2022 KIRKUS STAR AWARD; BEST NEW BOOK
"An encouraging, upbeat, and useful call to host parties and make friends. This debut guide offers a new strategy for meeting people and networking. There's a touchingly earnest element to the way the author leaves nothing to chance. He devotes energetic attention to everything from handling RSVPs to managing the right mix of attendees and preparing the space for an influx of guests. He provides innumerable helpful hints and "party pro tips" for prospective hosts, everything from posting little map directions on the stairs
to a wide array of possible icebreakers designed to get people talking and having fun. Anyone who has ever attended a networking event (or a dinner party) will fervently hope that Gray's idea takes root and becomes universal.
—Kirkus Reviews

BOOKLIFE REVIEWS BY PUBLISHERS WEEKLY; EDITOR'S PICK
Gray's tone is conversational and light, suiting the subject, and this is an inviting and polished manual for adults looking to expand their network, make new friends, or simply plan a winning get-together. Gray explains the power of positive icebreakers, how to cut off a long-winded guest, and even how to avoid the awkward period when guests first arrive. Interviews with successful party hosts demonstrate the possibilities of his techniques, even in small homes and apartments, and charming illustrations break up the manual and keep the tone light. Readers will come away with an in-depth plan to host a soirée and grow a guest list—and also reason to expect it will actually be fun. Gray's conversational tone makes a relaxing read out of a potentially stressful situation, demystifying each step of party planning and breaking the process down into three key parts, "The Basics," "The Logistics," and "Party Time."

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and Practical Formula for Connecting with People.. Fun too!

s. · April 19, 2023

I heard about this book when the author was featured on the podcast The Art of Manliness. I love connecting socially with people, but the pandemic threw a wrench in that for me. I'm now excited to connect with friends and acquaintances again but want to do so in a fun, natural, and authentic way. This book provides the perfect formula for that!I love how Nick Gray the author provides a real step by step guide on how to throw a great cocktail party, and his process is extremely well thought-out and refined. At my last party (before this book) I was stressed out about serving drinks, choosing the right snacks that people would enjoy, and worried about people having a good time. It wasn't that much fun for me, to be honest. But Nick's book shares excellent advice about how to set things up so that everyone has a good time and you as a host can enjoy the experience. This is a gamechanger! After reading the book, I've been in touch with Nick and his assistant Ash via email and they both have been very responsive and helpful. The scripts that Nick shares in the book are so convenient (and tested) which makes my life so much easier. Another thing I appreciate is that Nick really encourages hosts to do things like have name tags and facilitate icebreakers, which on the surface may seem uncomfortable to the person wanting to be the "cool, laid back host" but ultimately create a much better environment that people enjoy! Nick shares his reasoning for why these work in the book, and he is right.I didn't know I needed this book until I found it, but I'm so glad that I did. Thanks for writing this book, Nick!

5.0 out of 5 stars A party playbook by someone literally best known for hosting really good ones.

P.K. · June 14, 2022

Nick has developed, designed, and field tested an effective party format and formula that literally anyone can do (he’s tested that part!), in any city or town, with any type of group and it manages to bring out the best in host and guest alike.Trust in people. Put good ones together. Give them name tags and something to talk about and never let anyone get too settled or boring or backed into a corner. Those people will tell their friends and you’ll grow your network along with your guest list.I know, because I’ve done it, I’ve seen others do it, and you can do it too. This isn’t a dull memoir with tips - it’s literally checklists, illustrations, case studies, actionable templates, ready-made scripts, and a step by step How To guide. It’s a party playbook. By someone literally known for hosting really good ones. Nick is a great guy who likes meeting people and wants to pay that forward in this book. I can’t say I’ve read anything like it before.Invest in reading it, then doing it. You’ll see rewards in less than a month, both tangible and intangible. It’s like if Covey’s Highly Effective People got in a room with Gary V’s energy and the science and thought in The Art of Gathering. That is to say, as unique a book as its author.Only Nick could write this book, so that people who thought cocktail parties were boring and company mixers sucked and that they knew how to host amazing parties already - all could learn something new and different and their crowds would benefit from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Book with a very engaged author!!!!

J.S. · January 18, 2024

This was a fun read and motivated me to throw a great cocktail party. I followed all the tips and extra resources the book had to offer. Also, the author Nick Gray graciously gives his phone and email in the book if you have additional questions! I tried my luck here and I was so surprised that I got genuine responses and follow-ups from him and his assistant Ash Smith! They were so engaged with me and my event. It was a great experience. I got a lot of feedback from my friends that everyone felt included even though they didn't know anyone! I know for me icebreakers can be a bit scary, but I am 100% sold that they do the job to bring people together! oh, and name tags were a win too!!!! I also really appreciated the guidance on what kind of cocktails to serve, and I had the perfect selection! 10 out of 10- Erin Schagunn Smith

4.0 out of 5 stars Name Tags - Good information on Socializing and Planning

M.A.R. · January 21, 2024

Hosting client events, and parties for over 30 years, I still got some useful information from Nick's book about hosting a 2-Hour Cocktail Party. Name Tags Work... I have never used them, and thought, most of my guests came every year and knew each other...Not, so much at remembering names, my friends! So I found a name tag with a built-in Icr Braker for the holidays - Naughty or Nice Nametags were the right fit. Now I need a harmonica - I just wasn't there yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read for anyone and everyone

a. · May 12, 2025

This is a great book for both seasoned hosts and someone who has never hosted anything before. I have held many gatherings and hosted many parties and I learned a number of strategies to make my events better. The process laid out is both simple and easy to follow. A fast read and worthwhile for anyone, as the more people you know the easier it will be to build new friendships and pursue new endeavors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked great for me

f. · December 1, 2022

I really liked this book and feel I benefitted from it (pic on of my cocktail parties is included). I'm someone who has historically prioritized my career over friendships and after several recent moves, I was displaced from my previous longtime friend group. So I decided to prioritize making great friends in my new city and this book has helped me do that. It's a quick read and gives you a step-by-step blueprint for how to host events to build a quality social network. The author has an upbeat and lighthearted tone that makes it all feel fun and achievable while also being highly motivational. I've hosted six enjoyable and well-attended cocktail parties using the book's guidance. Several of my guests have been a little shocked by how smoothly the parties run and by my attention to detail (when I was only following the recommendations).I find myself spontaneously using the same icebreaker format it teaches when I meet groups of people at other events because it works so well to connect with new potential friends. Finally, the author seems to really want to help you succeed and he encourages you email him, so I did. We live in the same city so he even attended one of my parties. 🙂

I'm ready to host my first cocktail party!

A.C. · June 25, 2022

I read this book in one sitting! First, I have to say that after reading the book, I feel a deep admiration for the author; every single page is the reflection of someone who genuinely cares about others. The testimonials throughout the book encourages you to leave your social fears behind and do it! In a couple of months, I'll be moving to a different country and I can't wait to host my cocktail party!

Great how-to guide at learning how to host a party

C. · March 18, 2023

The book gives some great practical step-by-step instructions as to how to host a gathering.

Life Changing Book!!!

A.L. · May 10, 2023

(I used my wife’s prime account to buy this book and it’s the best purchase I’ve made to date!)So I first heard about Nick and his book from the hugely popular business podcast My First Million.Nick is close friends with Sam Parr one of the hosts and founder of the (acquired) Hustle and Hampton.Nick has been coined the Friend Billionaire by an actual billionaire (Andrew Wilkinson, Tinyco) and I can see why.He is easy to relate to, we’re both naturally introverted, dislike the transactional nature of networking, but still want to have loose connections with people who we can be friends with, share common interests with, or who might be the person who connects us to a new business opportunity, partnership or career path. It’s hard for me to have time to make friends, being in my mid-30s, working 12 hour shifts, owning a b2b moving company, and spending time with my 3 year old and amazing wife who also works part-time.The friends I do run into at the gym are just like me! Working during the week and reserving the week-end for the family! Our priorities naturally line up with; Kids, work, wife and then being a hermit the rest of time. It’s not at the risk of us not wanting friendships and relationships- it’s just hard to actually spend time to create/reconnect and have friendships and relationships. After reading this book, I’m taking action and using the momentum Nick’s words have given me to start planning my first 2 hour cock tail party! Looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones!Warning!! This book is well-written, easy to digest, but HARD to put down!!I’ve put a ton of notes, post-it’s and highlighted all the useful tidbits Nick has put together in there. And don’t worry! The master appendix in the back will give you a cheat sheet/good structure in the planning and actual phases of the party.-Derek from Vancouver, Canada.Ps. Check Nick out on Twitter! He has tons of interesting content and responds to DMs!

Pratico e simpatico

A perfect guide to hosting a successful party

K.C. · December 8, 2023

I'd never hosted a cocktail party prior to reading the book. It seemed overwhelming and, to be honest, scary. But I decided to give the book a try. And it turned out to be a total success. Everyone enjoyed it and wanted to be invited to the next one. Since then I have hosted three parties and it has already become a tradition of mine. While reading the book you might question advices that are being given (like using a harmonica or doing ice breakers). They might even look childish. But they work and they work perfectly. So I incourage you to try everything the book says on your first party and then make adjustments if necessary.

This is a great book for both seasoned hosts and someone who has never hosted anything before. I have held many gatherings and hosted many parties and I learned a number of strategies to make my events better. The process laid out is both simple and easy to follow. A fast read and worthwhile for anyone, as the more people you know the easier it will be to build new friendships and pursue new endeavors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked great for me

Life Changing Book!!!
