5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for new grads and anyone who is early in their career journey.

e. · October 2, 2025

Consider this essential reading for new graduates navigating the professional world of work, and all the things you wish you knew when starting your own career. Also ideal for anyone who is early in their career, confronting workplace issues that might be new and a bit confounding. Gorick's writing is clear, easy to understand, and provides common sense suggestions for the issues most people will face in the workplace. I can't recommend this book enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent graduation present

A.P. · August 31, 2025

It is 5 stars "easy" for who graduates from college/university and wants a roadmap to succeed in business. The author provides a myriad of tips and tricks in a simple and well-understood way on how to make your potential flourish while working with others. The "rules" are timeless and -to my view- very unlikely to become obsolete in the future. The emphasis on "soft-skills" is praiseworthy. The "catch" here -as with all self-help books- is that you have to implement what you read...

5.0 out of 5 stars A phenomenal book - I recommended it to my junior colleagues all the time

S.L. · June 16, 2025

I ventured from academia to industry, transitioning from a psychologist to software engineer. This book helps me better understand the "outside world." I came to realize that the tech stack is only the tip of the learning iceberg. You need to learn the unspoken rules.Soft skills-- the often neglected, but critically important. When people are blocked, it's usually because they lack the soft skills (how to ask for help/build relationships) rather than lack of technical skills.Example:- How to build rapport- How to earn trust- How to ask questions- How to participate in a meeting- How to show potential- How to gain visibilityThis book answers them all! And I enthusiastically recommend the book to all the junior software engineers.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish this book had been around when I was starting my career!

A.C. · April 27, 2021

I was given an advance review copy of this book and I could not put it down. All throughout, I found myself nodding in agreement as it brought me back to lessons I had learned the hard way during my time as a junior officer in the Coast Guard, staffer on Capitol Hill, a law student, a lawyer, and a management consultant. This book hits on so many important and hard-to-intuit rules in such a short space that I cannot think of a more effective way to prepare young adults who are entering the workforce for the first time.I found three elements of The Unspoken Rules very compelling. First, the rules themselves – there have been multiple times in my career where I have looked back at some selection process or tough experience and wished that someone had explained the expectations upfront. Like the author, I didn’t know that people spent their summers studying for the SATs, or their first year of law school trying to get a clerkship that would not start for another three years, or their evenings practicing what they were going to say in the next day’s team meeting. I eventually figured these things out, but a book like this could have saved me a lot of grief (and helped friends and colleagues who never did figure it out¬).Second, I like the checklist approach to applying the rules. Have a meeting with your boss tomorrow? Here’s what you do… The paths the author highlights seem so simple once they are illuminated, and that illumination has the potential to save readers from wasting their time wandering aimlessly in the dark in the hopes that they happen to end up in the right place.Third, the focus on effective communications throughout is something that is so important, but so often neglected in the advice given to people starting out in their careers. The author does a great job in both explaining how others perceive certain types of communication and explaining how to communicate in a way that will convey the proper message and inspire confidence. In focusing on these three areas and doing so in a way that targets young adults who are just entering the workforce, the author has hit on both a winning combination and a unique angle on how to prepare people for their careers. Whereas most training, books, and formal resources use the coded language of the rules, this book is the first I have read that presents the nitty gritty explanations and advice that most of us only receive when someone takes pity on us and pulls us aside to explain “how things really work around here.”Anyone about to start their career, or a new chapter in their career, would benefit from reading this book. I will be pushing my organization to gift it to all new hires, and I would recommend it to college students who are starting to think about their search for a summer internship, to military cadets and junior officers headed to their first units, and to anyone hoping to work in any of the professional services (consulting, law, accounting, banking, etc.).

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READ for those starting careers or pivoting!!

J.P. · June 17, 2024

This book by Gorick Ng provides incredible context on how unspoken workplace norms shape your trajectory, especially in early roles. The author delivers a systematic breakdown of the drivers of career success. After making a compelling argument that 90% of your success comes down to insights that are deeply not-obvious, Gorick does a fantastic job of giving you a playbook for what matters. The key things to know: you need to understand what matters to your manager and focus there first, while also giving yourself the credibility and track record to get noticed across the organization. Careers in corporate can either be a ladder or a byzantine maze. Gorick gives you the practical tools (including scripts you can use in meetings and emails) to transform that maze into a ladder. I've bought multiple copies for younger family members - this book has the insights I wish I started my career with!

C.K. · September 28, 2022

I have struggled with several unspoken rules of the market. I only started negotiating my salary after 3 years working. I only found out that you will not be promoted out of pure merit after 4 years, etc. This book not only could have saved me tons of time and regret for my early career, but was also super helpful nowadays in a 6year long career (which is not super long). It was extra useful because I learned some new concepts, but also because it structured my thinking about several topics that before were "nameless".Genius work.
