In the Hide: How the Natural World Saved My Life

Description:

Our estate was built on land claimed from fields – we were at the foot of those rolling Kilpatrick hills, but over the roof of the school you could see more green fields and woods. I felt grateful to be on the edge of all that countryside – there was a magnetic pull towards what I thought that wild was, or could be. ‘ One day, I’ m going to walk to those hills and woods,’ I’ d think to myself.

Soon, it would become a sanctuary.

Gordon Buchanan is probably the best known natural history cameraman the BBC has ever produced. From wild 'snow wolf' packs in Ellesmere and polar bears in Svalbard to leopards in Mumbai and equine therapy in Mongolia, he has filmed in the world's most far-reaching places for over 30 years. His dedication to his craft means he often spends weeks inside a cramped camera hide, tolerating extreme sleep deprivation and poor living conditions, all in search of that one extraordinary shot.

But dangerous animals were not the only thing he was hiding from.

In the Hide is Gordon's emotionally honest and raw account of a brutal childhood in Glasgow and Mull, and the escape and solace he found – and continues to find – in the natural world around him. An intimate and inspiring account of resilience in the face of hardship, In the Hide marks the arrival of a bold new voice in nature writing.

Great read.

A vividly written account of an amazing man.

I first discovered Gordon Buchanan's work on Big Cat Diary, and then with his film Eagle Island around 2005 as a result of that & his Springwatch work, we took the first of numerous holiday trips to the Isle of Mull. In 2008 I worked on a local Springwatch project & with my teenage daughter, met & worked alongside Gordon. Since then my daughter & I have attended many of his talks & lectures & loved the "Family & Me" series. So when I saw he was bringing out a book about his life, I was keen to get a copy. I knew a little about his early start in Wildlife work as I have Nick Gordon's books about his work in the Bolo. What I hadn't expected was the sheer honesty and openness of Gordon Buchanan's book, about his childhood & upbringing, his young life on Mull, and the deep lows of his depression in later adult life. There is much about wildlife experiences, some "advice" on getting into nature camera work & the pros and cons of doing the job. Anecdotes abound regarding his better known experiences such as the polar bear filming from inside the perspex cube, and his close encounters with wolves and bears. But there is much much more in this book! I was moved, I laughed, I read bits out loud to my husband in bed, and I am re-reading the book having galloped through it the first time.If you only know Gordon from Springwatch or the Family & Me series, do buy this brilliant book. If I could give more than 5 stars I would do!

Fabulous read, loved every page

I absolutely loved this book. Gordon shares key moments in his life with raw honesty- often heartbreaking- but often also with a good sense of humour that made me giggle. From a difficult but in a way also carefree childhood to finding his feet in his profession, the message I took away is that if you persevere and don't give up, you can achieve anything. Going through a rough time in my life at the moment, the book could not have landed in my hands at a better time and gave me some hope and comfort, as cheesy as this might sound. The only thing I did not like was when I finished the book.Ignore the one and two star ratings. I suspect that the individuals did not even read the book and certainly did not leave a review.Thank you, Gordon for sharing your life story with us and putting yourself out there. You are an inspiration ❤️

Bought this book as a present for my girlfriend for Valentine's as we are both fans of Gordon's work. She's only just started to read it, but is already deeply into it. Judging by how riveted she is, I'm looking forward to reading it next.We also had tickets to Lions & Tigers & Bears which we saw earlier this week. Just fantastic. You really feel his passion for wildlife and the journey it's taken him on.Grab yourself a book and get tickets for the tour, you won't be disappointed.
