3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Keith Laumer story

It was more Of a Mad-Max like story tangentially featuring bolos than most other novels of this series. Did not much care for it, but I stuck it out till the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid, well-done post-apocalyptic read!

Master of the first person viewpoint! Have read this book several times, and it is one of Laumer's best. Great descriptive writing and dialogue. Wish he was still around and writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars It wasn't that bad a story

It wasn't that bad a story, and I thought it was a pretty good exposition on life in a post-apocalyptic world. Some of you dirt eaters just need a little more patience. I am and have been the Lesser Troll on many fora and chats. A few people have caught the reference.

Authors often ruin their short stories by expanding them to novel length, but adding little to the actual story. Sometimes an author does so, but adds a new ending or an expanded ending that improves the story. In this case, the author has added padding to the middle of the book, changing neither the beginning or the end. If you wish to read the better, short story, then purchase The Complete Bolo by Keith Laumer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not his worst

The other (1*) reviews are not wrong, but I liked this book. I have read several of Laumer's books that are worse than this one, notably several of his quantum physics Retief stories. This is not a Bolo story nor is a Retief story. He chose to write a story that I find is out of character for him, so if you only want to read one of his more popular story lines you will be disappointed. The hero does start out not picking up on the obvious, but he just woke from cold sleep and is not at his best. From there he is just a step behind and quixotic all the way through the story. He can be forgiven some of this as he can't have read the script before embarking on each step of his journey. The flaw is that Laumer paints with a broad brush, that's why we love him, robust and uncomplicated memes, but this story requires a finer touch. He tries, but is not quite up to it. The timeline is forced, as is the main character's slow wittedness. One can see in retrospect that he would not have been as quick on the uptake as we well fed and rested readers are. Pretend you are groggy and hungry daily and read the story and accept that events as they transpire as he would understand them, then it makes more sense. It's not as bad as it sounds and you may not have noticed if not forewarned.Spoiler alert. I wil try to bury this in text so you don't accidentally read it, but the ending is tragic. While I like this book, it is not one that I have or will reread often. This is a broad brush ending and Laumer scores his point here. It's just too hard to take.
