Description:
Eating is an indispensable human activity. As a result, whether we realize it or not, the drive to obtain food has been a major catalyst across all of history, from prehistoric times to the present. Epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said it best: "Gastronomy governs the whole life of man." In fact, civilization itself began in the quest for food. Humanity's transition to agriculture was not only the greatest social revolution in history, but it directly produced the structures and institutions we call "civilization." In 36 fascinating lectures, award-winning Professor Albala puts this extraordinary subject on the table, taking you on an enthralling journey into the human relationship to food. With this innovative course, you'll travel the world discovering fascinating food lore and culture of all regions and eras - as an eye-opening lesson in history as well as a unique window on what we eat today

We found the two episodes we watched to be well researched, clearly presented, and historically accurate. After watching the two episodes on-line, we've gone ahead and purchased the entire series in DVD format so he can continue to use it in his teaching. It's presented like a university lecture and not in the format of a History Channel documentary so it is more academic and less flashy than you might initially expect. We are very excited we discovered this - it suits his interests in history and my interests as a foodie!
1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong quotes matched with stories
In his Classical Greek lecture "Wine, Olive Oil, and Trade," Prof. Albala began talking about the Dionysus cult that existed before Christianity. They'd tear apart a bull and eat the flesh and drink the blood, and he said, "Here's a quote, 'He who will not eat of my body and drink of my blood will not be made one with me, or I with him, and he shall not know salvation.' This verse probably sounds family to many Christians..." At first I was excited and began to research the "ancient" roots of this quote for a deeper understanding -- what time period; did this have a connection with the Old Testament; etc. Unlike other quotes, he did not give a source. Well, it turns out the quote had nothing to do with the cult of Dionysus. It was a Mithras quote. That was a rival cult to Christianity. Cannot trust anything this so-called "historian" has to say. Maybe a student did his research. Turns out Prof. Albala was a guest on an atheist podcast, so he has an agenda against Christianity. Why does religion have to seep in? Wish he would have just stuck to his topic of Greek food. Lousy lecturer despite the interesting topic of the series. Very disappointed.

This book was purchased for an instructor. He absolutely loves the book.
1.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not History... wrong references...
Mr. Albala is a byproduct of story books not historical studies that is why his references are all imaginary tails of religious books instead of facts. On another note, he puts a great deal of effort in avoiding the name Iran and Iranian Culture and Cuisine and replaces these with Sumerian, Babylonian, Pagan, Islamic, etc. What do you think your next listen will be?Definitely not anything from Mr. Albala!Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Professor Ken Albala? It didn't matter if it would be anyone else. The content were useless and of no value. You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities? The only redeeming quality was to never try another book/course from Albala.Any additional comments?Hope to see better and more accurate books and courses about culinary art and history on Bolo. One last note... I do not recommend wasting any minute on this course.
