5.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Novel
Julie Hatcher, Author of “Not Quite By the Book” has written an enjoyable, memorable, and nostalgic novel. The genres for this story are Romance, Adult Fiction, Women’s Domestic Fiction, Life Fiction, and Sister’s Fiction with a dash of wit. The themes surrounding this story are finding yourself, and living your best life and the importance of family, friends, neighbors, and community. In this well written novel the author also discusses the importance of communication, honesty, love and hope. Julie Hatcher vividly describes her colorful and dramatic characters as complex and complicated. The protagonist of the story, Emma Rini has always admired Emily Dickinson. Working in the family’s bookstore, Emma has been responsible for the financial and literary success. Emma has been the rock of the family, and has been there to help when there is sickness, or a problem. She belongs to an online book community, and and stays up to date on bookish news. When her parents discuss retirement, and her married sister is pregnant, Emma realizes that she will be needed to run the store by herself. Emma decides that she needs a break, and decides to get away back in time. Emma rents an old house, and is determined to make a list of things similar to what Emily Dickinson might do.In the small community she is visiting, are a colorful cast of characters. There are some delightful and witty moments in the story. Of course there is one lovable dog. Emma attempts to add a small garden for the short time she will be staying. It does look very lovely, and at first one rabbit, and then the rabbit’s family seem to enjoy it! Emma has to make certain adjustments when she cooks. The owner and architect who takes care of the house certainly has his hands full. Emma does get mystery flowers, and romantic letters. She does live the list that she writes, and Emma shows growth in her decisions. I highly recommend this heart-felt and thought-provoking story.
4.0 out of 5 stars The characters, setting, and plot are engaging
Not Quite by the Book is a soft romance, one that flows through the pages without bashing you in the face. Emma has some familial conflict in her life right now and decides to leave her family’s bookstore for a few weeks respite. Her destination is the hometown of Emily Dickinson, not too far away. As she pacifies her family, including her pregnant sister, Emma tries her best to live as Emily lived. Things keep going wrong, however, and her savior ends up being the landlord she finds herself distractingly attracted to and irritated with at the same time. While the secret admirer is glaringly obvious and predictable, the story was fun. When you’re taken advantage of for too long, you tend to do crazy things like take leave, run to a different town, and try to live like your favorite poet. Maybe that’s just Emma. I tend to get to the end of my rope and then get a divorce, but that’s just me. We all handle these types of situations differently. Emma probably could have been a little less selfish and sat her family down to talk instead of dropping a bombshell and then running away. If she’d done that though, we wouldn’t have the story Not Quite by the Book.I enjoyed the story. The characters, setting, and plot are engaging. The book is full of excellent imagery and character development. The author's writing style is fluid, the pacing is perfect, and the story is so easy to read that I couldn’t believe I was almost done already. I found myself engaged and completely captivated in the story from the very beginning.

📚Review📚3.🌟📖Book: 21/78📚 Title:Not Quite by the Book✍️Author:Julie Hatcher, Julie Anne Lindsey📄Pages: 317💫Genre:Fiction•Romance••••••••••••••••••••••••📝Synopsis 📝Emma is in a rut, and she will soon be taking over her parents bookstore. She decides to take a vacation and live life similar to her favorite poet Ms. Emily Dickinson. Putting herself once for once, she swears off love, leaves her pregnant sister who’s due any day now, and her parents who are ready for retirement in her rear view mirror. Meanwhile, shes been having an internet friendship with someone who shares a deep connection with her. Will she give love another go or will she become a recluse like Dickinson?💭My Thoughts 💭This was cute, but it fell a bit short for me. The plot felt underdeveloped, but I loved the family drama element. I also loved seeing Emma evolve and fond herself. We all knew it was Davis, but I feel the authors dragged that aspect out a bit too much which in turn made our FMC look ditzy. Predictable? Yes, but it was also a clean romance, so it’s the perfect choice for your teen niece, your mom or grandmother that shouldn’t be or don’t care for reading naughty things🤭 In Rizzo’s words, “She’s too pure to be pink.”
5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful!
This was so fun and different. Emma is so tired of the burden of caring for everyone and then feels guilty about being tired of it so she leaves home for six weeks to collect herself in her last opportunity to do so, and it was just a great book. She wants to live Like Emily Dickinson and it’s so funny to see her have trouble with trying to cook old recipes or having the house, not work right, and she makes great people and has wonderful experiences. Just such an enjoyable book.
An intriguing and thought provoking story.
This book about life, family, choices and romance kept me enthralled from cover to cover. I loved the premise of Emma almost going back in time and living in an old home with all of its quirks and faults in a town she loved and trying to emulate her favourite author. I couldn’t wait to find out if Emma would complete her task list or make some other life choices and find love. The romance was intriguing even if Emma was a bit slow on figuring out the intended. I enjoyed Davis and his multiple facets but did not like his initial motive, even if understandable. These inconsistencies did not however detract from my thorough enjoyment of the story; if anything, they made it more believable and heartfelt. I would love to read an epilogue or a sequel to find out more about Emma, Davis and their families.
a delightful fun charming read
Our main character Emma, has priortitised the family bookshop business in her life over everything else. She decides to take a holiday away from the bookshop and her usual life before her sister has her baby and her parents retire. Emma goes to stay in a cottage, in the town where her favorite author, Emily Dickson, used to reside. She’ll be a hermit, and live out her Emily Dickinson fantasies, during her vacation and also make some decisions about her own future. With no internet Emma loves her temporary switched off life in this quaint small town where everyone knows everyone. Emma had thought she would never find love but finds herself falling love with the small town and the residents, she even has a secret admirer sending her flowers. This was such a delightful read, I found myself also falling in love with the characters and the village lifestyle. I was initially drawn to this book of course because from the cover and title it was obviously about books to some degree which is always a huge draw card for me but it was so much more than a cute bookstore read. I loved being along for Emma's self discovery journey and seeing how she grew and developed relationships with people and reconnections in her life. A delightful read that will leave you with a warm heart and a smile on your face. #notquitebythebook #juliehatcher #lakeunionpublishing #tea_sipping_bookworm #getlitsy #thestorygraph #Bolokindle #bookqueen #bookstagram
Uniquely beautiful
This story reminded me of ‘You’ve got Mail’. It is so beautifully written after the first chapter Emma pulls you into a world where you want her to win. To be the hero in her own story and to finally realise she is worthy of love. You want her to be the Jayne Eyre or Elizabeth Bennett. It is wonderful. I perfect autumn read, where are can curl up on the sofa and read throughout the cold months.
Enjoyed it!
Good book!
Warm and cheerful
Not By The Book is a warm and cheerful read which had me yearning to book an extended holiday in a drafty Victorian mansion.Emma and Davis are delightfully earnest and kind, each on their own journey of self discovery. Emma’s energy and introspection was contagious and empowering. Whilst I found the plot a little scattered at times, with occasional lulls in the pacing, overall this was a quaint and warm read.I enjoyed the many literary references, and the obvious homage to You’ve Got Mail. The town of Amherst made for an atmospheric and romantic setting, and the letter writing classes such a quaint setting. A lovely read for anyone looking for a cosy and bookish romance.
