Review

“Designed with safety professionals in mind, including health associations, first responder organizations, and state and federal agencies, this volume is an up-to-date resource for those needing information on the technology, management, and compliance issues in occupational safety. It also covers such topics as organizing, directing, staffing, and evaluating occupational safety programs and procedures. This new edition has been updated with the most current regulations and statistics. It includes chapters on safety-related laws and regulations, hazardous materials, workplace violence, and terrorism. Highlights include information on the Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Communication of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS); chapters on industrial hygiene; and updated information on transportation safety. Useful for reference is the chapter providing directory-type information for safety and health associations, first responder organizations, and state and federal agencies.” ―American Reference Books Annual

“This updated edition of an introductory textbook on occupational safety and health (OSH) provides comprehensive coverage of laws and regulations, safety and ergonomics, human factors, terrorism and violence, hazardous materials, and other workplace dangers. Friend and Kohn espouse the philosophy that occupational illnesses and injuries are preventable. The historical survey in chapter 1 is excellent. Particularly strong chapters are ‘Workers’ Compensation and Recordkeeping’ and ‘Ergonomics and Safety Management.’ The latter is detailed and reflects the authors' backgrounds and expertise. Chapter 9, ‘System Safety,’ is sufficiently detailed to be useful in program development, including setting up and conducting a job safety analysis and basic skills for an OSH practitioner. Discussions of legal and economic issues are interspersed throughout. Overall, the book is strongest in safety topics, with excellent coverage of accident response and investigation. . . .This is a workable textbook for a one-semester course. Summing Up: Recommended. All students, faculty, and professionals/practitioners.” ―
