The beginning of the book was a bit long-winded for me. A little too much descriptions that I'm not a fan of, but others may enjoy. Once the story got going (about 20% in - I read it on a Kindle), it really kept my attention and I enjoyed it a lot. Very emotional.
5.0 out of 5 stars When Crickets Cry
One of the most powerful stories of love, friendship and the ability to truly see. This book will stay with me for a long time and has me ready to “see” again. Well done, Mr. Martin, well done!
4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read with a little patience for the drama!
Definitely a page turner, beautiful setting, complex characters and plenty of redemption for everyone!A good wholesome book that tells the story of people dealing with terrible loss and trying life circumstances. It might help answer why bad things happen to good people for some.Gods hand and his grace are well intertwined with our main characters! My only grievance was the back story of Reese. He may have been described by Trump describing himself! He was the best at everything! The world’s best heart surgeon, rowing champion, best boat refurbisher, best carpenter, best McGiver! Caries a flashlight, medical kit, survival knife, all on his belt? Really? But besides the fact this perfect person could never exist it was a great read!I recommend it with an open mind that is…
5.0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor and read When Crickets Cry!
This is the first book I have read by Charles Martin but it won't be the last. You have to be very focused to read in order to take in all the rich detail he gives, His characters become your friends and family. This story will stay with me a long time and will be read again.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!
This was my first time reading anything by this author and all I can say is what talent! This is a heart wrenching story, but it is so eloquently written with the MC quoting scripture and great works of literature with fluid grace. The storyline was tough, but it does have a HEA in case you’re wondering. It’s a story about heart transplants (and is very detailed) and a surgeon in hiding who has to come full circle in his journey through love and loss to give life again. I was breathless in awe throughout the book! What a gifted author!
5.0 out of 5 stars A heart beat away
That's what life is, a heart beat from death. The secret is to live life between those beats and Annie knew and did just that. This story to me is about second lives given through organ donation and transplant. This is something near & dear to me. My 17 year old granddaughter become a donor just 16 months after putting that red heart on her drivers license. She lived life to the fullest and had a heart for the broken Hearted, hope foe those who had none, and wanted her organs to live on past her heart stopping. They couldn't take her heart it was to damaged, but her great grandma needed a human heart valve and they were able to save hers. My mom had passed on before she could get one but someone's grandma did thanks to my granddaughter. The greatest most selfless gift you can give is to donate, I hope you never have to make that decision, yet talk to your family and know the importance of this act and give lovingly.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I love Charles Martin's writing, a lot. This book and its characters made me feel so many emotions. It was recommended by a friend and yes, I will recommended it to all my Facebook friends. Thank you Charles for a great book.
4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging story
I enjoyed the story line and characters, which reflected complexity and connection. I didn’t find it believable that the main character would be able to jump right into surgery after 5 years of hiding, or that other professionals would let him. The ending was unexpected. Overall an engaging story.

Well written and keeps you guessing what is going to happen. Excellent read.
Amazing story by an amazingly good author.
This is a wonderful book which I can heartily recommend to you. I also recommend this author who I love so much that I pay full cover price for his books as soon as they are published.
A story about moral obligations and responsibility.
If you like good literature then this book is for you. Charles Martin has the ability to use the written word to describe a person's inner feelings and fears. The main character has suffered a traumatic experience and has retreated and rejected his former life and friends. His emotional climb back to his former self is beautifully described. We begin to understand his dilemma and his inner demons. His writing reminds me of the style of James Lee Burke. Whereas the latter describes crimes and their consequences, the former describes personal failures and how they affect, not only your own, but other people who are close to you.
Heart felt story!
A beautifully written book and heartfelt story. The characters are engaging and the theme is interwoven so well. My only criticism is The medical descriptions were even a bit too much for me with some knowledge. But overall, recommended.
Amazing story!
I loved how multilayered the whole story was, touching many deep emotions…. A wonderful read!
