Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist, Vol. 1

Description:

  • A classic of science-fiction is reborn in Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist. Inspired by Alex Raymond's legendary tales of invasion, action, and romance on the distant planet Mongo, and under the artistic supervision of renowned artist Alex Ross, Zeitgeist returns Flash Gordon to his two-fisted, thrill-packed roots.
  • The year is 1934, and Earth is attacked by a powerful alien invasion force, led by the sinister, all-seeing Ming the Merciless. And this time, he does not fight alone. Allied with the sinister spymaster Klytus, his exotic and treacherous daughter, Princess Aura... and Adolf Hitler! Three valiant humans ― iconic hero Flash Gordon, the tough, determined Dale Arden, and the brilliant scientist Hans Zarkov ― are plucked from our world and rocketed into another universe of fearsome creatures, noble and savage alien species, ancient science, and titanic threats.

Very well written and drawn. I'm not exactly crazy with the coloring (mostly, the choice of colors used) but, I guess that was the look they were going for. I am very happy with the story( I LOVE Eric Trautmann) and the redesigns of the different races on Mongo. I would also recommend that you read "Merciless" by Scott Beatty and Ron Adrian. It's the origin of Ming the Merciless, and it fills in a lot of the holes of Ming's back story. It's also a good read, with great art.

When I say start to finish, I mean from ordering the book to receiving it and reading it! Book arrived on time and in great condition. It has beautiful artwork and a really solid, great story. Being a fan of Flash since the 70's, I loved the updated storyline and designs. Alex Ross did an amazing job getting this project going. Dynamite has been a little hit and miss with me, but this one is definitely a HIT!

Great mix of old and the movie

3.0 out of 5 stars Great premise that gets abandoned too quickly.

J.F. · August 30, 2014

Most people's knowledge of Flash Gordon is probably limited to the 1980 movie, and if that's true for you, you should enjoy Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist. It follows the same basic plot structure as the 1980 movie. It borrows specific scenes and even bits of dialogue from the 1980 movie as well; it gets to the point that the narration describes the title character as someone who will "save every one of us". In many ways, it's an introduction to the classic Flash Gordon. However, being set in 1934, it takes actual history into account, showing an alliance between Ming the Merciless and Hitler, and, in the series' best single issue, tying Dr. Zarkov's backstory to the Russian Revolution and Stalin. There's even a slick reference to 1980s cartoon Defenders of the Earth. For the most part, Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist is nothing that readers didn't already see in the 1980 movie (or the 1930s serials, for that matter). The only element that feels somewhat fresh is a subplot that follows a team of aliens on Earth combating Ming's invasion, but little is done with the premise. Where the series begins to take off is in the last few issues, picking up where most Flash Gordon stories leave off: the heroes overthrowing Ming and becoming the rulers of Mongo. The final few issues take things in an intriguing direction, showing the difficulties in uniting the feuding kingdoms of the planet and dealing with the idea that Ming, while merciless, perhaps provided a necessary strong hand. Just as things start to get interesting, the series ends, and rather abruptly too. The artwork ranges from quite good to average; there are a few spots where characters are indistinguishable and a handful of battle scenes where the action is incomprehensible, but not many. The Alex Ross covers for the series, and the painted-style art of the series goes a long way to show that nobody can do Alex Ross' style as well as Alex Ross, I guess.

It's what I wanted and more. Brought back memories of the 1980 animated series and movie special on NBC.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun but Rushed

Flash Gordon Zeitgeist is a fun revisiting of the Flash Gordon story that contains visual and story references to just about every version of Flash Gordon to ever come out. As a fan of all things Flash Gordon I enjoyed all of references that appear in this volume, and while the art is terrific the overall story felt rushed and somewhat rote. There were some new elements to the story, but overall it really needed to be a few issues longer to give those new elements time to develop.

You get a solid story, with some excellent art work, but may be one too many competing story strands leads to over-complication. The real gem in this purchase is the last 28 pages which are full of Alex Ross sketches and alternate covers. A must for any Flash Gordon fan.

A very positive surprise from an all times carácter.

Great book and story, with a gorgeous art and a very classic 80's flavour. If you are a Flash Gordon fan don't miss this book!
