Theater Kid: A Broadway Memoir

Description:

The New Yorker Best Book of the Year

A coming-of-age tale from one of the most successful American producers of our time, Jeffrey Seller, who is the only producer to have mounted two Pulitzer Prize–winning musicals—Hamilton and Rent.

Before he was producing the musical hits of our generation, Jeffrey was just a kid coming to terms with his adoption, trying to understand his sexuality, and determined to escape his dysfunctional household in a poor neighborhood just outside Detroit. We see him find his voice through musical theater and move to New York, where he is determined to shed his past and make a name for himself on Broadway.

But moving to the big city is never easy—especially not at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis—and Jeffrey learns to survive and thrive in the colorful and cutthroat world of commercial theatre. From his early days as an office assistant, to meeting Jonathan Larson and experiencing the triumph and tragedy of
Rent, to working with Lin-Manuel Miranda on In the Heights and Hamilton, Jeffrey completely pulls back the curtain on the joyous and gut-wrenching process of making new musicals, finding new audiences, and winning a Tony Award—all the while finding himself.

Told with Jeffrey’s candid and captivating voice,
Theater Kid is a gripping memoir about fighting through a hardscrabble childhood to make art on one’s own terms, chasing a dream against many odds, and finding acceptance and community.

“Seller, the producer of such lauded musicals as Rent, In the Heights, and Hamilton, chronicles his path from Michigan to Broadway in this graceful memor….He is bracingly forthright about the harsh realities of the industry, as when he mentions a producer who was more upset about a star losing his voice than about a promoter who had just died by suicide.”The New Yorker

“In this searing and inspiring memoir, Jeffrey Seller writes the book he wishes he’d had as a kid; about a wildly brilliant, closeted young man from tough circumstances in Detroit who finds his way into the wilds of New York and helps develop and support some of the most innovative musical theater of the twentieth and twenty-first century. It belongs on your shelf next to

“I loved reading the wonderful, inspiring adventures of Jeffrey Seller’s life and career. If you feel like an outsider from the poorest part of town, take heart, your dreams can come true.”
—Bernadette Peters

“One of the great American coming-of-age stories,
Theater Kid exhilarates and transports. The family Jeffrey Seller portrays here is as unique and indelible as any in American literature. Courageous, honest, and compulsively readable, this book will join the very short shelf of indispensable books on the American stage.”—Oskar Eustis, artistic director, The Public Theater

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful memoir!

This was a great read. Once I started this book, I couldn’t put it down which is not always the case for me. How he started out and where he ended up was truly amazing. It’s also nice to know that there are parents out there, although it’s not the life they wanted for their kid, who believe in their path. This was a wonderful memoir and I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Jeffrey Seller

J.F. · May 8, 2025

Thank you, Jeffrey Seller for this intimate glimpse into your life and Broadway producing career. The combination of awkwardness, pain, and joy of discovering one's sexuality and experiencing first love resonated with me. The heart of the book in my opinion was the story of the musical Rent. I'm a big fan of the show, and I was thoroughly engrossed with Seller's account of the progression of the show from workshop to Broadway. A must-read for current and former theater kids and Broadway fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read for theater nerds

T. · July 28, 2025

While this book started slow - I was less interested in his childhood years than I was his college and NYC, I ultimately found it to be too short. I wish Seller had been able to dedicate as much time to Hamilton as he did RENT. I found the underlying narrative of his long term relationships interesting as well as his personal concerns about the AIDS scare paralleled those of the theater community in which he worked. The inside pool about being a booking agent was fascinating for this theater nerd. A good read

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Read for All Who Love Theater!

J.F.S. · June 30, 2025

For a theater buff like me reading this book was a thrill. To be present at the development of such shows as RENT, IN THE HEIGHTS, AVENUE Q and HAMILTON made me feel I was part of the creative team! I am so fortunate to have seen RENT and AVENUE Q on Broadway. I was so fortunate to have seen IN THE HEIGHTS Off Broadway the night Lin Manuel Miranda announced the shows move to Broadway. I haven't seen HAMILTON but read the book that inspired it and listened to the album multiple times with the brilliant lyrics in front of me. I am only a few years older than Jeffery Seller but his career in the theater matched mine as an audience member. What a privilege it has been to have seen the work of these great artists and what a privilege it has been to read about Mr. Sellers life and learn how these great works were created. This was a thrilling read!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love theater…

L.K. · September 2, 2025

…you’ll love this story. It’s about a terrific kid who overcame a challenging childhood by embracing Broadway theater. And about how he helped to revolutionize theater to make it relevant, modern, and great fun. I recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars He's been there-- he KNOWS!

R. · August 15, 2025

Superb theatre biography -- and deals with what it takes to mount a contemporary Broadway show. Not a lot of first person accounts on this vital subject ( well, vital to theatre folks!) Very readable and engaging. Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow start, but insightful look at Rent and other Broadway hits

B. · June 19, 2025

It takes some time to get through his childhood, but Jeffrey Seller's memoir gains momentum when he arrives in New York, and it really takes off when he talks about Jonathan Larson and the events leading to Rent becoming a genre-defining smash hit. I wish there was more on In the Heights and Hamilton and what it took to make those shows what they became. It seems like there's a lot of Seller's history post-Rent that is left unspoken beyond Avenue Q, In the Heights, and Hamilton--are there modest successes and failures that could have been chronicled, too?
