National Museum of African American History and Culture: A Souvenir Book

Description:

This souvenir book showcases some of the most influential and important treasures of the National Museum of African American History and Culture's collections. These include a hymn book owned by Harriet Tubman; ankle shackles used to restrain enslaved people on ships during the Middle Passage; a dress that Rosa Parks was making shortly before she was arrested; a vintage, open-cockpit Tuskegee Airmen trainer plane; Muhammad Ali's headgear; an 1835 Bill of Sale enslaving a young girl named Polly; and Chuck Berry's Cadillac. These objects tell us the full story of African American history, of triumphs and tragedies and highs and lows. This book, like the museum it represents, uses artifacts of African American history and culture as a lens into what it means to be an American.

This is a great book and I highly recommend it. It’s well made and the colors are deep and add to the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about a great museum

Great momento from the NAAHCM! The gift shop there was a little pricey, so it was nice to be able to order this as a momento from my son’s 8th grade trip there. Wonderful museum, can’t wait to go back and spend more time there. The book captures the key parts of the museum, but if you can go in person too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A historically and culturally rich overview.

An excellent overview of the museum as well as a preview for one’s visit to the museum.I have bought several so that I can give them to family and friends who are about to visit. It prepares them for a historically and culturally rich experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars A small 7x7 souvenir book that briefly highlights the museum

J. · July 20, 2017

We just came back from a trip to the NMAAH&C, and only had a few minutes to spend in the museum gift store. I ordered this souvenir book on Bolo when we returned. The souvenir book measures 7" x 7" and is a brief 64-page overview of some of the highlights at the museum. There's less than a page of text to describe any one collection, and the text is more or less comprised of captions to photos of artifacts. The book is a good souvenir that costs the same as a magnet I bought. I'm going to keep it, as well as order the Official Guide to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (also on Bolo). The Official Guide is more comprehensive, organized into chapters, and contains more artifacts & text in 160-pages.As far as the museum, itself - it's an absolute must-visit. The exhibits & galleries are compelling, thorough, and provide a varied, rich history that add to the complexities of the national fabric.

I am handicap and hope one day that I will be able to go to DC to see this treasure of a true culture of pain and suffering. I purchase this keepsake book to view what I am unable to see at this time. I love this book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow,heavy!

I bought this because my gym didn't supply one,and i needed it for my late pulldowns.I was surprised at the quality of it and the substantial weight.I think it is quite the bargain for less than $15.00,a great purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Small

I. · December 27, 2018

I bought this with the intention of giving it as a gift. but it was awfully small and thin, only 1/4 inch and barely 7x7. The information is very brief, just enough, and the images are good, but it is small with small text. It should be at least 10x10. I feel cheated.
