The concept was a creative one: time travel used for warfare. It's brought about explosively in the first issue. And keeps the same steady flow throughout the series, but as most reviewers said, it doesn't take the course most fans wanted, which was to see the expansion of this new phase in history. Rather than diving deep into the background info of the setting, he catches us off guard by revealing the issue to be connected with smaller circumstances but equally dangerous results. It takes the "sins of our fathers will be paid with our children," approach to the narrative and in my opinion worked out rather well. I imagine any route Hickman would of took would be interesting, which leaves room for a one-shot maybe about the mythology behind THE RED WING. It comes on disorienting, the kind of roller coaster war would look like. The series is loaded with possibilities, and only becomes more enjoyable when you start rereading it!The real joy is the overall story. It ends on a real nice note, giving to me, full disclosure for the type of conclusion that a cruel dystopic future like this deserves. I think most people wanted to see the return of elements from the first issue. I'll admit I wouldn't have minded seeing it, but I think the overall presentation for sale with just 4 issues makes it a rather affordable package of ample storytelling. In fact, there are many other comics out today (mostly by Marvel and DC) that run for years and rarely accumulate to the amount of storytelling I experienced in the RED WING.

Some reviewers here have criticized The Red Wing for not being longer, but I thought the length was just right when you consider the ideas involved and the execution. I read The Red Wing in one sitting, then reread it immediately after. Many scenes with caption boxes take on a slightly different meaning once you know the "ending" than they did isolated from that context on the first read. The Red Wing is an exercise in economical storytelling. It may be physically short, but it is also dense with ideas and possibilities. Multiple readings will be beneficial or even necessary. To the extent that The Red Wing encourages at least one rereading, it isn't really a short work.The use of time travel in this story is purposefully structured in a way that disorients the reader. Hickman spells it out for you that time is not linear early on in the story. The use of ouroboros (the snake eating its own tail) on the cover is also an early indicator that this will be a non-linear experience.I don't want to reveal much more about the story other than that it involves time travel, and that once you understand the story, it raises a lot of questions not answered by the text about the characters. In my opinion, these are questions best left unanswered. The hints and suggestions made throughout the story are probably more interesting than a bloated story that spells out exactly how (and when) everything happened.Pitarra's art is great throughout The Red Wing. Fans of clean line artists like Frank Quitely, Seth Fisher, Geof Darrow, and Chris Burnham will love Pitarra's art in The Red Wing. And the best part? This is Pitarra's first major work. I look forward to watching him evolve.In short, if you enjoy science-fiction, smart, minimalist storytelling, and works that have repeat reading value, I highly recommend The Red Wing.

A mind bending across decades sci-fi epic about a world where humanity must now fight for survival as time periods collide - and a father desperately fights to save his son from going down a dangerous path. The final page alone will you keep you up late at night trying to figure out its true meaning along with all the detail put into this engrossing if all too brief adventure.

To preface this, I've been a fan of Jonathan Hickman's previous work, specifically "the Nightly News" and "Pax Romana." Despite some exemplary art from Nick Patarra and Rachelle Rosenberg, a promising idea is left to die on the vine by some mediocre storytelling. Another reviewer of this story commented that his primary complaint with Hickman's work is the feeling that essential parts of the story are being left out - this is an excellent example of that critique. One might wonder how this could have played out if the story had been given time to breathe. After all, the concept of fighting a war using time travel with the inherent challenges and dangers of that technology could have been thought provoking as well as exciting. Instead it is merely disappointing.

The book is well-told and great to look at - Nick Pitarra has only gotten better by doing "Manhattan Projects" with Jonathan Hickman - but it's otherwise kind of thin. While Hickman has an interesting premise with his ideas about time travel, he doesn't really flesh out the human story enough to make the rest off it worthwhile. Good try on Hickman's part, but it just wasn't there.

Pretty wild journey through space and time, forwards, backwards, and sideways. I'll reread this again and probably enjoy it more the 2nd time around. The art is simple, but good.

Hickman does it again
When you read a Hickman book, you get a thought provoking experience. Here is no different, time travel, parallel time lines, divergent futures and pasts and a thought provoking experience are all here.It's still 5 stars despite a lack lustre ending but here is hoping a sequel is to come.
Leaves you wanting more
I bought this book because I loved the concept and Love Jonathan Hickmans work.I did have some reservations about it because of the negative comments I saw from other people complaining about it being way too short and I feared it would be an unsatisfactory read.Well, I bought it, I read it, and I loved it!!!!!!Its a great story, a great concept and a VERY good world that the creative can continue to revisit whenever it so pleases them. I like the fact that it ends with a resolution but still feels like there are about 4 more volumes worth of stories in that universe.Thats the only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 because I honestly wish it was at least 100 pages longer.
