“The author’s ability to present two different, but related, heartbreaking stories inside her own novel and keep all the voices distinct is so impressive. The fascinating characters and the beauty of the writing pull the reader in…Highly recommended.” ―Historical Novels Review
“Delightful! …very satisfying. Barbara Davis endings usually are!” ―Midwest Book Review
“In The Echo of Old Books, author Davis deftly blends two time frames, the 1940s of the two books, with the 1980s of Ashlyn; two romances (Hemi and Belle's and Ashlyn and the professor's while slowly divulging why one was tragic and why the other two are so wounded by their pasts they can't seem to move on. I admit I sniffed a bit at the end.” ―Midwest Book Review
“I’ve voraciously consumed all of Barbara Davis’s books, but this gem of a dual timeline, which features a protagonist who owns an antique bookshop, has woven its way into my heart. The Echo of Old Books is a shining testament to the redemptive power of love. I took my time reading this story, savoring all the beautiful sentences, because I didn’t want it to end. Highly recommend.” ―Terry Lynn Thomas, USA Today bestselling author of The Silent Woman
“Woven with intriguing historical elements, The Echo of Old Books celebrates an enduring romance that overcomes all obstacles and the transformative power of love to heal the pain of past secrets. A big-hearted gem of a novel sure to delight true book lovers everywhere.” ―Christine Nolfi, bestselling author of A Brighter Flame
“I knew from page one that I would fall in love with this ambitious jewel of a story. Two books within a book. Two love stories within a story. And a bit of the unbelievable as only Davis can weave. All of this done in a manner I’ve not seen before. This book has everything readers want: family drama, deceit, lies, and corruption set against one of the most horrifying periods in history. And love. Davis may have reached a new height in her career.” ―Barbara Conrey, bestselling author of My Secret To Keep
“With her latest novel, Barbara Davis has delivered a beautiful gift to readers who enjoy a true passion for books. I was entranced by The Echo of Old Books from the very first page. A story within a story, it has all the elements I love―unforgettable characters, an old mystery begging to be solved, a well-researched historical backstory that is both romantic and tragic, and a touch of magical realism that swept me into the delightful world of my imagination. I couldn’t have loved it more!” – Julianne MacLean, bestselling author of Beyond the Moonlit Sea
“A new book by Barbara Davis is cause for celebration, and The Echo of Old Books is a carefully woven, brilliant, beautiful, complex story of finding family and rediscovering lost love. Davis's characters are living, breathing people that you miss when you get to the last page. I loved every single page of this historical, lyrical, magical novel." ―Maddie Dawson, bestselling author of Matchmaking for Beginners and Snap Out of It

5.0 out of 5 stars The Echo of Old Books
I gave this books 5 Stars despite having one negative to share, so I'll get that over first. I LOVE the storyline! Even though I don't care for multiple storylines & multiple protagonists, that doesn't stop me from reading such books. I really DO think this group of story lines work well together, however it felt as if it was stretched a bit, as if to make it "fit" something specific. Partly I'm sure this was to fit the different storylines together, which I understand, but it just seemed to me that some things could have been blended more smoothly to make reading more concise, to remove redundancies. Other than that, as I said, it's a great read! The multiple storylines are handled MUCH better than most books of this sort that I've read, especially with the number of storylines!! The characters are well written. There were times I thought, "Hmmm, I must have been mistaken in how I saw this person!", only to quickly see that I WASN'T wrong at all! The "villains " are relatively easy to spot, & the "good guys" easily became my new friends. There is a quote from Ashlyn, at the beginning of Chapter 14, that could have come straight from my heart: "In the happiest times of my life, I have reached for my books. In the saddest times of my life, my books have reached back." This is one of the books which will reach back, sometime in my future! I highly recommend this book to readers of Historical novels, Romance, & even Mysteries, though it isn't a mystery per se.
4.0 out of 5 stars ALMOST perfect
The only reason I'm taking a star off is because I felt Ashlyn's story was rushed and an afterthought. I felt this book had very little to do with her and I was surprised how much time we spent on Belle and Hemi. That said! The author did a masterful job of putting us in each character's shoes! It was brilliantly written! I was on Belle's side, then I was on Hemi's side, then I was on Belle's side again! Each twist was not too predictable but not out of left field. The story hooked me and wouldn't let go. It was also an interesting look at history. I had completely forgotten the pro-Nazi sentiment among some Americans; it was timely with what's going on in our country now.So the story has history and so much angst and tension and romance! But it was also supposed to have this magical realism bent that lent almost nothing to the story. I was only disappointed that we didn't get more of Ashlyn and Ethan. But otherwise, a truly engaging book! Lots to discuss in book club!!
5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique and Captivating Novel
WOW! Kudos to Barbara Davis for the unique and creative premise of “an empath of books” (“Psychometry) in “The Echo of Old Books” Sometimes, I have felt that “certain books” reach out and create unforgettable memories. Can you imagine the special ability to pick up a book and get the authors’ or owners’ feelings and emotions involved in creating and reading? I love everything about this book. Two timelines do connect. The genres for this book are fiction, mystery, women’s fiction, and romance, with a touch of magical realism. Barbara Davis is a fantastic storyteller and writer and vividly describes the characters, setting, events, and plot. The author sketches her dramatic and colorful characters as complex and complicated. There are betrayals, secrets, and saboteurs. The story’s female protagonist, Ashlyn Greer, has the remarkable ability to feel the emotions of the previous owners; Ashlyn has had a difficult life and often seems like a closed book in her personal life, but in her professional life, she restores books and gives them new “life.” When several strange books are given to Ashlyn, she reacts strongly to the characters. The books have a mystery that has Ashlyn determined to discover more about the characters. There are twists and turns, surprises, and unexpected events. I highly recommend this mesmerizing and captivating book to others.
5.0 out of 5 stars On the mend
I was enticed by the allure of a character that could sense the lingering emotions of a book’s prior owner. As someone who was raised on books and has half their arm covered in tattoos of characters or quotes that cling to the fabric of my being, I hope that I’ve left a mark on my books too. However, I found such a bigger, beautiful story. A story of love gained and lost, legacies made and crumbled. A mixture of The Great Gatsby with Romeo and Juliet. I loved the presentation of the separate story arcs, especially in the form of two mysterious and author-less books that read like a written correspondence between spurned pseudonyms lending a thrill of mystery to this romance. I didn’t know how much I needed a book like this until I finished it. After wiping away the cathartic tears of joy, satisfaction…and something I can’t even quite describe, I can say I feel lighter as a person. It’s left me feeling like the Grinch whose emotional heart space has grown three times its size without even knowing it had been malnourished and atrophied. Like finding something I wasn’t sure but was afraid I’d lost; the spark of the hopeful romantic previously smothered without my full knowledge or consent. I enjoyed the rollercoaster of never quite knowing who to be frustrated with or cheer for as everyone felt so obnoxiously human at times (translation: relatable in their imperfections). I had moments of empathy when they felt betrayed or slighted, wholeness, or head over heels in love but afraid to admit it (to themselves or each other). However, they were each so human in their ability to simultaneously be both their own and each other’s worst enemies. Being conflicted yet bound by conviction born of a very human sense of stubborn pride/ignorance. A delightful read for someone who isn’t looking for an explicit or graphic novel but an intimate expression of the highs and lows of a rich romance of the heart. (Edited for grammar)

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story
Enjoyable book with many twists and turns. Characters are realistic and I really enjoyed the story and how it ended.
Appeals to lovers of old books!
Beautifully written - it will appeal to old book lovers! (That is old books, not old people!) A tale of love, woven through family upsets and long ago secrets. I enjoyed the journey with the author, and I loved the fact that all the ends were tied up - it doesn't leave you wondering what happened!

Super tolles Buch. Schön geschrieben. Romantisch. Zum nachdenken.
Livro muito bom.
Este é um livro bem escrito e o fato de ter vários pontos de vista faz com que ele seja muito agradável de se ler . Recomendo!
Addictive and heartwarming
I started reading this because of the intriguing storyline-a protagonist with the ability to feel the past owners' echoes from old books. Then I just couldn't stop turning the pages to find out what happened next. The style of narrative which alternates between the past and present as well as between the guy's and girl's perspectives in parallel creates a fascinating tale of love, loss and reconciliation. It's more than just a love story, it touches on war history, family ties and more. It's absolutely brilliant and heartwarming!
Outstanding writing
Reading this book is pure joy. The writing, the characterisation and the plot perfectly aligned. An ambitious plot that mixes 3 characters' writing in 2 different periods. Something of Wuthering heights... Pure pleasure.
