‘Diplomacy’ was once defined to me as “the art of telling a man to go to hell in such a way that he actually looks forward to the trip.”And while I would not wish eternal damnnatiom on anyone, there are times when one must stand before the council and read to them some choice quotes from the proverbial riot act.Just understand that in order to make your point well and properly you must first have a solid working understanding of the terrain and how to navigate within these assemblies.There are rules for parliamentary assemblies that have been honed over centuries. There is good reason for that. In any civilized society people must be heard even or perhaps especially when their views may not be held by the majority. There are procedures spelled out in detail to give attendees a fair hearing, a chance to propose ideas, make and amend motions, elect officers, and everything that goes with.Parliamentary assemblies aren’t just public sector either. These rules apply to business meetings, fraternal organizations, labor unions, all manner of assembled bodies.“Robert’s Rules” come into play more than you may realize.Reading this book can be a bit of a drudgery.(Trust me, I’m currently 400 pages in with almost 300 more to go) and it’s necessary.What’s missing in our society is civil discourse. Study this then go to a council or school board meeting or whatever and you will find an understanding and an appreciation of the process that you may not have previously held.Gift copies of Robert’s Rules of Order to anyone in your life from middle school on up while you’re at it. Come a day when they’ll be grateful to have a proper paper copy of it handy.Having said all that, my copy arrived on time and in excellent shape. It appears to be of good quality paper and binding in its price point and I am quite satisfied with the purchase.It is highly recommended that every American household have a copy on the shelf.

The book itself needs no review as it's been around longer than me! It's a paperback, it's compact to fit in my bag to bring to my meetings. I would recommend purchasing the tab kit to tab out all the sections. It's a bit frustrating tying to get to a particular rule in the book on the fly when you're in a meeting and a question is raised. I'm happy with this purchase. I hope to rarely need to pull it out, but it's a must-have if your organization is using Roberts Rules for their meetings/assemblies.

If you want to know what people are talking about when they say they follow Robert's Rules of Order, then you should invest a little bit of money and find out. You'll probably find that the people who say they follow Robert's Rules of Order know less about what's really in it than they let on. Read it but also get the tabs for it and keep it with you. Know what your rights are and exercise them. You really can have a better functioning organization and less squabbles when you everyone practice better manners, by actually knowing the rules of order.

This masterpiece of mind-numbing procedural jargon has the unique ability to turn a lively debate into a contest of who can quote obscure subsections faster.It reads like a survival guide to navigating through a quagmire of parliamentary procedure. It's perfect for those who fantasize about wielding the gavel with the precision of a medieval executioner, ensuring every voice is heard but only after waiting through nine rounds of motions, amendments, and points of order. Its dense pages are sure to lull you into a trance-like state where dreams of adjournment and motions to reconsider dance through your head.For those who find joy in parsing phrases like "quorum call" and "previous question," this is your ticket to enlightenment.

This book is perfect as a parliamentary authority for organizations of any size and saved me many headaches when it came to writing bylaws. The only book your assemblies will ever need.
At Last - It's on Kindle!
Let's be honest. There are very few people on the face of the Earth who really WANT to read Robert's Rules of Order. But it's a venerable treatise on parliamentary law and constitutes the baseline parliamentary rule book for a blindingly wide array of civil organisations. So if you MUST read Robert's, let's pause a moment to THANK GOD that the Guardians of RRO have at long last decided to make an electronic version of the current edition of the work available at a normal cost. At last, it's possible to carry a version on one's laptop, tablet, or phone! At last, it's possible to conduct a full text search of the entire work! At last, it's super-easy to interpret and... oh wait. Scratch that last one. Although the editors do their best, it's still a fiddle to figure out. I suppose 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Until somebody can develop an AI to read it for us (coming soon, in the 26th Century) going all-electronic is the best innovation this work has seen in a long time. The long-departed General Robert would (I hope) be proud.
