About the Author

Author Leonard Fox has worked several career positions throughout his life. He was once employed in the food industry as a cook and then a sauté chef. Mr. Fox worked construction on a utility crew laying pipe, and also as a heavy equipment operator on an excavation crew, running backhoes and bulldozers. Leonard also worked as a rough carpenter framing houses. He eventually found work at a factory, working for Tyson Foods in their maintenance department maintaining batteries and the function of forklifts at one of their largest warehouses in the country. The work experience of Mr. Fox is wide and yet limited to what he could see in front of him. How could he go to school for a chemical technician if he never knew it existed? When the author found himself in need of money and tired of doing the same thing, he asked himself, "What else can I do without having a four-year degree?". Leonard tried to make a list of fifty careers and when he couldn't, he wondered how many other people couldn't name fifty careers? Feeling like there had to be more out there, Leonard started looking. After hours and hours and weeks of research, he discovered there was more than he could have ever imagined. From the hundreds of options, Leonard Fox selected 50 unique in-demand careers shedding light on the little known.

With so many changes in the work world and the ever increasing cost of higher education this book really comes at the right time! Mr. Leonard himself has had several different jobs in different areas of work. He has really done his research for this helpful primer.Mr. Leonard has thoroughly researched each career presented in this book. Each career is given it’s own chapter. The author has carefully broken the information down into subsections to provide the reader great details regarding each job. He first describes the job in great detail and then breaks down everything a person could possibly want to know about any aspect of this job. He details exactly what a person may do with this profession. Describes in detail any training or education a person would need to obtain a job in given profession. Lays out in detail where a person may find a job in this field, potentials for career outlook and salaries.I think any young person could benefit from this book as the author really gives good information about each profession. Some of the jobs require a 2 year degree or certification, some require apprenticeships. There is a wide variety of jobs presented. The book is also helpful to the “ more mature” crowd like myself as jobs in my field just aren’t what they used to be.

50 Careers Without a 4 Year Degree: Why This Book and Not the Internet is a good read. The title really caught my attention. When we can find any information we want on the internet, why purchase a book, and spend the time working through the pages? I had this thought as well, but this is definitely worth reading. I personally have a bachelor's degree but have often regretted the amount of student debt I walked away with. I like to have alternative advice for my daughter, nieces and nephews. I want them all to have a successful future but I also don’t want them paying for an education that they may or may not use for the rest of their lives. I have told all of them to at least go to college and complete their prerequisite courses but after that, decide if continuing education is the right direction for them. If you can have a sold career with half the cost, I would want to know what those options are.Leonard Fox is an excellent writer with some very valuable information. I don’t have anything against education but as we have seen currently, many have a lot of regrets. This book offers apprenticeship options, two year college degrees or certificate based careers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these alternative options. Many of our social services experts only hold an associates or bachelor's degree. Multiple certificate holders are making an excellent income. Fox has researched and compiled useful information regarding careers ranging from radiology technician, glaziers, electricians, welders, plumbers, to paralegal assistant and physical therapist assistants. These are all excellent careers with steady growth. This book should be available to all high school students before they make this decision. I highly recommend for the young just starting out to those wanting a change.
