"His guidebooks are approachable, silly, and even subtly provocative in their insistence that Americans show respect for the people and places they are visiting and not the other way around."―
The New Yorker

"Travel, to Steves, is not some frivolous luxury—it is an engine for improving humankind, for connecting people and removing their prejudices, for knocking distant cultures together to make unlikely sparks of joy and insight. Given that millions of people have encountered the work of Steves over the last 40 years, on TV or online or in his guidebooks, and that they have carried those lessons to untold other millions of people, it is fair to say that his life’s work has had a real effect on the collective life of our planet."―
The New York Times Magazine

"[Rick Steves] laces his guides with short and vivid histories and a scholar's appreciation for Renaissance art yet knows the best place to start an early tapas crawl in Madrid if you have kids. About the Author

Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about 100 days a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. A New York Times-bestselling author, Rick produces a guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and he organizes small-group tours that take over 30,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of more than 100 well-traveled staff members at Rick Steves’ Europe in Edmonds, WA (near Seattle). When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic and social justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. What’s the ideal vacation for a professional traveler? For Rick, it’s to play his piano, relax at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spend time with family and friends at home in Edmonds. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and helpful guide

C.C. · August 3, 2025

Every time my family and I plan to visit any country in Europe, I order Rick Steves’ guide books. I really enjoy them because they are sooo helpful as well as the app that accompanies them. I really recommend getting these guides that have all the information, tips, maps, places to stay, eat, things to know before traveling to each of the countries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for our trip to Central Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly the same as Eastern Europe Book

M. · November 7, 2024

This is a great guide book, but if you have the Eastern Europe book- it is exactly the same. The Eastern Europe was published in June 2019, and this one was published in January 2024, so it does have a few updates, but not enough for me to keep it. I love Rick Steves guidebooks- they are the best and most detailed, so if you want an updated version or don’t have the Eastern Europe one- you should really get this. However, if you have the Eastern Europe and don’t need/want the most updated, don’t bother with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meet the new Central Europe...

H.W. · January 8, 2024

For decades after the Second World War, Europe was divided into East and West by the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union, which forcibly imposed Communism on the states east of the inter-German border. With the end of the Soviet Union, Central Europe has reappeared in all its variety. Rick Steves has the details for the enterprising traveler in this huge travel guide. The many countries of Central Europe have centuries of historical sites and natural beauty on offer. There are castles, palaces, museums and a variety of other points of interest, which help describe the unique cultures of each of these countries. Locations descriptive of the rule by Nazi German and the Soviet Union can be found in many of these countries, including the concentration camps used to decimate the Jewish population of Europe during the Second World War.As may be expected, Rick Steves has done his homework. The reader will find lots of useful information for planning trips. As with any Rick Steves guide, the reader is strongly encouraged to read all the relevant material before committing to a trip. The text includes a variety of color and black and white photographs, and maps.At over eleven hundred pages, this guide offers a huge amount of material. It is hard to imagine that any visit could reasonably cover more than a small fraction of the available attractions. The enterprising traveler may be better served by guides (including by Rick Steves) to individual Central European countries. The author's new tendency to make asides about American politics is a questionable one in what is otherwise an extremely professional publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide and information.

S. · April 1, 2024

Again this guide like several others of RS I’ve used did not disappoint. Excels in providing specifics for navigating specific towns and countries , shopping I clouding for food and guides to important “don’t miss” sites and experiences covering wide variety of interests so can pick and choose. Also housing transportation food and shopping guide. I won’t leave home without the RS guide for the area.
