Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities

Description:

Transportation planners, engineers, and policymakers in the US face the monumental task of righting the wrongs of their predecessors while charting the course for the next generation. This task requires empathy while pushing against forces in the industry that are resistant to change. How do you change a system that was never designed to be equitable? How do you change a system that continues to divide communities and cede to the automobile?

In
Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities, transportation expert Veronica O. Davis shines a light on the inequitable and often destructive practice of transportation planning and engineering. She calls for new thinking and more diverse leadership to create transportation networks that connect people to jobs, education, opportunities, and to each other.

Inclusive Transportation is a vision for change and a new era of transportation planning. Davis explains why centering people in transportation decisions requires a great shift in how transportation planners and engineers are trained, how they communicate, the kind of data they collect, and how they work as professional teams. She examines what “equity” means for a transportation project, which is central to changing how we approach and solve problems to create something safer, better, and more useful for all people.

Davis aims to disrupt the status quo of the transportation industry. She urges transportation professionals to reflect on past injustices and elevate current practice to do the hard work that results in more than an idea and a catchphrase.

Inclusive Transportation is a call to action and a practical approach to reconnecting and shaping communities based on principles of justice and equity.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“With decades of experience as an engineer and planner, Davis understands the transportation industry. Proficient in both the technical and public engagement aspects of the planning process, she shares valuable lessons learned, poses questions for consideration within projects and plans, and provides recommendations for making systemic changes to the industry….As a call to action, this book would benefit decision-makers and planning and engineering practitioners who are frustrated with and interested in addressing the harms caused by the status quo of the transportation planning process.” ― Journal of Urban Affairs

“At a time when we are defining how vision-led transport planning will be implemented in a UK context, this book offers a compelling argument to define restorative transport planning…. Davis’ manifesto is intended both as a challenge to professionals working in the sector and a call to action for a wider community planning audience.”

"Casually written, this is an enthusiastic and idealistic introduction to the participatory politics of planning meant to elevate consciousness and encourage action." ―

"In the US, our transportation system is at the root of some of our biggest inequities. Ever wonder why some neighborhoods get all the pollution, have the most dangerous, high-speed streets, and the longest travel times to job centers and daily needs?  Veronica O. Davis breaks it down for you and shares her transportation project battle scars. Read this book if you’re a current or aspiring practitioner who works in any field that touches on public investment decisions, AND if you are a neighborhood advocate – you’ll learn where and how to push for change." -- Harriet Tregoning, former Planning Director of Washington DC and Director of the New Urban Mobility alliance (NUMO)

"This book joins the chorus of the many Black professionals who have been asking their peers to engage in new ways of thinking, listening, and governing. Most important, it does so by offering concrete advice that planners and allied professionals can take to assess their own privilege, interrogate power, and actively shift those dynamics in their work.  I hope those leaders, as well as scholars, students, and anyone interested in justice, read this manifesto for repairing divided communities. I feel changed by reading Veronica’s book. I hope you feel the same. Open the book, get started on, or continue, your justice journey, and when you finish, make a commitment to do more than just talk about equity." -- tamika l. butler, esq., Principal + Founder of tamika l. butler Consulting

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a fine wine with a delicious dinner that is healthy for you and our shared planet

Davis has invited you to an incredible feast with this book. The short book is linguistically easy to read and she keeps professional jargon is minimal. She uses few initialisms or acronyms so as to make this meal moist and chewable without having to look at footnotes, endnotes, webpages etc... The content, however, rom this self-proclaimed "transportation nerd" might be a bit unsetting to those who are comfortable with the status quo. If you wish for a car-centric culture that continues to grow, continues to harm our natural environment, reduces or restricts our freedom to choose how to move, sets aside the large percentage of people who cannot legally drive, and continues to result in road violence that kills about a half million people in the US every decade plus provides life-altering injuries and disabilities for about ten times as many people, this book might not be the one you order but it may be the one you need to read. If you wish to see our shared built transportation environment in a new light provided by a dynamic, intelligent, professional who is passionate about making a better world for the children of tomorrow both by her work and her choices in her life, this might be the delicious book for which you are looking. Warning-it is so good, it will leave you hungry for more. While I wish Davis was more inclusive with her framing of "inclusiveness" to include more about the transportation profession's failures in planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities that were accessible to everyone regardless of disability or temporary ability status and how universal designs can exceed the ADA's minimal floor of mere access, I have hope that as Davis grows, her future work will be more inclusive of people with disabilities. Our future is safer, more accessible, and brighter in the hands of master chefs who prepare works for us to consume like this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very timely read!

This book was boldly and clearly written. It gave me so much to think about as a planning practitioner and helped me re-examine "my why". It opened up my eyes to other perspectives I was not aware of before. I highly recommend this book to students and practitioners in any field of study, but especially in the world of transportation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent handbook for advocates, as well as planners and engineers.

R.R. · February 6, 2024

This book addresses a multitude of issues which environmental advocacy works to address. These include the dominance of increasingly large single occupancy vehicles. (The author repeatedly states that her intention is not a “war on cars”, as apparently some of opponents claim.) (By cars, I mean cars, trucks, and SUVs.) This dominance leads to excessive air pollution, traffic congestion, dangerous road conditions, and the wrongful focus on moving cars instead of moving people.Much of our transportation infrastructure is therefore dominated by roads disregarding the needs of people, many of them poor, who walk, use small personal mobility devices (bicycles, scooters, etc.), or use transit. Thus, transit is underfunded, and roads are unsafe especially for vulnerable travelers. The author is in the unusual position of being a black woman in fields long dominated by white men. She admits that even with that, she is neither disabled nor a part of other oppressed groups. I was touched as the author related how she as a child constructed towns with Lionel trains, stores, houses, and people. As I was reading, it became clear that the intended audience for the book are public transportation planners and civil engineers and their consultants. Yet, it is an excellent handbook for advocates of alternative transportation.
