If you’re looking for an inspiring read, seeking purpose, or have questions about your past and calling, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, practical and insightful

L.f.a. · October 15, 2010

The author found many ways to say almost the same thing, but it a good way to make the point so that you can't miss it. I felt like I was on an adventure into my own life and tied together what God has been doing and where He is taking me. This book does as much as any other I have ever read that answers the question about God's purpose in allowing suffering in our lives and the actual benefits we receive when we recognize it and respond positively to it. It has helped me make sense of my life and helped me to become much more positive and excited as to what God has done, is doing and discovering what He is going to do to use my story to help others and to bring glory to Him. This truly is or can be a life-changing book depending on our cooperating with God in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-Changing

I am a Christian, and have served in full-time ministry for years. Ministry is joyful, but can also be heartbreaking. I have many stories of heartbreak. I have pushed these hard stories aside in my mind, not fully embracing what God had intended for me through them. This book was eye-opening and life-changing. I wrote some of these stories from my life and shared them with my husband--some of these were things I had never told anyone, or even let myself think of after they happened (including being molested during an overseas trip as a college stident). God spoke to me so clearly through this exercise, showing me things I had never seen in my in story. I can see what God was doing in my life, and how He wants to use them now. This book was amazing. I am not 100% sure I theologically agree with all the details of this book, but it's a wonderful book nonetheless.

you're interested in developing your faith, you would like to put your life story in a broader, more complete context and you would like to develop a healthier perspective on some of the more difficult experiences that you've gone through. I would recommend this book to many of my patients who need to broaden their spiritual and experiential perspective and I would recommend a book to many of the parents that I work with who have a very difficult time dealing with the spiritual development of their children.Spirituality is a developmental process. Many of us attempt to get by with a very limited infantile spirituality, which is no surprise, because we learned it when we were very young. When it no longer serves us we simply close the door on further spiritual growth, and, most importantly refuse to ever open it again. It is sort of like trying to get through a calculus class with the math that you learned in sixth-grade.Dr. Allender's attempt to get us to look at our history in the context of being co-authors with God and being part of the revelation process is a huge step in opening the door and moving on towards a more age-appropriate relationship with God. The author is extremely talented. He has a real knack for identifying and processing the dynamics of traumatic experiences and how they relate to God. It can be a difficult read, but that is because it challenges us in a very meaningful way. I look forward to reading more of Dr. Allender's work.Obviously, the book is written within a Christian framework. However, anyone who has an interest in incorporating a realistic, commonsensical, notion of God into their lives would benefit from this book.My only nitpick is that at times I found it repetitive but that's purely subjective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep, honest, and freeing!!

L. · March 30, 2019

Transformative work that dares us to delve into each of the darkest places in our lives to explore how we are part of God’s amazing and beautiful story of redemption. There’s so much depth to it that I can’t express it all in a brief comment, but this book has given me the permission to be real and honest to name things exactly for what they are. Yet, it challenges me to find the daring and awesome purpose God has for my life through the power of my tumultuous story interwoven with the stories of others which ultimately reveals His Love and Care for each of us. Thank you so much, Dr. Allender, for your openness and humble wisdom!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tell me a story...

K.C. · February 11, 2009

This book is extremely useful if you are at the point of analyzing your life's story. I am involved in an extremely intimate group of fellow believers and we had already taken the time to tell our individual stories to each other. It was exhausting and scary and made us extremely vulnerable to each other. And now, we are working through this book and discovering how our stories have affected us and how we can grow beyond them. So far, so good. I'm excited to see what God will do now that we have exposed the truth about ourselves. We already know that we will have to retell our stories after we have finished this book, but it doesn't seem so scary anymore. It is freeing to pinpoint the things that hold us back and the things that make us soar. It's also extremely important to see God's penmanship all over our lives. And it's wonderful to share the journey with dear, safe friends.

This book is inspiring and the author writes in a beautiful way. I was going through a dark time while reading this book, and I found that reading couple pages a day and doing the writing prompts lifted my mood. I highlighted a lot of areas I liked and I like to go back to them for inspiration. Great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well written but not what I was looking for.

C.g. · March 8, 2014

Good reading and well written but a little complicated to get everything into line. Written by a therapist, there seems to be the assumption that everyone has a dark hidden past that has messed them up. I was looking for something we could do on a women's retreat. This was not the book for that. Instead we will use Richard L. Morgan's "Remembering Your Story"

TO BE TOLD: KNOW YOUR STORY, SHAPE YOUR FUTURE

A.C. · August 16, 2016

I loved the book, because it is uplifting, making us realize that everything we live and go through is valuable and can bring significance and encouragement to others. Not only our gifts and talents have to be invested in others, but also our own stories.God has written our story so that we would see Him in it and share Him, make Him known. Once we have looked at our story and found its main theme, we can write our mission statement, because God allows each of us to co-author our story and bring it to its accomplishment.
