The Green Berets: The Amazing Story of the U.S. Army's Elite Special Forces Unit

Description:

This is it. The bestselling book that became the sensational John Wayne move. This is the story of the war in Vietnam, written as a novel but based on the true stories of some of America’s bravest heroes. “One of the most exciting war books.” —London Sunday Telegraph

In Vietnam Robin Moore became on the of the first true “embedded” journalists, training and fighting alongside America’s most elite fighters. Though fictionalized,
The Green Berets exposed the American public to the horrors of the ground war in Vietnam, and gave the men of the Green Berets the recognition they deserved.

Here is the tale of the courageous South Vietnamese girl posing as an anti-American Communist to capture the Viet Cong officer who murdered her family. Here is the graft and double-dealing of South Vietnamese officers undercutting America’s war effort. More importantly, here are America’s soldiers showing unimaginable bravery in the face of a determined and deadly enemy.

With a foreword by Major General Thomas R. Csrnko reflecting on the history and future of this elite fighting unit,
The Green Berets stands as an enduring classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING BOOK

K. · October 15, 2025

This book was extraordinary! I thoroughly appreciated every story, though I wished for more depth exploring Captain Jesse DePortas and his team's narrative. Mr. Moore's AFTERWARDS resonated deeply with me as an Army Brat.Growing up in a military family, I understand the profound impact service has on families. Children of service members, especially those living on base, experience unique challenges that can influence their parents' careers. My father returned from two Vietnam War tours fundamentally changed. Despite the transformation, he remained immensely proud of his fellow soldiers, speaking of them with unparalleled respect. His most cherished mementos were the intricately carved teakwood elephants, fisherman, and Buddhas gifted by the Montagnards. The military provided opportunities my siblings and I might never have experienced in a traditional civilian setting. We traveled extensively, gaining perspectives most people only dream about. When a friend recently asked if I wanted to explore Europe, I realized I'd already been fortunate enough to do so. Now, Australia remains my final travel aspiration.I am profoundly grateful to my father and the United States Army for these experiences. Mr. Moore deserves recognition for bringing these courageous stories to life. While the Cold War may have technically ended, global tensions suggest the conflict is far from truly concluded.I eagerly anticipate more of Mr. Moore's compelling narratives.PS. There are multiple organizations for those who served but there are some for children of service members one being Brats Without Borders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!

Great stuff!! Possibly the best writing on Vietnam that I've ever read. I can see why this book is still selling fifty years later. This was the period from 1962 to 1965, before the U.S. committed large numbers of its own troops. We were using Special Forces/Green Berets in an advisory capacity. Great stuff! The Vietnamese were so unreliable and liable to run during a fight that the Green Berets routinely called them LLDBs (Lousy Little Dirty Bugouts). The Montagnards (a French word applied to about 3 dozen mountain tribes of various languages and ethnicities) by contrast, were reliable allies and good fighters. A lot of fascinating stories are included, the best of which are where Green Berets are working with Montagnards. Some stories that were cut from the original book have been added back in this version, so it's a little too long for my preference. But not so long that I would deduct a star.Robin Moore was already in his late 30s when he qualified as a paratrooper and took the Special Forces training so that he could hang with these guys as a writer. He passed away a few years ago, but this book will last forever as a thinly fictionalized chronicle of the Special Forces "advisers" in the early years of the U.S. war in Vietnam.

A fictional narrative: "... [F]ar from glorifying the [Vietnam] war, this book graphically emphasized what was wrong with it, and what was right with the men of the Special Forces.... (p. xii) I decided I could present the truth better and more accurately in the form of fiction.... (p. 1) 'The Green Berets' tells the story of Special Forces fighting the Vietnam War in Indo-China from 1964 to 1972" (p. 14).To effectively portray the Green Berets, the author was compelled to attend jump school, guerrilla training, and, graduate from the Special Warfare School. Each chapter is devoted to a different aspect of the Vietnam War from the perspective of the Green Berets. As one soldier ruefully expressed: "We're fighting a war of deception against an enemy who can and will out-deceive us on their home territory..." (p. 277). Riveting. For another outstanding military novel, please see, Anton Myrer's "Once An Eagle."

3.0 out of 5 stars The book deserves a thoughtful reading.

Hmm...this is a difficult book to review. Its an important book in the story of the Vietnam War. It carried great influence at the time, causing many young men to want to become Green Berets, enhancing the aura of Green Berets, and spawning a famous song and John Wayne movie. Author Robin Moore gained great credibility because he actually completed Green Beret training as a reporter. I believe he's the only civilian ever permitted to do that. Although its technically a work of fiction, Moore plainly indicates that the stories are strongly based on facts and that he actually experienced a lot of the situations in Vietnam in the 1964-65 era.The book is entertaining and an easy read. There's no doubt that Green Berets are exceptional and very resourceful warriors, and quite driven and patriotic soldiers. Much of the book is quite disturbing, however. Moral and ethical questions abound (hell, we're talking about no holes barred war, not every day life). And in modern asymmetric warfare, Special Operations Forces are increasingly important. My difficulty with the book is its undisguised hero-worship. No one should mistake Robin Moore as an objective reporter of events, he's not and I doubt he has ever claimed objectivity. I would have liked a more rounded perspective. Recruiting women into spying/prostitution, sexual exploitation by American troops of native women, and other very disturbing activities at minimum deserve thoughtful discussion, not the wink and nod that Robin Moore gives it. These things were done by American troops meaning they were done in our name.Read the book and decide for yourself.

I bought the 2015 Skyhorse (USA) paperback here on Bolo UK for £9.99, a couple of years back, and I'm glad I did, because it's unavailable now. It has the silhouette of the soldier on the cover. Good luck finding a copy, they're like gold dust. I would love to have a hardback edition, but it would cost about £100! Very highly recommended.

Thumbs Up!

Interesting insight to the operations of the special forces during the Vietnam conflict. Good follow up to the Green Beret.

Politicians start wars but rarely win them!!

C. · June 2, 2015

It is clear from this book that America Troops did not lose the war in Vietnam. They were victims of the politicians bowing to the Vietnam Government which was,one can surmise, riddled with Viet Cong sympathisers. It is clear from this that so long as politicians, many of whom have never been closer to a war zone than the local cinema, continue to make policy with one eye on the next election, the Military are going to be on a hiding to nothing. TV War in the sitting room doesn't help since they only show the sensational. Having served in Malaya, where we wonI have every sympathy for our American cousins. Read this book it is well worth the effort,

It was reading this book when I was about 13 years old that lead me to be standing in a pair of boots at Ft. Bragg 5 years later after I graduated from HS; I did indeed pass Selection (back in the 80's). I'm a middle-aged fart now and bought this book out of a sense of nostalgia. If you have an interest in this sort of thingy, I suggest buying the DVD "2 Weeks in Hell" made by the Discovery Channel about present-day SF Selection.
