Description:

After a year in captivity, a kidnapped child escapes―only to reveal horrific truths that lead her psychologist on a race against time in this thriller from New York Times bestselling author Mike Omer.

When eight-year-old Kathy Stone turns up on the side of the road a year after her abduction, the world awaits her harrowing story. But Kathy doesn’t say a word. Traumatized by her ordeal, she doesn’t speak at all, not even to her own parents.

Child therapist Robin Hart is the only one who’s had success connecting with the girl. Robin has been using play therapy to help Kathy process her memories. But as their work continues, Kathy’s playtime takes a grim turn: a doll stabs another doll, a tiny figurine is chained to a plastic toy couch. All of these horrifying moments, enacted within a Victorian doll house. Every session, another toy dies.

But the most disturbing detail? Kathy seems to be playacting real unsolved murders.

Soon Robin wonders if Kathy not only holds the key to the murders of the past but if she knows something about the murders of the future. Can Robin unlock the secrets in Kathy’s brain and stop a serial killer before he strikes again? Or is Robin’s work with Kathy putting her in the killer’s sights?

I enjoyed this mystery. It was well paced and had interesting characters. I found the romance part predictable and would have enjoyed it more without it. I would read more by this author. Good prime pick.

I was hooked from the beginning. I kept guessing what I thought was going to happen and nope! Suspenseful and well written. I enjoyed the narration as well.

This is a unique premise: a therapist treating a traumatized child while dealing with her own past, and unraveling a mystery in real time. The pace and suspense keep you hooked from chapter to chapter, making it a pretty quick read.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Almost Did Not Finish It

L.O. · November 29, 2024

This book was a decent read, but I almost did not finish it because it seemed to be dragging along in the beginning. It took too many unnecessary turns. For example all of the day of the event recollections from different characters. Those were a waste of time and pages. The storyline was good, but it took way too long to get to the point. I rarely go to the end of a book to see how everything turns out. In this case I did because the other alternative was to just put the book down and never return to it. I personally can’t bear the thought of starting something and not finishing it. So, going to the final few chapters saved this book for me. Those chapters made me want to go back and see how the suspect got to that final point. It is a good read if you like suspense. Give it a try because everyone is different. I just prefer books that move along with so much intention, that you do not want to put it down. This one dragged along, but had some chapters that I actually read and didn’t skim through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome twist!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a unique story with more twists than a tornado

j.M. · June 6, 2025

I love thrillers and the more I get sucked into twists in the story, the better. Usually I can guess the surprise ending 3/4 in....this had me right up to the reveal. I read this in less than a day through blurry eyes to get to the final reveal. Each character was true to their story role. Each was believable with strengths and doubts---even the narcissists. Nothing was too rushed. A thriller from the point of a child therapist was a whole new genre. The romantic element didn't seem cliché. If I were teaching creative writing, this one book could be the only example all semester of how to craft a realistic, absorbing template for powerful, believable writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good book

It took me a while to get into the book but once I got into it, I couldn’t stop reading it. I liked the ending and it kept me guessing. Worth picking up!

Didn’t See It Coming

B. · February 15, 2024

I thought I was rather clever, guessing the bad guy early in the piece. A few subtle hints was all it took. The frustration built when the other characters couldn’t see what was so plainly obvious…But I was wrong.

Good read

Good reading. Kept me reading. Would recommend

Absolutely brilliant

S.m. · November 15, 2023

What an amazing read.. it had everything I wanted from a good thriller, it kept me on the edge on my seat, I had my “oh god no” moment that is essential intact I think I had 3 or 4 in the story, it was fast pasted. I 100% didn’t get who the killer was.. and I had 3 guesses and was still wrong!! And I was so invested in Robin and Kathy from the get go. That’s one of the things I love about Mike Omer writing.. I always care about the characters and that pulls me into the story and makes what’s happening more emotional. There was a slow burn romance which added a little something extra as that’s a complete different emotion and also I feel added some urgency in some of the situations that would have been there anyway, but in a different way. All In all I loved it!! It is a must read. The next part of my review is a spoiler and is for any one with triggers who is thinking of NOT reading, if this isn’t you don’t read on.Even though this story start with a child abduction for over a year, There is absolutely no child sexual abuse in this book. There is no graphic mistreatment of children. The victims are all adults. I hope this helps and that you give it a try even if you have child abduction trigger as it’s a really good story and watching Kathy grow and deal with being away from her parent for so long was brilliant. She as a character is really strong.

A good thriller
