Chapter 1: Makoto CHAPTER 1 Makoto
Her name is on a list of the dead.

I squint in the stinging sunlight, scrutinizing every name inked onto the banner. Hers sits among the eight others, likely overlooked beneath the prince’s crowning the top. But despite being on the list, our future Enforcer will easily evade the death awaiting the other contestants. Because these Trials were made for Elites like him. Not Elites like her.

My eyes skim over the list once again, recognizing no other names. I’ve never been one to keep up with what Elites manage to wrangle enough relevance to make it into the Trials.

A shoulder collides with mine, followed by several other limbs pushing against me. Loot is swimming with sticky bodies and echoing shouts of celebration, further adding to the list of reasons why I would rather be anywhere else but the slums of Ilya. It’s a struggle to push my way through the crowded street, every inch of it crawling with ignorance incarnate. Every inch cheering for each contestant they chose to represent Loot.

I push through the crowd, ignoring their celebrations.

They have done nothing more than send Mundanes and Defensive Elites to their deaths.

And she is one of them.

But it should be me. Me who dies brutally. Dies alone. Dies at all.

Chants in honor of the sixth ever Purging Trials ring in my ears, each word a reminder of what I’ve done—nothing.

I’ve spent my whole life huddling in her shadow, hiding from life itself. And now she has been chosen simply because she did nothing of the sort. The people knew her, loved the street magic she performed as a Veil. And yet, they sentence her to death under the guise of honor.

She is a Defensive. Therefore, she is dead.

And I need to find her.

My hands are still streaked with coal dust, leathers clinging to my sweaty body as though I’m still hammering steel over a scalding fire. I had worked through the night and was continuing still when the commotion managed to drag me from the shop.

I should have gone to see her last night. Should have been there when she found out.

And now I’m shoving through a sea of people, attempting to find her before it’s too late. I scan the packed street, catching sight of a coach rumbling toward the end of it. It screeches to a halt, the horses nearly as impatient as the drivers eager to escape the slums.

I sure as hell know how that feels.

I’m shoved forward when the congested crowd begins flocking toward the coach, crowding it as though they’re offering free rides out of this shithole. Begrudgingly, I allow myself to be swept forward, managing to catch a glimpse of her climbing inside.

An Imperial ushers her up the step, and in typical Hera fashion, she shyly thanks him as though he’s not escorting her to her doom. Her sleek black hair is the last thing I see before she’s swallowed by the four walls, sitting in the belly of the coach.

The world seems to quiet, slow its spinning with each shaky breath I manage.

I didn’t get to say goodbye.

My thumb finds the scar cutting crookedly through my lips, tracing it like I had the day my life truly became a secret. A familiar numbness begins to bleed over my body, bathing every bit of me in bitterness.

I’m about to turn away, unable to watch her be paraded toward her death.

That’s when a flash of silver catches my eye.

I peer over the dozens of heads dotting the street, watch her walk toward the coach with hair that tells me all I need to know.

So, this is the famous Silver Savior.

Word of her saving Prince Kai managed to reach even my ears—evidence of how significant she’s become among the slums. Perhaps I’m a skeptic, or simply the only logical person living in the vicinity, but I’m not entirely convinced by her battle with a Silencer. A battle that the future Enforcer himself couldn’t win.

And I know exactly what it’s like to be in Kai’s shoes.

I’m watching her climb into the coach when a hopping figure captures my attention. Dark curls bounce with each attempt to see over the crowd. Her hands are raised, waving haphazardly at the Silver Savior. She’s shouting something that looks quite heartfelt, likely a wasted goodbye that will never be heard.

I lean over a pair of young women who are chanting terribly off-key to the rest of the street. Her features grow more blurry with each hop off the ground, making it difficult to focus on them. But something about her seems faintly familiar, as though this isn’t the first time I’ve been graced by the presence of her perpetual perkiness.

I roll my eyes when recognition rams into me.

Oh, I know exactly who this is. In fact, I believe she even made it onto my ever-growing list of reasons to never leave my shop.

I was buying supplies from a merchant who was just as eager to take my money as I was to retreat back into my glorified shed. It was with a bundle of leather tucked beneath my arm and a severe lack of pep in my step that I heard the most absurdly bubbly sales pitch.

And that’s when I saw her, curly hair bouncing with each energetic bob of her head. A plethora of clothing piled around her while she described what is commonly known as a blue shirt with about a dozen more words than necessary.

I may have said a thing or two, though the details of our conversation were hardly interesting enough for me to waste time recalling now.

That was several weeks ago now, but there is no mistaking that the girl currently waving a crazed set of hands down the street is the same seamstress who sells on the corner of an alley.

And she’s a Phaser. I know that much about her. Well, that, and her astounding ability to never tire of talking.

I watch her blow kisses to the Silver Savior, so many that I brace myself to witness her faint. But she does nothing of the sort, leaving me to continue watching the endearing embodiment of her affections for this girl.

There is no mistaking the sincerity in each flailing wave and shouted sentiment. This seamstress knows the Silver Savior, and quite personally by the looks of it. Likely enough to do just about anything for her.

My mind races recklessly, scheming. A horribly impulsive plan begins to form, one that should likely never leave the confines of my mind, let alone be executed at all.

But this just might work.

That is typically what one thinks right before everything goes to shit.

Then again, one might argue that things couldn’t possibly get any shittier.

Powerful by Lauren Roberts is a companion novella to Powerless, offering a deeper exploration of Adena’s journey and emotional growth. This book shifts focus from the high-stakes trials of Powerless to a more intimate, character-driven story set in the unforgiving world of Loot. Through its themes of resilience, love, and self-discovery, Powerful delivers an emotional punch despite its shorter length.Adena – Once sheltered and dependent on others, Adena is thrust into a world where survival is no longer a luxury. Her kindness, empathy, and determination remain her defining traits, making her an easy character to root for. Her growth from someone who needs protection to someone capable of standing on her own is one of the novella’s biggest strengths.Makoto (Mak) Khitan – The grumpy blacksmith with a hidden heart of gold, Mak is the perfect contrast to Adena’s warmth. His past is shrouded in mystery, and his reluctance to let anyone in adds a layer of tension to their growing relationship. His quiet yet unwavering devotion makes him a compelling love interest.Unlike the controlled setting of the trials in Powerless, Powerful takes place in the slums of Loot, where survival is uncertain, and danger lurks in every corner. The setting adds urgency to Adena’s journey, making her growth feel earned. The story trades large-scale conflicts for personal stakes, focusing on survival, companionship, and self-worth.Lauren Roberts excels at evoking emotions, making even the quiet moments between characters feel impactful. The prose remains as vivid and immersive as in Powerless, painting a rich picture of both setting and emotions. While the book is short, the story feels complete, with a satisfying arc for Adena and Mak. The novella balances hope and heartbreak, making the emotional moments hit hard. The relationship between Adena and Mak carries the story, full of tension, longing, and quiet understanding. At its core, this is a story of finding strength in the face of adversity.Strengths✔ Strong Character Development – Adena’s transformation is inspiring, and Mak’s layers make him an unforgettable character.✔ Emotional Depth – The book captures love, loss, and resilience beautifully.✔ Engaging Romance – The grumpy-sunshine dynamic between Adena and Mak is both heartwarming and compelling.✔ Well-Written for a Novella – Despite its brevity, the story feels rich and complete.Powerful is a beautifully written, emotionally resonant novella that expands on the world of Powerless while standing on its own as a heartfelt story of survival and love. Adena and Mak’s journey is one of growth, healing, and quiet strength, making this a must-read for fans of the series. Though it lacks the fast-paced action of Powerless, its emotional impact more than makes up for it.I literally could not crying in my class and they stare at me like "why is this girl crying?". Powerful stole my heart and now I cannot wait for Fearless⭐5/5 – A tender and emotional companion novel that shines with strong character development and romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars So so sad!!

K. · September 9, 2025

Why oh why did I read this?!? 😩Powerful is a novella within the Powerless book series. It serves as number 1.5 and should be read between book one, Powerless, and book two, Reckless.Powerful tells the background story of a character who actually dies at the end of Powerless. So going into reading this short novella, we already know the character has died. It shouldn’t completely destroy us again to read the same ending, right?WRONG.This book ruined me, just like it did my teen daughter. We get this very sweet, innocent, beautiful story about a beloved character only to have our hearts ripped out… again.I know I needed to read Powerful because the storyline will weave in and out of future books, but I almost wish I had skipped it because it was just so sad. Why do the most sunshine characters have to be the ones sacrificed?!I did recently attend an event where author Lauren Roberts shared that her favorite quote from the entire series is actually in Powerful, so I’m grateful I understand what she means… See you in the sky. 🩵

5.0 out of 5 stars A story I didn’t know I needed!!

B. · July 17, 2024

The media could not be loaded. Powerful by Lauren RobertsMy Book Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (not my favorite, but it’s good!)SPOILER FREE REVIEW: what an absolute pleasant surprise! I actually REALLY liked this read. I had no idea that I needed Adena’s story and now I’m sitting here wondering how I ever read Powerless without it. Seriously considering restarting the series with a tandem read! Added waaayyy more to Adena’s character that I only now realized we were so sorely lacking. If you’ve read Powerless then the ending to Powerful is pretty much spoiled for you…don’t let that stop you! This book introduces a new character that I could easily see becoming more relevant in book three. Give it a shot!I’ve seen the Powerless Triology suggested alongside a lot of other books with smut. I believe Lauren has stated that she will be keeping this trilogy YA. But seriously don’t let that stop you. This was such a fun, light read!COVER/JACKET - I’m a big stickler for keeping design elements consistent over the length of a series…uuggghh. Where to start. Okay, okay. I realize this is a novella so I’ll cut it SOME slack. But…man. I just wish they would have chosen some different elements for this book. To start, I think the cover is beautiful and so perfectly illustrated Aden’a story. It doesn’t quite match the design elements of Powerless/Reckless. But again…novella. So I’ll let it slide. Under the jacket the front hardcover is blank. Why?? I wish they would have continued the simplistic design of the other two and added the needle/thread in silver on the front. I feel like that was a sore miss. On the spine, text treatment seems similar to the other two (won’t get into the Powerless/Reckless differences here…), but why the gap between author and title??? And the book size. AGAIN. Novella. But… :( I could have easily seen this differentiated enough just by being white and the same size as the others. All of this is nitpicky, but this might be the final straw in teaching myself how to book bind just so I can have a copy of the same size as the others for my shelf! 😂PRODUCT/SHIPPING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Arrived on time in great condition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why so small?

Not Bolos fault but the book is small and this was better than the series 😂

I was really dreading reading this before finally moving on Fearless, but it was great! it was such a bittersweet and quick story. i couldn't put it down and read it all in one night. I wish we could've gotten more of their story together!

5.0 out of 5 stars YA series

In love with this book series. This novella was amazing and even made me emotional. Great YA series! The special edition sprayed edge is a nice touch too.

Fantasy, Romance, Heart ache

POWERFUL - LAUREN ROBERTSIf you are not sure about this book/series, what are you doing? I can tell you now this series is EVERYTHING. It warms your heart in ways I cannot fathom but also crumbles and smashes your itsy bitsy heart to pieces. But books am I right? Hahaha ✨fictional men✨Enjoy 😘I can’t deal with this book. Lauren Robert’s you have officially broke my heart all over again. I just cannot express how much I love this series. As a reader it’s nice to have characters that you can actually like, with Lauren Robert’s though, you can connect and feel with the characters. You fall in love with them. You route for them. I’ve never had a book/series like this. And I am so stumped that it’s not July yet because I want Reckless, like yesterday!!This is a Powerless Story through the eyes of our beloved Adena. She’s a seamstress who has stitched her and Paeydn a life in the slums. Adena stitches and creates clothing whilst Paedyn steals those ridiculously good sticky buns. Now if you’ve read Powerless like myself you already know what happens - I’m not gonna spoil it for you though if you haven’t.This novella is incredible and the character development for Makoto is sublime - I’d love to know if he’s a main character for Reckless, or will we get a novella from his POV? Lauren let us know please ;)This book literally tugs on my heart strings and I have to admit I did shed some tears. There’s literally not enough words for me to write about this book; so instead I’ll share with you some of my favourite quotes 🤍✨Powerful quotes⚔️“See you in the sky”⚔️“You make even the stars envious, because one day - far from now - you will be up there beside them, outshining every single one”⚔️“You are the sweetest thing I have never tasted. And I doubt I’ve craved anything more.”⚔️“I think you’re my little piece of perfection.”⚔️“I’ve spent my whole life wishing to be wanted. And here he is, begging me to let him.”Fictional men, ummm helloooo? Makoto and Kai are putting out competition for all you lovely lot so step up your game ;)Powerless was a good story and I know it was left on a cliffhanger ish, on purpose but there was so much tension throughout the book that I was kinda sad we didn’t get our happy ending. However now that I’ve read Powerful, I completely understand why that book was left the way it was, and why the things happened the way they did. Also I’m pretty sure we got an extra chapter of Reckless in this novella am I right?? Because HELLO!!Honestly I cannot put together the words or even string a whole sentence together with the amount of love I have for this book. It has truly cured my reading slump because I was so sick of buying books and then DNFing them.Following Adena’s character is amazing, her POV is so bubbly and fun and very glass half full, looking on life. Like her situation is in lamens terms, she’s homeless. But she uses this to sew pretty clothes, indulge on sticky buns with her best friend and spends countless nights counting stars. Her character is simply lovely, she’s such a bundle of joy and I love how Robert’s has been able to perceive that character and really put it across to the reader. It’s not too descriptive but it’s not boring either, it’s just enough so you can really feel the connection with the character.Overall - 5 STARS!If I could give this book more stars I would 🤍Lauren I love you, your writing is effervescent ✨⚔️🤍

Beautiful!!!!
