LIBRARY JOURNAL (STARRED) -- A Chinese American man named Owen Johnson's quest to solve the mystery behind his birth parent's disappearance leads him to the peak of a windswept mountain in China, where he discovers an ancient Shaolin temple inhabited by a group of warriors calling themselves the Order of the Flaming Fist. After proving his martial arts prowess, the order's leader, Master Wei Lun, invites Owen to stay and begin training. Soon, Owen begins a forbidden romance with another warrior, Ling Zan, and learns that the order has two missions: to rediscover the long-lost ability to generate devastating fireballs and to ensure their temple's secrets never fall into the hands of their adversaries, the Scorched Earth Clan.
VERDICT Kirkman (
Oblivion Song. Vol. 3) and Samnee (Black Widow: The Complete Collection) have created a fun homage to classic martial arts films and comic books, and while this volume serves as a prelude to an upcoming monthly series, it includes more than enough action and intrigue to satisfy on its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected

Y.H. · June 5, 2025

I was expecting this story to be completely derivative of a certain anime that we are all familiar with that has to do with different nations 1 of them being fire nation. :). And while initially it did kind of go along those lines there was a left turn taken in the story telling that I did not see coming and I was pleasantly surprised. Where that left turn took me was fun and also made me wish that I didn't have wait for my book club to get up with me so that I could move on to the next book LOL.The characters were fleshed out enough To get you through this Initial world building issue, But there is still plenty of characters who need to be fleshed out and there is lots of room for Already covered characters to grow even more.In this 1st issue questions were answered and more questions were revealed. It's a fun beginning to what might be a heavy story. I highly recommend giving this story a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a great series!

And now for something completely different...I started buying this comic thanks to the Chris Samnee art. I've been following his work the last few years through Daredevil, Captain America and Black Widow series and his work has only got better. I don't really care one way or another about Walking Dead, but Kirkman impresses me here with his coordination of action and family life. And of course the coloring by Matt Wilson deserves special recognition--it's gorgeous. Every character adds to this terrific read from the lead character's family (and dog!) to the denizens of the monastery he was raised in. Surprises come just about every issue and it's all leading up to a big blowout in issue #18, which was just published. This graphic novel introduces all of this and is one of the best start to a series I've ever read--and I've been reading comics since the mid-1960s!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, quick read.

Story was easy to pick up and fall into. Really enjoyed 5 the character development and the pace of the story. Really helps set the tone for the first two issues of the series that follow this prequel story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kirkman just knows good story

R. · July 14, 2021

Hard to judge this title based only on volume 1 since Kirkman (IMO) is usually a slow starter when it comes to his comics. Maybe Walking Dead is the exception. Here, Firepower appears to be a familiar story, not unlike Dr. Strange who also literally climbs a mountain to find a secret training dojo to learn mystical martial arts. Where Kirkman excels is his little tweaks to archetypes. Like the Sifu/Teacher who wears Jordan’s, listens to hip hop on his iPod and chews bubblegum. The action is drawn well, always a challenge with Kung Fu in comics and the story moves at a decent pace. No jaw dropping twists here: it’s only the prelude. The plot shifts pick up in Vol. 2…

5.0 out of 5 stars Firepower prelude

G.n. · September 26, 2023

It was on sale so I couldn't pass it up. This is awesome I read the first issue for free comic book day when it first came out and It was a lot of fun. The prelude and the first issue were available on the same day but I never bothered buying it cause it was sold out at my comic shop but for the price I said why not. This takes place years before issue one, it's not a mandatory read for the series but it does add some backstory and references. And after reading it for the cover price its definitely worth the purchase. In a time when marvel comics are getting repetitive or just don't have the shine that they used to, it's great seeing something new that takes inspiration from them but with a good twist and breath of fresh air. I would definitely recommend buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!

This is a great showcase of Chris Samnee’s art, with extended fight sequences excellently choreographed, balanced with quiet moments of visual storytelling. Kirkman’s writing is just as good, setting up an expansive mythology and a colorful cast of characters that pays homage to classic kung fu movies and comics, and polishes them up and makes them feel fresh again.

Good art ,good story. The characters are diverse and interesting. I suppose it's a little cliche'y but I don't mind that much. The old man is my favorite character.

Excellent "prelude"!

Another hit for Robert Kirkman and Skybound. You can see the outline of a TV show in the story, settings and characters, but this doesn't detract from what is a wonderful introduction to a new series.Releasing the "origin" arc in one fell swoop continues from the die! Die! Die! Single issue cold release...and it works, as often the introductory story pieces can seem slow when you just want to get into the filling of the pie.The story works very well, has good, well drawn (if a little clichéd) characters and enough intrigue is created in the final third to warrant me chasing down the subsequent releases as and when they drop through comoxology as single issues.Chris Samnee and the entire art team are on song for this, Chris draws beautiful comic books and you get the feeling he's having fun here, freed from the shackles of mark waids insistent politics in his most recent marvel works. If you're a kirkman fan, or even just a fan of good, solid, fun action adventure stories, give this a whirl. Even more so if you're mad into martial arts films (especially the classic karate kid)!

Buon inizio. Kirkman è una garanzia.

R. · May 24, 2022

Consigliato.
