5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, Thorough Prep Book
TL;DR: If you are a self-motivated person, I recommend buying this prep book due to the thorough explanations, good paper quality, and plenty of practice problems (with thorough explanations of the correct answers) albeit the textbook-like nature of the book. No pain, no gain!Let me preface by describing what kind of student I am. I am a rising junior that has self-motivation to study independently. I wanted to get a SAT Prep book that is higher quality than the run-of-the mill SAT Prep Books out there. For reference, I have read cover to cover the 2016 edition of the Kaplan SAT Prep book. Using that only, my PSAT score was 1350, 690 in Math and 660 in reading. For some, this is a good score. However, I wanted to push beyond that and perhaps score above a 1500. I have never went to any tutoring places.Along with this book, I am using the practice on Khan Academy. After my October 2017 test, I will try to update my review.Pros about this book:Very Thorough Explantions: Ms.Meltzer's explanation are very high quality and it is almost as if I have her by my side explaining the mistakes I made. I am not the most talented when it comes to English, however with Ms.Meltzer's explanation of the what the SAT test likes to regularly test, and the fundamentals of English, I feel like I am learning more from this book than I have done this past English class.Good Paper Quality: I don't know about anyone else, but I personally hate the flimsy, newspapery paper of the mass produced SAT Prep books (like Kaplan, Princeton, Barron's, etc). Just a personal preferencePlenty of Practice: The book is divided into chapters of study. In each chapter, there is an explanation of the concept, along with a couple of practice problems that Ms.Meltzer walks you through. As I said, the explanations are killer. What I like even more is that the chapter has EVEN MORE PRACTICE QUESTIONS at the back of the chapter, and it tests only on the topic you learned. For example, if the chapter is Vocabulary in Context, there is a couple Vocab in Context practice problems and then even more practice problems (with answers and explanations on a separate page) paired with full length articles. I really like this feature of the book.Cons:Price(?): At first I was a little hesitant on buying the book because of how expensive the book was relative to its pages (I purchase everything out of my pocket). However as I am 3/4th done with the book, I don't regret paying the price for the quality of this book.Textbook-Like: The only, ONLY, complaint I have about this book is that BECAUSE it is so thorough, the explanations can get a little dry, especially if you are working independently. I admit, there are times when I am self-studying and I get really bored reading after reading. But honestly, this is totally tolerable and doable. At first I was going to write the review AFTER I have taken my test and AFTER I received my score. However, because of the high quality nature of this book for a person like me, I wanted to give my two cents.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Break-Down of the SAT Reading Section
Erica Meltzer is a critical reader. She has spent years working with the SAT (and ACT), breaking down the Reading and Writing sections and disseminating their secrets. The Critical Reader is the culmination of that work. This is my #1 book suggestion for students who struggle with the reading section of the SAT, with some reservations. If English is your second language, and you never read for pleasure, this book won't get you a perfect reading score. Most ESL students have holes in their vocabulary, cultural knowledge, and reading abilities that get them stuck in the mid-600s for the Reading/Writing Section. No SAT study book will fix fundamental Reading and Writing Skill problems. Also if you are not good at self-studying, then you might need some hand-holding with this book because the contents are dense. If you didn't fall into one of the previous categories, then I would suggest you buy this book. The book is broken down into an overview of the test and test taking skills and then a chapter on each of the types of Reading questions you will encounter. Each chapter takes a question type and breaks it down to the smallest details and explains how to approach the question and what constitutes a wrong answer. There are thorough explanations of both the correct and the incorrect answers and then practice questions to practice your new knowledge. In the back of the book is a break down to the first 4 College Board tests, identifying each of the reading questions type, so that students can identify the questions that give the the most trouble and review those chapters.Just The Facts:Targeted practice for the Reading section onlyNo full tests, just targeted practice questionsPaper Quality: Excellent. You can write and erase without worrying about tearing throughQuality of Answer Explanations: Excellent
4.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed and good for those who learn well from reading
I liked how it gave little details and tips that will help you succeed on the SAT. If you are just starting to prepare as a Sophomore, I think this book is wonderful to prepare step by step. However, if you are a Senior or Juinor about to take the test, I don't think this will be that helpful. But I do recommend it for those who want to boost their EBRW score and have some time to prepare.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for getting back strategies for SAT
This book was recommended for my son from his college councillor to improve his SAT reading and writing score. My son is a top scorer so I found this book simpler/easier than the other book we were recommended (Kallis' SAT Pattern). That being said, My freshman daughter has benefited a lot form this simpler/easier book as it goes over strategies slower and in more detail and more practice. A very good book for someone who need to learn strategies and is having trouble scoring well on SAT or even PSAT.
5.0 out of 5 stars Every student who struggles with SAT reading must have one!
This book is the most helpful one among all the study guide I have purchased. The author analyzes every type of question that might appear in the test, along with how students often respond to it and how they SHOULD respond to it by using certain techniques. I think it is the best part about this book because the author knows how they would solve the problem in inefficient way when encountering certain question, so she can offer a better method to save time. She also points out a lot of concept that I didn't pay much attention before, which is the key to get the answer. There are detailed and clear step-by-step guide to approach the question and analyze each answer choices, why it should be picked and why it shouldn't. Each topic are followed by short practices in the end, which is very convenient. I believe that understanding all the strategies in the book and applying them on the test will be extremely helpful and prevent students from panicking.
