5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating inside look at what therapy can be like at its best

B.E. · December 22, 2023

I read this book out of curiosity since the author and I went through the same doctoral program years ago. Although some of the theoretical sections seem a little wordy and dry, the case studies themselves are absolutely fascinating and engagingly presented! Dr. Cowan does a great job of describing in depth what deeply meaningful (not just symptom-oriented) therapy can be like with a therapist/counselor who is willing to reflect on his or her own part of the therapeutic relationship. Recommended reading for anyone in the mental health field or anyone with an interest in the topic; more realistic than the great HBO series In Treatment!

Just as another reviewer wrote, I read this book along with Teyber's Interpersonal Process in Therapy as part of my counseling training. I really loved this book. Each chapter is like reading a short story, weaved with honesty, counseling theory, and techniques. The author does a great job helping the reader visualize the different clients - ranging from a southern woman struggling with an eating disorder to a sassy teen who is a self-injurer. Each chapter, no matter what the client was struggling with, was captivating. Although it was for class, the book kept me fully engaged. I laughed out loud, cried like I knew the client, and was cheering them on with each page. I also appreciated the author's honesty as he explored his own feelings and experiences within the counseling sessions.Great. Great. Great.I actually plan on gifting it to a couple friends who are not studying to be counselors, but just enjoy learning about people and/or psychology.
