Veena and the Red Roti: A Story of Hope During Partition

Description:

Set during the Partition of India, a moving story about a girl who helps others the only way she knows how: by cooking up a small taste of home.

Veena loves her home, especially spending time in the kitchen learning how to make roti. But everything changes when India suddenly becomes free from British rule, and the country is to be divided in two according to religion. Fearing for their safety, Veena’s family flees in the middle of the night. They make their way to a dusty and crowded refugee camp, where life is difficult and her family struggles. Even the roti is different from what Veena remembers from home. She wants to do something to bring hope and comfort to the people at the camp. By making them tasty roti, maybe Veena can use her skills to lift everyone’s spirits.

This poignant picture book is based on the experience of author Namita Moolani Mehra’s grandparents, who left nearly everything behind when they fled Sindh province in 1947 during the Partition of India. Sensitively written, the story can serve as an excellent starting point for classroom discussions of migration and refugees. Veena is an engaging and resourceful girl who helps put a face to the refugee experience. Beena Mistry’s colorful illustrations bring a relatable warmth to the story. The content also connects to social studies lessons on conflict and change, local and global communities, and the cultural importance of food. Back matter includes an author’s note, a map, contextual information about Partition and a glossary.

The story engages the senses as bangles jingle-jangle over the buttery smell of ghee as Veena kneads, rolls, turns, flips, and stacks the rotis. A colorful, child-friendly take on a complex historical subject not often seen in children's literature.―

Namita Mehra’s skillful, well-crafted language immediately draws the reader into the warmth of the family kitchen where Veena learns to make roti. This warmth provides a sharp contrast to the ordeal of homelessness that Veena and her family endure because of partition. Mehra deftly brings her readers on Veena’s journey, traveling with her from joy to sorrow to hope. Lovely illustrations by Beena Mistry.

Veena and the Red Roti: A Story of Hope During Partition shines a light on a historical event that many of us are unfamiliar with. Told through the viewpoint of young Veena, this picture book begins in a happy kitchen filled with the “warmth and words’ of the chatting women. Veena works hard to learn to make perfectly round and soft roti, an Indian flatbread. Unfortunately, when India is partitioned after independence, Veena and her family are forced to flee to a migrant camp. Life there is dismal, and Veena wants to help her family. She is resourceful and creatively figures out how to make roti, even though she doesn’t have the necessary ingredients. This is an emotional and heart-filled story which shows what one young person can do to bring joy and hope to others. Filled with sensory details and vivid illustrations, this is a book meant to be read aloud. The back matter includes a history of the partition, a glossary, and the true story of the author’s aunt who was the inspiration for this beautiful picture book.

Veena loves helping her mother and aunties out in the kitchen of her home. She loves learning how to make perfect roti. And she loves her extended family and everything about her life. But then politics interrupts. After Veena's family drops everything and leaves in the middle of the night during the partitioning of India, they end up at a refugee camp and must start over from scratch. And while Veena's father goes off to find work, Veena watches her mother cry, processing her grief. This makes Veena determined to bring back memories of home by helping in the camp's kitchen. And through her efforts there, gives others hope. A beautiful, heart-filled story. Back matter includes historical context and a personal note from the author.

VEENA AND THE RED ROTI is a powerful, heart-string-pulling, emotional piece of story-telling. Through the eyes of Veena, we learn about the impact the partition of India has on our young mc, her family, and the community she loves. In spite of challenges, sadness, and uncertainty, our hero finds a way to connect everyone to a sense of the comfort they once knew (in spite of the distance). Veena's roti is nowhere near the delicious taste of home, but she still bakes love and hope into her symbolic rounds. The author's note explains the history in more depth, adding a whole new level of emotion and meaning by detailing her personal connection to the story. The art is touching and gives a sense of a child's eye view of her confusing and changing surroundings. It is a beautiful book and I highly recommend it.

The best stories are family stories, and this sweet little picture book, about a very bad time, is based on the authors' stories they have heard from their great aunts, uncles and grandparents.Veena has learned how to make roti, a round flatbread. She is very proud of that. Then Partition happens, when the UK left India, and divided it up between the Hindus and the Muslims. Suddenly, everyone had to move tho their new locations, and Veena is uprooted along, with her parents, and have to settle, for a time in a refugee camp. There, she offers to make roti, even though it is not done with wheat flour.Food is often the first memory, and the longest memory we have. To taste foods from childhood, can take us back. Veena learns to make the roti taste, as close as she can, to that she remembered from home, so that when they finally leave the refugee camp, they take this new version of flatbread, with them.I love the simple way the story is told, and how the fear and sorrow is also displayed. This is a great book to teach about Partition, as well as to teach about foods that people love.
