The Spiritual Art of Business: Connecting the Daily with the Divine

Description:

We want the thousands of hours we will work over our lifetime to matter. But how do we know they're really significant? How do we go from being defined by what we do to having our work become an expression of who we are?

There is not a quick fix but a progressive solution: it begins with surrendering our whole lives and then every moment of our lives to God. In The Spiritual Art of Business, "corporate mystic" Barry Rowan invites us to be transformed by God that he might transform the world through us as we begin to see our work as an extension of our faith. He says, "We don't derive meaning from our work; we bring meaning to our work." Relating his extensive past in high-ranking executive roles, Rowan beckons us into a connection with God that will infuse our lives, our offices, and our world with meaning.

With forty short chapters, this is not just a book to be read but instead is an invitation into an experience with God. Here's an opportunity to ponder new perspectives and see business as a chance to serve God by contributing to a better society.

Just wrapped up The Spiritual Art of Business by Barry L. Rowan, and it deeply affirmed something I’ve believed for a long time: our work and our faith aren’t separate—they’re deeply intertwined.Rowan doesn’t just make the case for that connection—he takes it further, inviting us to see business as a sacred act of service and love. He challenges the profit-first mindset and calls us back to something higher: helping people flourish. It’s not about adding spirituality to our leadership—it’s about uncovering the spiritual essence that’s already there when we lead with purpose, humility, and love. What stood out to me is how clearly he articulates the responsibility we carry as stewards—not just of resources, but of people, vision, and impact. The idea that loving God and loving our neighbor can be the ultimate measure of our work is simple, yet incredibly powerful. This book didn’t introduce a new idea to me—it validated a belief I hold deeply and helped me explore it more intentionally. It’s a reminder that the daily grind can be holy ground, and that surrendering our plans to something greater can transform not just our businesses, but the people within them.Highly recommend it for anyone wanting to go deeper into purpose-driven leadership and faith-integrated work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making sense of our lives and what we do. The intersection of faith, wisdom, and business

Change my view of faith in business. This experienced CFO and later CEO who turned around some very large multinational businesses shows how his faith guided him in making sense of what he does for a living. Insightful and filled with wisdom, I have pages of journal notes from the authors "aha" moments in life. I've bought copies and passed them on.I reckoned this to be a devotional written for Christians. While in London on a vacation, a woman I never met saw the book on my breakfast table. She said, "Great book." We talked and I discovered she is an atheist and therapist who uses this book to teach mindfulness in business. Clearly, people are finding broad application here.

“We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose” Romans 8:28I truly wish I’d read this wonderful book 40 years ago when I was just a mere 34 years old, as it contains many life and lessons that hopefully would have had a positive impact as I embarked on taking on roles of increasing responsibility at work and raising a family.Barry highlights a four part journey: Surrendered…discovering freedom in submission to Jesus; Transformed…learning new ways of thinking and being; Realigned…bringing meaning to our work; and Sent…fulfilling God’s will in the worldThis journey involves a conscious integration of our faith with our work…a path that all Christ-centered “leaders” should take (everyone is a leader at some point in time)All 40 chapters are filled with biblical, spiritual, and practical wisdomThis is a book to be cherished and revisited again and again by Christian business leadersI strongly recommend this book for people in “leadership” positions, or those who influence current or potential “ leaders”, and want to fulfill the purpose in the work God has ordained for them to be his shining light on earth. The format of the book lends itself to both self-study and group study.I pray you will be blessed by Barry’s book as much as I continue to be. (My husband, Jim Funk, retired Shell executive)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Practical Guide on how to integrate Christian beliefs into daily life

Barry's book, "The Spiritual Art of Business" was an incredible read. Written to be worked through and digestible, it took me about two weeks to get through it. I am rereading it, just doing a chapter a day to let the ideas marinate more. When I read this book I thought of a St. Francis quote "Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words". Barry's book gives practical ways to do this, and also has guiding questions to help you identify the ways you can practice this in your own unique situations. This book is more than just a read, but the questions almost make it such where it is a mentorship experience with the questions he asks us. The prompts have pushed me to question, reflect, and grow. For anyone at the crossroads of spiritual growth and professional development, this book is a beacon, illuminating a path that is both righteous and rewarding.I highly recommend this book to all Christians! One of the best books I have read and worked through in a long time!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh, transformative approach to Christian business

K.c.s. · March 6, 2024

As a follower of Jesus whose career has been spent with large Fortune 500 corporations, I have always sought wisdom on how my faith influences my work. Most books on Christians and work tend to be very tactical, focusing on the moral aspects of business while sharing some leadership stories or insights. While Rowan has many stories to share, his focus on Christian spirituality and business refreshing and ultimately more impactful. In some ways, it’s as if he brings the best of the Christian spiritual writers like Dallas Willard or Eugene Peterson to our careers and work lives. His goal in writing this book is to transform the heart and from it will flow a life in the world that Christ desires.
