30 minutes of sleep on Christmas morning, round out the collection. The essays are short, pithy and exemplify the writing that has made his books so engaging and widely read. What distinguishes the individuals he writes about, as well as other productive Americans? McCullough unabashedly endorses the importance of perseverance: “Work got us where we are. Easy does it has never done it for us and never will. We are the beneficiaries of men and women who toiled ten, twelve hours a day on farms, on railroads, in mines, in mills, at kitchen sinks and drafting tables.” Skeptics be warned: Here is Thomas Carlyle: “No sadder proof can be given by a man of his own littleness than disbelief in great men.” Readers of history new to David McCullough will find this book an excellent introduction to his work and will help them find other worthwhile authors as well. Those familiar with his previous books will find these essays crisp, engaging and informative. Highly recommended.

This is one of the finest books that I have ever read. McCullough makes history alive in these various essays devoted to especially to people and why Americans today are historically illiterate mostly because of boring teachers or boring writing. Reading these little gems you should find history exciting as it is not only our road in the past, but it is also our road to the present and a guide to the future since it is about people and how they lived their lives just as we do today.

Interesting but not captivating. Maybe it's better as an audio book. The stories told deviated from the title...history matters. Done.
