The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year Volume 1

Description:

For the first time ever, award-winning editor Jonathan Strahan has assembled the best science fiction and the best fantasy stories of the year in one volume. More than just two books for the price of one, this book brings together over 200,000 words of the best genre fiction anywhere. Strahan's critical eye and keen editorial instincts have served him well for earlier best of the year round-ups in the Best Short Novels, Science Fiction: Best of and Fantasy: Best of series, and this is his most impressive effort yet.

In print and on-line, science fiction and fantasy is thriving as never before. A multitude of astonishingly creative and gifted writers are boldly exploring the mythic past, the paranormal present, and the promises and perils of myriad alternate worlds and futures. There are almost too many new and intriguing stories published every year for any reader to be able to experience them all. So how to make sure you haven’t missed any future classics?

Award-winning editor and anthologist Jonathan Strahan has surveyed the expanding universes of modern sf and fantasy to find the brightest stars in today’s dazzling literary firmament. From the latest masterworks by the acknowledged titans of the field to fresh visions from exciting new talents, this outstanding collection is a comprehensive showcase for the current state of the art in both science fiction and fantasy. Anyone who wants to know where the future of imaginative short fiction is going, and treat themselves to dozens of unforgettable stories, will find this year’s edition of Best Science Fiction and Fantasy to be just what they’re looking for!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This is an excellent sampling of some of the most interesting contemporary voices in sf and fantasy, including Neil Gaiman, Cory Doctorow, Kelly Link, and Paul Di Filippo, tackling a pleasingly wide range of subject matter. Jeffrey Ford's "Night Whiskey" concerns the strange customs of a small town and the terrible things that sometimes come out of the unknown. Christopher Rowe's "Another Word for Map Is Faith" concerns a future in which the faithful of Christendom traverse the earth, "correcting" geography to conform to the errors on maps. The volume closer, Ian McDonald's "Djinn's Wife," is a lovely fairy tale of the future about a dancer who marries an AI; as the narrator observes, even if it doesn't have a happy ending like a Bollywood movie, it has a happy enough ending. Editor Strahan has selected a lot of winning stories here, well worth revisiting, often more than once. Regina Schroeder

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader

K.C. · September 7, 2007

A new series of books, or so we hope. I read this fully expecting not to like the fantasy part as much as the SF part, and that certainly turned out to be the case. What I have basically classified as SF to myself averages around 3.80, the fantasy part, 3.60.Anyway, I have always looked at these sort of things as Best SF with bonus material. In fact, fantasy is broadly defined here, from with boys, to child slaughtering horror. The breakdown of genre is SF a bit under half - and the odd nebulous story that you could call SF would take it a bit over half, for those that are mostly interested in this as a science fiction book. For the rest, perhaps 60:40 fantasy to horror, by my classification, for those interested in that sort of thing one way or the other. The editor gives a brief introduction, which is an historical overview of various 'Year's Best' series, and his own favorite editors of the past. Not sure whether it is short of choice, or for space reasons as he was trying to pack in as much story as possible. If that is the case, then perhaps publishers in a similar situation could consider longer editorial introduction with perhaps a url in the book, or even that as an excerpt or promo. The story intros are brief, with a little bit of biography, and a little bit of introduction, and keeps to the right side of the line of reading like advertising. Speaking of which, this book actually has relevant advertisements for other books by the publisher. Normally, most people don't like advertising, but in the case of books, I find it good to have what else is available, with publisher's URL prominently available. Even if you just do the old fashioned one page list like was done in the past, that is fine. However, in this case you exactly get pretty high quality cover reproduction and blurbs, so quite well done. So, to rate this, I give the SF part a 4.5, and the fantasy part a 4. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good stories; one HUGE drawback

j.m. · April 10, 2015

There are some good stories here, but be forewarned: The digital version has NO clickable contents/index. This is the sole aspect that kept me from giving this volume five stars. It is so annoying and frustrating not to be able to be able to jump to a particular story. Not all of us want to read an anthology in front-to-back order. Ironic that a volume of speculative fiction apparently wants us to read in a lock-step manner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price, but not great either. A rocky start to the series.

What the hell happened to this series? I can remember when "The Best Science Fiction of the Year" anthology was THE most anticipated book of the year for myself and a lot of other SF fans. I haven't picked up an edition in maybe a decade, but I was hoping it was still filled with great stories, exciting characters and action packed story-telling. Not even close. Just about every story in this volume is "artsy-fartsy" social commentary BS that delivers more preaching per page than Billy Graham's biography!Still, I somehow slogged through this miasmic literary compost heap, hoping against hope that there would be at least ONE story within its covers that didn't bore me to tears. And truthfully, I believe there was one. The rest? Snoozeville, 2016.I mean, I'm an educated, bleeding heart liberal, but even I was beginning to feel pummeled by the unending "education" being shoved down my throat by this collection. Gays? Yes, great. Women? Super duper, more power to 'em! Minorities? Welcome to my country, move in next door, I'm cool with it. But for the love of all that's holy, please, please Mr. Editor, give us at least one or two stories that are actually interesting and entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year is a welcome addition.
