Advance Praise for Inevitable:
"This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the massive shift that is upending the auto industry as we've known it. It reads like a thriller, and it should—the stakes involved for the world automotive industry could not be higher." — Mike Murphy, political strategist; founder and CEO, EV Politics Project
"Inevitable is a comprehensive account of the greatest upheaval in the transportation industry since the invention of the internal combustion engine. One of the best automotive journalists in the world, Colias delivers an unvarnished retelling of the EV revolution, warts and all. Essential reading for everyone interested in the future of the car industry." — Sean McLain, reporter, Wall Street Journal; coauthor, Boundless: The Rise, Fall, and Escape of Carlos Ghosn
"Electric cars with supercomputer brains and Chinese supply chains have launched a global industrial arms race US automakers and workers might not win. Mike Colias's colorful, deeply reported book takes you inside the war rooms, from Detroit to Shanghai." — Joe White, coauthor, Comeback: The Fall and Rise of the American Automobile Industry
"Inevitable is an enlightening and entertaining depiction of the most important transformation of the auto industry since cars replaced horses. Colias makes a convincing argument that EVs are here to stay, making it important to understand their evolution." — Gregory Zuckerman, special writer, Wall Street Journal
About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars A Riveting Read about the EV Revolution
Thoroughly researched and artfully told, this book is the definitive tale of the EV mania that has gripped auto industry. Colias does an amazing job bringing this story to life with colorful characters, rich back-stories and in-the-room details. A fast and fascinating read, for sure!! Highly recommend!
5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting Revelation of the EV Revolution
Mike Colias’ “Inevitable” delivers an insightful, well-researched exploration of the chaotic shift from gas-powered cars to EVs. Blending sharp analysis with real-world case studies from major automakers, Colias unpacks the technological, economic, and political hurdles shaping the industry’s future. The book highlights themes of innovation, resistance to change, and the power struggles between legacy automakers, startups, and policymakers. Colias maintains a balanced perspective—neither glorifying nor dismissing the EV revolution—but instead emphasizing its uncertainty and complexity. His journalistic style is clear and engaging, making technical and business concepts accessible without oversimplification. I particularly enjoyed his vivid portrayals of industry executives and technology innovators, drawn from firsthand interviews, which add a human dimension to the narrative. While the book focuses heavily on U.S. automakers, with less attention on global competitors like China’s BYD, it offers a broad, contemporary take on the business and policy challenges of electrification. A compelling read for anyone interested in the future of transportation, business strategy, or sustainability. I’d love to see a sequel in 10–15 years, tracking how these industry battles, technological advancements, and policy shifts ultimately played out—who thrived, who faded, and whether the transition truly proved inevitable.
5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Electric Vehicles - Fun and Authoritative
I’ve read several books on electric vehicles, and Inevitable ranks among the best. It’s certainly the most current, offering a clear-eyed, up-to-date account of a rapidly evolving industry. Mike Colias, an experienced journalist with The Wall Street Journal, brings sharp reporting skills and a gift for storytelling to this ambitious survey. The result is a fast-paced, highly readable book—at times, it even feels like a page-turner.This is not a deep historical account of EVs, but rather a sweeping overview of the challenges facing automakers and car buyers as the industry undergoes a fundamental transformation. The central premise is clear: the decision to go electric has already been made, but implementing it has proven far more difficult than expected.Colias brings the story to life by focusing on the individuals behind the transition. He offers insightful profiles of key players, including Jim Farley (Ford), Mary Barra (GM), and RJ Scaringe (Rivian), grounding complex technical and economic issues in human terms. While the book covers the full landscape of EVs in the U.S., Tesla’s influence looms large. As Colias writes: “This book is not about Tesla. But it wouldn’t exist without Tesla. Whether in name or not, Tesla’s influence is on every page. The extent to which Musk forced traditional automakers down the electric path cannot be overstated.”The book excels at explaining a wide range of industry issues in accessible terms. Why are car dealerships struggling with the EV transition? Why is public charging infrastructure lagging so far behind? What’s involved in building a battery factory from scratch—or sourcing the raw materials to fill it? Why is automotive software so difficult to get right, and why is it now mission-critical for every automaker? If the book has a limitation, it’s in its scope. The rise of Chinese EV manufacturers, arguably the most dynamic force in the global market today, receives scant attention. Similarly, the subject of autonomous driving—closely intertwined with the future of EVs—is touched on only briefly.Still, these omissions don’t detract from the book’s overall value. Inevitable is an essential read for anyone interested in the radical transformation now reshaping the auto industry.Rating: ★★★★★ — Highly recommended.

I’m not a car guy, but I really enjoyed this book. Super relevant to our times, and the author does an amazing job of bringing the reader along for the ride (no pun intended). Highly recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars The future has arrived.
The superiority of electric vehicles is made clear by Mike Colias. Mike works not from afar but next to the beating heart of legacy automotive manufacturers in Michigan. He has seen the short-sighted decisions repeat themselves, kicking the next generation of engineering down a dead end road. The inEVitable is staring auto executives smack in the face now that Tesla and the Chinese automakers are innovating so rapidly and successfully that they risk being relegated to the dust bins of history. Let’s just hope Mike’s assessments will gain traction in the boardrooms of Detroit and around the world. Even though legacy auto said it couldn’t be done, the technology has been proven, supply chains are rapidly being created and prices for EVs is reaching parity with ICE. Total cost of ownership actually favors EVs currently and no hybrids are not the answer.
5.0 out of 5 stars fun, educational read
this could have been a dry business book, but instead it is a narrative, character-driven account of the EV transition's early days. It's quick and accessible even for the the reader with just a passing interest in the car industry. It's current but also offers a succinct history lesson for how the auto industry arrived at this moment.
