5.0 out of 5 stars Epic
This brilliant book truly is inspiration packaged for anyone human. I honestly found it so hard to put down as soon as I started reading (amazing flow that not all authors can achieve). It is eye opening, and encouraging in an epic way. If you don't consider yourself to be an artist, it will prove you wrong and show you there are so many hidden forms of art that now feel like secrets which need more exposure. If you do consider yourself to be an artist, it will show you several doorways to leveling up. The incredible message in this book about our shared history, what we are creating in this moment, and what happens moving forward is so important. This can help bring us together as a species. Even if you don't want to be a professional artist, I believe you must read this and play with the guided creativity. Just attempting can be good for your spirit, and it's very welcoming how he invites you to explore this for yourself. James McCrae has an exquisite way of presenting some of life's most fascinating artists and telling their stories. His writing style makes it feel like a friend is sharing info with me, which is refreshing. I sincerely wish every young person who's ready to figure out the adult life ahead of them could have access to this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than a guidebook
I've put off writing this review because I didn't think I could do the book justice, and I probably can't but here goes. The subtitle is "The Essential Guidebook for Reclaiming your Creativity" and I agree with that, but it's SO much more. Part information (and fascinating history), part inspiration, part motivation, and part guidance and helpful tips (but not too much because true to the title The Art of You, James recognizes that creativity comes from within and will look different for everyone}I wish I could have read this guidebook in my late teens or twenties. At that age we don't always know that others too wrestle with self-doubt and with the "inner critic". As the book says "A little self-doubt is good for you. It builds character and keeps you motivated to improve. . . However, too much self-doubt is never good. We have to acknowledge the inner critic, say Thank you for your input, and proceed anyway. The mind is like the weather, always changing, and we must have the determination to persevere through all conditions, the rain and sunshine alike."One of my favorite chapters is "The New Renaissance: Creativity and Social Impact" because it speaks to art, poetry, and creativity used to create a new vision for a better world. "artists, as our mythmakers and image setters, can help point the way forward and inspire a change of heart and mind. This means redirecting the story of art away from the genius of personal achievement and toward community and service. It means being conscious of how our words and actions, like memes, create ripples that impact the world. It means balancing logic with intuition and placing the wisdom of yin on an equal level with the action-oriented yang perspective."Even the drawings and diagrams between the chapters are full of wisdom and inspiration. If you feel that you aren't creative or struggle with self-doubt, procrastination, or perfectionism, or wonder why it's important to use your creativity, you'll love and benefit from this book. There were so many passages that I wanted to underline or highlight that I purchased a second copy so I could lend out the "clean" copy. The size and feel of the book also make it a pleasure to hold and read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Insightful
"The Art of You" is a refreshing and insightful guidebook that gently nudges you back to your creative core. James McCrae's words flow like a soothing stream, reminding us that creativity isn't a rare gift bestowed upon a chosen few, but a wellspring that resides within us all.McCrae's approach is both practical and empowering. He provides a wealth of exercises and prompts designed to help you reconnect with your creative spirit, regardless of your perceived skill level or past experiences. His writing is infused with warmth and encouragement, making you feel like you have a supportive friend cheering you on every step of the way. What sets this book apart is its focus on self-discovery and personal expression. McCrae emphasizes that creativity is not just about producing something beautiful or impressive; it's about embracing the unique voice within and sharing it with the world. Through his gentle guidance, you'll learn to quiet your inner critic, tap into your intuition, and unlock the joy of creating simply for the sake of creating.Whether you're an artist seeking inspiration, a writer battling writer's block, or simply someone looking to add more color and vibrancy to your life, "The Art of You" is an essential companion on your creative journey. It's a reminder that your creativity is a gift to be cherished and shared, and that the process of self-expression is its own reward.

Ideas prácticas y sabiduría poética

Su libro es un regalo, un viaje transformador hacia el autodescubrimiento y el crecimiento personal. Resuena profundamente en temas como la creatividad, la atención plena y la experiencia humana. Es un excelente libro!
Brings inspiration & positive influence in my days
I have been following James on instagram for years, and i love his content. Buying his book was in my wishlist for a while now. I'm not finished reading it, i'm barely getting started, but i'm already inspired by it. Up to now, i'm not learning anything new, but I don't believe a good book needs to teach you something, especially not when we are talking about something so innate as creativity, but it needs to speak to the truth already within. This is what this book is doing, it's reaching my soul to offer re-alignment and remembrance. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of the natural as we live in a world that sometimes feels so unnatural, so untuned. It's also nice to get to know more about James backstory and how he worked through his own challenges in creativity. I had no idea that was his life not so long ago, seeing him on social media gives me the impression he's always been so present with his creativity, but he had his hardships and disconnections too. Kinda gives me hope for my own future. So happy i bought this book, i read a few pages a day and they positively influence my day & consciousness. Also love the aesthetics of the book, i'm not a big reader and get distracted easily, so the colors and variants keep me focused.
I love it!
The art of you is a beautiful guidebook to help you with your creative journey, it will help propel you towards the authentic expression of your unique spirit. I love that there’s practical tools included and I can’t wait to get stuck into them more. We are all born creators and artists and this book is an important reminder of this ♥️
Extremely impactful and one of the best books I’ve read
I bought this book last year and I can hands down say it’s one that’s had a huge impact on my life. Like many I had pushed my artistic passions to the side in order to peruse what others and ultimately society deemed as successful. In the end this did not work for me and whilst going through a period of self discovery I came across James on instagram and then went on to purchase this book. If you relate to anything I’ve just wrote in terms of pushing your dreams to the side and or are hoping to rekindle your artistic passions then do not hesitate to purchase this book. I am eternally grateful to the author for writing this and for sharing his insights on social media. 1000% grab this book as you will not be disappointed ❤️
Exactly what I needed
This book is so refreshing to me. I'm very familiar with the philosophical approaches in this book but have never thought about the things James points to in here. I love his analogies that picturize concepts and processes of the creative journey. Each chapter ends with a meme or short poem which summarize what has been learnt. The balance between words and images is good, same as the division of this book in yin and yang; creative being and creative doing. I'm not 100% finished yet but I already feel a thread leading me smoothly through the chapters, making the title of a "guidebook" well chosen in my opinion.
