Usury: Frequently Asked Questions

Description:

Understanding usury requires an understanding of how the nature of some contracts differs, fundamentally and categorically, from the nature of others. Usury is not a matter of the same kind of contract differing only by ‘excessive interest’. Usurious contracts constitute a kind of contract which is intrinsically immoral by its very nature. This book is intended to help people understand what usury is – and is not – and answer many of the questions which naturally arise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book by an Anonymous Blogger

Great book. You can't read it and fail to realize exactly what the Sin of Usury is. Once you understand Aquinas, you will instantly be able to recognize any given situation and understand the applicability of the teaching. Way more light than heat. Also recommend Something for Nothing by David Hunt for an analysis that incorporates this superb book into a larger analysis of how we got here historically. Both books are must reads. I really wish the author did not seek anonymity, however. That's my only annoyance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dot-com investor goes "back to the future"

This brilliant book should be required reading for every MBA program and real-world investor. Whether you agree with the author Zippy's theology or not, economically it's a fascinating "back to the future" exercise that stretches eight hundred years. What makes it ring true is that Zippy happened on this insight by being a dot-com investor, founder of multiple companies, and later a knowledgeable spectator of the 2008 financial disaster. In the Prefaces, and especially Question 28, he links the disaster to what he calls "faux wealth" and traces it right back to usury, as defined in crystal clear fashion by St. Thomas Aquinas in De Malo (Question 52 - the entire book is in FAQ format - with original Latin "Ad decimumquintum dicendum" on page 104). And this is just one of several bright rays of light that the book shines on our screeching, dysfunctional economic world, always from an unexpected direction, and always countercultural. The physical book is a masterpiece; the cover looks and even feels good. (Full disclosure: the Typesetter, listed as a co-author, is my son, who discovered Zippy and his blog and later informed me about his book.) The book doesn't answer all questions: for instance (Question 54) if savings naturally decay according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, how have average people been building retirement plans with positive real rates of return for hundreds of years? And one would really like to know more about Zippy and his experience. But as a thought-provoking excursion into an alien land of mental clarity, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book for reading and reference.

Excellent resource for the Catholic who is unclear about Church teaching regarding usury. I read it entirely online and I just now found out it's in physical copy. A necessity for the library of any orthodox Catholic.
