Editorial Reviews

Review

"An excellent choice for home mixologists."
Library Journal

"One of the things many people miss when they stop drinking alcohol is the ritual that goes along with popping a cork, pouring a glass of wine, or building a cocktail.
Dry offers many opportunities for an adventurous cook to create new rituals, as well as quick fixes for the impatient teetotaler who just wants a drink ― and wants it now."
The Santa Fe New Mexican

"You’re going to enjoy these recipes all year long."
Atlanta Journal Constitution

"Surprising takes such as the Beetroot Virgin Mary add new life to a familiar favorite while new combinations like the Blood Orange and Sage Margarita make your mouth water in anticipation."
Paste Magazine

"There’s an alcohol-free drinks revolution happening, and
Dry is an intelligent―and accessible―guide. For too long non-drinkers have had to settle for overly sweet and overly simple ‘mocktails.’ There is nothing ‘mock’ about the drinks in this book."
John deBary, bar expert and author

"Drinking together is important―not because of the ‘drinking’ part, but because of the ‘together’ part. Now folks who are avoiding booze can enjoy the party, too!"
Maggie Hoffman, author of The One-Bottle Cocktail: More than 80 Recipes with Fresh Ingredients and a Single Spirit

What I love about it is every drink has a full color photo. I love seeing what the drink will look like and it makes a fun read. The cover is just nice looking with the shimmery letters and looks awesome on the coffee table. I like that the drinks are so varied- some do call for interesting ingredients but if you've recently given up alcohol like I have and you did appreciate exotic cocktails you'll be thrilled to find non-alcoholic versions, with bitters and shrubs ect. There are also simple recipes too, virgin bloody mary's and drinks made with common citrus fruits like lemons and limes. I'm excited to try the warm drinks with apple and cinnamon once fall comes around. I love to entertain and will be using this book a lot. I think the relaxing idea of sitting on a porch and sipping a summery drink can be achieved with these non-alcoholic versions- with only positive results. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and delicious

I love this book. Yes it takes more time to squeeze a blood orange and some limes than it does to pour a glass of wine, but that’s part of the appeal for me—I feel I am preparing something special for myself. And then the taste is special as well. I’ve probably made half the recipes by now, and I’ve enjoyed every one. The syrups are easy to make-ahead and store—a few minutes on a weekend—and the ingredients are in my garden, my regular midwestern grocery store, or good ol’ amazon. Really this is a joy of a book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple and complicated at the same time

J. · July 14, 2022

I was super excited to get this book since I recently quit drinking but I was disappointed. The recipes were really just basic drinks with the alcohol removed or replaced with a non alcoholic alternative, which I could figure out on my own. Also many of the drinks had way too many ingredients so I would have to shop and spend a lot of money for a single drink. With that said, it did give me some options to consider when I want to be fancy.

Great little book. I love the recipes for rosemary syrup and chili syrup. Lots of recipes for different seasons and occasions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Alcohol Alternatives

H. · July 14, 2019

My wife's been looking for alternatives to alcoholic cocktails. She's loving this book, and has made a number of cocktails and simple syrups from it. It fit's well with our DIY mindset. Thanks to Clair Liardet.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book to suck the fun out of drink making

J.L. · March 18, 2021

My general rule for cooking or drink making is less than 6 ingredients, and 4 is ideal. This book exceeds that on virtually every recipe. Impractical.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent But Annoyingly Virtuous

L.A. · November 20, 2021

This little book has a few decent recipes, but oh my god the self-righteousness! Every single drink is "healthy" with "antioxidants" or even worse, "chock full of vitamins." Yuck. The absolute last place I want to encounter the whole food-as-virtue nonsense is in a book about cocktails. Cocktails are all about indulgence, decadence, and food-as-pleasure, and removing the alcohol shouldn't equal removing the fun, or indeed removing the whole point. If you want health smoothies, you'll buy a book about health smoothies, right?Julia Bainbridge's "Good Drinks" is a much better choice.
