The Way of a Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues His Way (Shambhala Classics)

Description:

A special edition of The Way of a Pilgrim and its sequel, two spiritual classics that demonstrate the profound power of the Jesus prayer

This classic of world spiritual literature is the firsthand account of a pilgrim's journey as he endeavors to live out Saint Paul's instruction to “pray without ceasing.” The narrator, an unnamed nineteenth-century peasant, sets out on his pilgrimage with nothing but a Bible, a rosary, and some dried bread. As he walks, he recites the Jesus prayer (“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”)—a prayer that is said to quiet anxiety and fill the heart with love for all creation. With this prayer constantly on his lips, the pilgrim undergoes a profound spiritual education.

This edition includes the sequel to
The Way of a Pilgrim, entitled A Pilgrim Continues His Way, which contains a lengthy appendix reviewing the teachings of the Holy Fathers on the Jesus prayer.

Amazon.com Review

The Way of a Pilgrim is a spiritual classic, but its origins are shrouded in mystery. It came to a remote monastery in Greece in the 19th century and was first published in 1884. Whether it is literal, fictitious, metaphorical, or pedagogical is unknown. The story follows an itinerant spiritual wanderer, all the time practicing Saint Paul's exhortation to "pray without ceasing." Specifically, the pilgrim repeats one prayer unceasingly, the Jesus prayer, until it becomes a sort of mantra. Through repetition of the prayer and encounters with his fellow inhabitants of 19th-century Russia and Siberia, the wanderer finds a spiritual enlightenment.

The Way of a Pilgrim is an oddity, but it can also be strikingly profound. In its sequel, A Pilgrim Continues His Way, the pilgrim engages an even richer dramatis personae in dialogues and spiritual lessons. Olga Savin's crisp, straightforward translation preserves the distinctive timelessness that makes the book great spiritual literature. This edition also includes three appendices that elaborate on the narrative's themes and a helpful glossary. --Eric de Place

5.0 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Jewel

This is a wonderfully readable translation (1991), by Olga Savin, of a true spiritual classic. It's a book meant to be read again & again, in conjunction with the Philokalia ("Love of the Good/Beautiful"): a collection of mystical/ascetical writings (originally in Russian & Greek, available in English) by the the Fathers of the Eastern Church. The most noted &, in the minds of the Fathers, essential feature is the "Jesus Prayer", repeated over & over. Called by the Fathers "the art", even "the art of arts", St. John Chrysostom simply summarizes it thus: "Whether eating or drinking, sitting or officiating in church, traveling or doing anything else, one must cry unceasingly, "Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me!…Continue to invoke unceasingly the Name of the Lord Jesus, so that your heart embraces the Lord within itself and the Lord embraces your heart, and the two become one." The process involves what could be called a fairly "standard" structure, with some personal variations allowed: solitude/quiet, watchfulness of the mind over thoughts, drawing the mind down into the heart, prayer, especially the Jesus Prayer, "until", as Nicephorus the Solitary notes, "this invocation becomes one with the beating of your heart and flows unceasingly. This is what all the Holy Fathers taught."

4.0 out of 5 stars The path to God is through prayer....

A.c. · January 29, 2013

This is a good book on growth in the spiritual life. It takes place in Russia so the pilgrim is Orthodox, but one could switch it to Catholicism just as easily. The only thing I have against it is that the inside back cover (or the front?) promotes New Age literature (publisher's fault) and the pilgrim (if I remember right) tries to convert a Polish Catholic. Rome and the Orthodox are sisters. Can't we work to heal the Great Schism? The narrative is captivating though and teaches important truths. It's the interior (and not the exterior) of a person that matters most. Jesus in the Gospels would agree.

Simple, beautiful & authentic. A rare insight into the Eastern Orthodox Christian approach to God. Quite possibly the final enclave of Christianity which infuses the traditional Orthodox framework with a deeply mystical and compassionate perspective.
