Learn Robotics with Raspberry Pi: Build and Code Your Own Moving, Sensing, Thinking Robots

Description:

In Learn Robotics with Raspberry Pi, you'll learn how to build and code your own robot projects with just the Raspberry Pi microcomputer and a few easy-to-get components - no prior experience necessary!

Learn Robotics with Raspberry Pi will take you from inexperienced maker to robot builder. You'll start off building a two-wheeled robot powered by a Raspberry Pi minicomputer and then program it using Python, the world's most popular programming language. Gradually, you'll improve your robot by adding increasingly advanced functionality until it can follow lines, avoid obstacles, and even recognize objects of a certain size and color using computer vision.

Learn how to:
- Control your robot remotely using only a Wii remote
- Teach your robot to use sensors to avoid obstacles
- Program your robot to follow a line autonomously
- Customize your robot with LEDs and speakers to make it light up and play sounds
- See what your robot sees with a Pi Camera

As you work through the book, you'll learn fundamental electronics skills like how to wire up parts, use resistors and regulators, and determine how much power your robot needs. By the end, you'll have learned the basics of coding in Python and know enough about working with hardware like LEDs, motors, and sensors to expand your creations beyond simple robots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! My 10 year old son loves this book.

A.U.1. · January 5, 2024

I started teaching my son Scratch programming by first grade. Then I gave him Mbot, by Makeblock, to continue his learning of programming fundamentals with Scratch.By fifth grade, my son started to plateau with learning Scratch, so I thought I would see how he did with learning Python. I first gave him a $4 Raspberry Pi Pico and the free online book by Raspberry Pi which teaches the basics of MicroPython using a Pico. (This could have been done completely free if I had known about the free online Pico simulator by Wokwi). He liked learning MicroPython, so I gave him this book with all the parts that were needed to complete the work in this book. He is loving this book. My son is learning how to build a robot and how to write the code to make it move. This book is well written and easy to understand that a fifth grader can complete the work with very little help from their parent. Occasionally he needs help troubleshooting his code, which is usually a simple problem of a missing letter or capitalization. Something that any parent can catch by comparing the child's work with the book.If you have a younger child that is growing bored with Scratch programming or an older child that is interested in robotics, then I highly recommend this book.Thank you for writing such a helpful book!List of components that are needed for this book.Raspberry Pi 3 or newerPower supply https://www.Bolo.com/gp/product/B0CBPJH1VKElectronics starter kit for Raspberry Pi https://www.Bolo.com/gp/product/B09ZXNL2WHRobot chassis kit https://www.Bolo.com/gp/product/B01LXY7CM3Battery box https://www.Bolo.com/gp/product/B0833L85J9LM2596 DC-DC voltage converter https://www.Bolo.com/gp/product/B09LCNVB22TCRT5000 Infrared Reflective Sensor https://www.Bolo.com/gp/product/B08YRCR6MLUsed Wiimote from eBay.

This is a great book for Pi users. Lot of pictures to the not so hard to follow instructions. I can not say enough good things about this book and this is a must get for robot builders/Raspberry Pi users. This book although not as think as my robot builder's bonanza book. But more to the point on the basics of robotics my only hopes for this book is that the writer ..Writes a part 2 guide on AI applications in other words please write a second part 2 to this book :) P.S I am only have way through this book because I am still waiting for online parts to come in the mail so I am not sure if it goes into that topic. Not paid to give this review just have the time to give it as I am waiting on parts. my advice into robotics physical computing? GET THIS BOOK.

Great book. I had built a robot with another book before but this one has interesting information about to make things more simple with Python for beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Outdated, but Great for Learning!

L. · August 5, 2025

New to Raspberry Pi, and so excited to get into this book. Although I have not built anything yet, I have read most of the manual and it is full of diverse, fun ideas to start your Raspberry Pi/Python adventure. To buy everything, you’re looking at a good $300, especially with the camera. However, you don’t have to do all of the projects at once. The reason I haven’t made it further into the project is because the software package I need to download, NOOBS, is apparently no longer used. I’m going to have to do a little research on how to get past that. Other than that, 100% suggest!

5.0 out of 5 stars 9 year old boy loves it

H. · October 24, 2020

Nine year old loves it. We took it out of the library and he loved it so much he asked to buy a copy with his own allowance money. To put this in reference, this is the second thing he’s ever asked to purchase in his whole life with his allowance money, the first being ice skates. He is into coding and robotics and engineering in general, already knows Scratch, Python, and is working on JavaScript. He does have a raspberry pi, and some other materials, so he will be able to do projects with this very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for building a Raspberry Pi robot

This book walks you through the build of the Raspberian OS and the build of a physical robot. The step by step instructions were invaluable and made the build very easy and allowed me to complete simple progressive steps along the way. I am now going the next step my modifying some of the basics and making my robot to use 4 wheels !Excellent book !

Takes you through the background science and step by step explanations of the code. We have been having a blast building our robot using this book. Everything worked for us until we got to the last chapter using the camera. Even when using the author's code you get errors. Looks like he needs to update the code in that last chapter. numpy and cv2 aren't working correctly anymore. HELP!

A well-illustrated and comprehensive book.

C.S. · January 17, 2019

In this detailed and well-paced book, Matt explains how to get started with the Raspberry Pi right from unboxing and powering up the computer for the first time through to building your own autonomous robot. There are lights, sounds and sensors along the way, and the book ends with line following and basic image recognition. A younger, or more impatient, reader might wonder why so much preparation is needed before we can connect up the parts and get coding. But, the comprehensive nature of this book means that a user should, on their own, be able to get started without frustrating searching around on the internet for tips and fixes. With sections on basic operating systems, simple circuits and coding from scratch this is an ambitious book. The illustrations are clear, colourful and well presented, and look very easy to follow. I've spent a very pleasant afternoon reading the second half of the book. Now I need to find my box of bits....

Love it, this is just what my 13 yr old son and I needed to get us going. There are online sites that cover similar material but we found it useful to have a printed book. I especially like the way the models are built up with Lego bases - we have a huge Lego collection and we've had a lot of fun extending the models in the book with our own ideas.
