An exceptionally broad, clear, and fair-minded treatment of social science research methodology

John Gerring, Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin -- John Gerring Published On: 2018-06-28

Dawn Brancati′s Social Science Research is a fun, engaging, and intelligent book about the basics of research design. I wish I had it when I was an undergraduate.

Gary King is the Weatherhead University Professor at Harvard University.

-- Gary King

Rich with examples from across the social sciences and comprehensive in its treatment of the diverse empirical tools that social scientists use, Brancati′s book will greatly help students to grow their abilities to be both consumers and producers of research. The writing is crisp and engaging throughout, and the end-of-chapter exercises work to fix key concepts in students′ minds.

Matthew S. Winters, Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

-- Matthew Winters

For faculty, teaching how to conduct social science research is known to be notoriously difficult. For students, learning research methods is mind-numbing. Brancati′s book offers a solution to this decades-long dilemma. Inter-weaving concepts with examples from cutting-edge research, Social Scientific Research succinctly explains what makes good social science and how to do it.

Kosuke Imai, Author of Quantitative Social Science: An Introduction (Princeton University Press)

-- Kosuke Imai

Dawn Brancati has written a social science methods book that is, in one, the broadest and most accessible text I have seen. In addition to being a terrific stand alone text for an introductory methods course, it would be an excellent addition to an introductory course in data analysis and statistics to give students a sense of the range of other research methods available and of issues, beyond methodology, in social science research.

Robert Y. Shapiro is a professor of Political Science at Columbia University

? -- Robert Shapiro

Brancati′s Social Scientific Research is an important book. It is readable, comprehensive, and a great starting point for those new to research in the social sciences. Brancati―a masterful mentor to both undergraduate and graduate resesearchers―covers research design, both quantitative and qualtitative methods, and provides rich practical guidance for those doing their own research projects or assessing the work of others. I highly recommend this widely to those who both want to understand and do social science.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful book- and one that I am likely to use in class the next time I teach a research class

a very useful book- and one that I am likely to use in class the next time I teach a research class. The author provides a very useful overview for students about how to do different kinds of research including research ethics, how to identify a research question, how to do a lit review and how to do different kinds of research from qualitative to quantitative to experiments. I strongly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific resource.

This is a really terrific text, well organized and clear, written by a clear authority on the subject. I highly recommend it for teaching and as resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars Balanced and focused

I like that "Social Scientific Research" by Dawn Brancati is balanced. The various methods are described well and they are given a balanced treatment. The author presents exercises but doesn't go overboard with them. The text and graphics don't clash with each other. In fact, the number of graphics is limited which makes them stand out in context to the subject matter rather than distracting from the subject matter. The objectives are clear and concise. I would have liked to see a bit more of a summary and conclusion at the end of the chapters but it does have a list of key points as well as further reading and exercises. Overall, I liked it and found it to be balanced and focused.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific guide for social scientific research

There are many books of this kind out there, but I highly, highly recommend this one. It's clearly written and covers a wide range of methods very thoroughly. It provides practical examples to guide the reader through each method/approach. I could see this being helpful for both undergrads and grad students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand

Makes dry concepts easy to understand and relatable to the real world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide for research techniques and confidence.

N. · July 31, 2019

Because I read so many sociology books, I was curious about the process that then turns into these fascinating nonfiction tales of our society. This book is for sociology students, but the layperson will find the process interesting as well because you get to see the inner workings of how such research is put together into a story well told.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Big Stars

This illuminating text offers an engaging introduction to research methods for all students in the social sciences. A welcome addition to the field, I find this volume to be an unsurpassed volume that wonderfully explicates the key stages of the research process. Sure to be the first of many editions!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Soft Methods In The Hard Sciences and Technology As Well As Soc Sci

I.L. · July 3, 2019

An extensive yet introductory (NO ASSUMPTIONS) text of Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences. This excellent survey is also extremely useful to the increasing numbers of technology and computer researchers who must approach their chosen audience with in depth "soft methods" in determining the desirability and acceptance of new technologies.
