5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of good information!

This book covers a LOT of ground. Chapters on mind, wellness, body, face, hair, spirit and space, with 6 specific sections within each. I felt like enough information was given regarding things I was interested to learn more about (for example, I found the section on meditation helpful), but not all-encompassing. On the flip side, there were parts of the book I didn’t find applicable to my interests (such as detoxing), but it wasn’t a lot to read. This is a guide to many aspects of self-care, of course not every section will apply to me. Which is fine! Someone else may think meditation is worthless. I don’t know your life. You do you.2. This book really shines in the grooming sections.3. This is an excellent introduction to many aspects of self care, and will be the most beneficial if you choose 2-3 things to try and actually use regularly to start. Changing habits is a slow process and could be really overwhelming if you misunderstand the intention of this book, which is to learn a little bit about lots of things that could fulfill you, then choosing the ones that speak to you in order to improve your life.Overall, 5/5. It’s a great introduction to many aspects of self care, which we all need in our lives. Taking from this book what works for you and applying so that you feel better is a win-win. This book was written for ALL men, who don’t all have the same interests. So take what you like, change your life, have an open mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the right amount of advice

J.M. · May 21, 2020

There’s so much online I can feel like I’m drowning in commentary on something as narrow as curly hair. Munce gives you enough to make sense of things and a good perspective. He goes from personal care to where you live. I liked that he didn’t spend the whole book on skincare products or the like. Not all the topics were to my taste, but overall it was helpful and pleasant to read. He’s got a sense of humor that comes through about everything. Good place to start for a recent graduate or a boomer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good advice

Overall this book is good, I kinda already practice some of the suggestions, so I gave it a 4. 🙂

3.0 out of 5 stars New Age is Now Age? Really?

W.M. · May 11, 2020

There are things to like about this book, but there's a lot to hate. The info on skin and hair care is good. Much of the rest falls short. For example, in a book about self-care for men (or for anyone), I expect a chapter on nutrition. Instead I find a chapter about smudging and the value of crystals. I have NOTHING against New Age thought, but I disagree wholeheartedly with the author that "New age is now age." You can tell me about Feng Shui (as he does in the chapter on space), but spare me the list of the best crystals for men.I'm also told, in chapter 1, to ditch the caffeine. I choose not to. And I wonder if the author is familiar with the studies and research that convincingly argue that caffeine has proven health benefits. The entire section on exercise (seven pages) consists of some suggestions for stretching. Stretching is wonderful...but I daresay that men interested in self-care want more. There's advice on how to go about getting and caring for a tattoo...pass.The final straw for me was the section titled "How to Be an Extrovert." The author says that "there is nothing wrong with being an introvert," but then he takes great pains to explain how not to be one. He seems to equate introverts with lonely souls who lack personal relationships, and the underlying tone is one of mild condescension and pity toward introverts. As a healthy introvert with plenty of close relationships, and as someone who has really read just about everything out there on the topic, I'm curious about how the author comes up with his gloomy view of us. He says a few times that "studies have shown...," yet I see no citations. All in all, a book with promise fell flat.I'll be returning it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great info in one concise package

R. · May 21, 2020

The book has loads of helpful tips. Although all the information won't necessarily be useful to every reader, it's presented in a way that's easy to digest and will be handy as a resource when needed. Many men do nothing beyond the basics because they feel that advanced grooming is too complicated. The book provides a useful stepping-off point for better skin care and healthy grooming habits without overwhelming the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helping Me

I really like this book. It’s giving me a nice perspective and helping me change things in my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book

B. · May 30, 2020

Really complete and well written in an easy accessible way. I learned tons of easy ways to care for myself. Ways I'd never thought of before. I've started using many of the ideas and guidance in the book and it's great.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pseudoscience

A.B. · March 31, 2021

Only giving two stars because I think it gives a good starting point for self-care, but it's chock full of pseudoscience. Acupuncture, crystals, detoxing, other quackery. Don't buy if you're looking for non BS advice.I'm sure it has great grooming advice so that's a plus I guess.

Terrible Quality!

This is a great book that every man should read but the quality of the book is beyond just bad. I received this book in a terrible condition. It’s practically falling apart. All I need to do is leave it open on my desk and it will be two books instead of one. The pages have been cut with a blunt scissor by the looks of it and the binding is not at all done. Where is the quality?

Good info, terrible paper quality.

L. · August 25, 2023

Not sure if it’s a one off or all are like this but the edge of every page almost seems torn by hand, it’s very odd.The info inside the book is there, and it’s good stuff, so the book still works, but that page turning satisfaction is completely removed with the edges rough and uneven. Weird issue.

Shabby quality

s. · September 15, 2022

This is a VERY poor second. The guillotine was clearly out of alignment and blunt. The pages are roughly cut and very uneven. I bought this as a gift for my son. I won't be giving this. Very disappointed that the vendor tried to offload this rubbish. I certainly would not have bought this if I had seen it on a bookshelf.

Refreshing guide for men (or anyone really) on how to approach and improve overall well-being

L. · May 29, 2020

I bought this book as a Father’s Day gift and have gotten into the habit of reading books before I give them away. I found it a concise yet thorough collection of recommendations on how to improve the balance and development of practices for holistic well-being. Garrett is refreshingly straightforward on topics that many men have a tendency to shy away from creating a non-judgemental approach to encourage change. The guide provides practical advice on how to pick and choose things that work for you to build self-care into every day versus being something that is only done as an event. While I am confident the recipient of my gift will find it valuable, it also served as a reminder to me to purposefully raise my son to value and create the self-care habits that will better support him through adulthood. I even took a few tips away for myself!

Not worth the read if you read a lot of self care

A. · March 18, 2025

The book wasn't really insighful for me, and I hated the quality of the book. the pages were crumpled and felt like I got it second hand.
