Victory after the Fall

Description:

Reverend H. K. Matthews is one of the unsung heroes of the Southern civil rights movement. Among his activism, he participated in the first sit-in demonstrations in northwest Florida and led a campaign against the use of Confederate symbols at an area high school, and much more. And he served time in state prison for a crime that never occurred.

However, his memoir
Victory After the Fall is much more than one man's account of his life experiences. It is a first-person narrative of the challenges and opportunities black citizens encountered before, during, and after the 1960s struggle for racial equality. Matthews reveals what impact the unique community of Snow Hill, Alabama, had upon him as a young boy. He describes the influence other pioneer activists such as Rev. W. C. Dobbins had on his life and tells of the close encounters he had with the Klu Klux Klan in Florida. The book also provides insight into the impact his activities had upon race relations in Pensacola and how his ordeal still impacts the city.

Victory After the Fall provides a fascinating journey into the civil rights battlegrounds of northwest Florida and beyond, but it is also a story of moral courage and personal redemption. Matthews tells how he lost everything as a result of his ceaseless campaign for human dignity and left Pensacola a broken man. But he discovered in Alabama that some things could never be taken from him. This book outlines the rise, fall, and ultimate victory that a remarkable person endured because of his efforts to improve relations between his fellow men.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful Phenomenology That is Riveting!

If we have not personally walked in a man's shoes, the historic brevity of such events can be astounding. As we explore the lives of those who lived during the Civil Rights Movement, let us never forget to pause and reflect on what we are doing in the 21st century to keep Dr. King's dream of racial equality and harmony alive. As a society, we still have a long way to go, but such treasures as Matthews' book serve as constant reminders that during the raging storms, we must persevere. We may not be liked and/or admired by others, but that is not the overarching intent. Walking in love speaks volumes. This book was insightful and rewarding on many levels.

While I don't doubt the author's experience is interesting, if one credits their experience as being interesting enough to publish they should at least verify facts that involve other people in the book. The text had NUMEROUS errors - blatant errors. The author cites many things as fact with regard to the deputies in the primary case referenced. Very little effort on my part was needed to find that these facts were blatantly untrue and used to bolster the author's story and the author's perspective of the case. Examples: the author claims the "ride along" with Deputy Raines was his civilian brother in law. The gentleman was in fact a military police officer and was not at all a family member. (Very much to the contrary, the gentleman was the husband of a woman who would eventually become the deputies' second wife.) Again, very little research was needed to discover this. The "trailer" cited by witnesses and claimed by the author has being registerd to the deputy was in fact never registered to the deputy. No trailer was ever owned or registerd to the deputy. However, a trailer was owned and registered to the deputies father. this is not to speculate that the deputy was any less guilty, however the author's poor attempt and providing facts suggests that he may have made up many other "facts" as well. Do not use for any research purposes.
