“A superbly written, drawn, and inked comic that resonates emotionally with adult readers. Abe Sapien being granted his own ongoing series (at long, long last) has lived up to expectation.”—Geeked Out Nation

About the Author

Mike Mignola's fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. Starting in 1982 as a bad inker for Marvel Comics, he swiftly evolved into a not-so-bad artist. By the late 1980s, he had begun to develop his own unique graphic style, with mainstream projects like Cosmic Odyssey and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. In 1994, he published the first Hellboy series through Dark Horse. There are thirteen Hellboy graphic novels (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien, and Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder), prose books, animated films, and two live-action films starring Ron Perlman. Along the way he worked on Francis Ford Coppola's film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer for Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), and was the visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). Mike's books have earned numerous awards and are published in a great many countries. Mike lives in Southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.

Great artwork from industry-kings will be enjoyed within these pages. The stories will enchant as much as they will disturb you. This is a real treasure for anyone with an affinity for monsters.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great collection of stories

4 stars - It was really goodThis is a collection of stories from Abe’s times as an agent with the BRPD and his hunt for his origins. This edition contains the stories: The Drowning, Casualties, the Haunted Boy, The Land of the Dead, Witchcraft & Demonology, The Abyssal Plain, The Devil Does Not Jest, The Ogopogo, Subconscious, Lost Lives and Icthyo Sapian. As a fan of the Hellboy series I knew I wanted to continue reading Magnola’s work. I jumped into this series first because Abe was one of my favorite characters from the Hellboy series. These are self contained stories, like in the Hellboy series, that take place before and after the Hellboy comics. As someone who has not read any of the BRPD series, I had no problems with following the stories. A few of these stories do discuss major events that happen in the BRPD series but it didn’t impact that specific story because they are self contained. Once I read BRPD I am sure those references will be understood but for now they didn’t bother me.I really enjoyed these stories from Abe’s POV because while he is different physically like Hellboy, he acts completely different. Abe doesn’t remember his past and struggles to be ‘human’ and relatable like Hellboy can. Abe is just a great character that has some great character development with each story.Overall, this was a great collection of stories featuring Abe. I can’t wait to jump into the next book and see what else he has done. Also, I really want to know more about his past now that I have seen a glimpse of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The comic is great, amazons shipping not so much.

T.J. · September 5, 2023

As normal the Abe Sapien stories are amazing and it's good quality. However I suggest getting it somewhere else. The first time I received the graphic novel it was absolutely mangled, back corner bent halfway up the back of the novel, with dents all over the spine and other corners. The second time it was still dented on the spine showing the white beneath the cover. I got a partial refund on thankfully. Bolos shipping when it comes to books/graphic novels is very poor.

Abe Sapien has been a highlight of Mike Mignola's elaborate universe that Abe and his BPRD agents inhabit. This collection is first-rate, with evocative, excellent artwork and Mignola's patented world-building. Get this one!

Good quality. Pages are thicker than most graphic novels and collected editions. This collects volumes 1, 2, & 9 of the Ape Sabin series.

Wonderful

M. · August 31, 2018

The stories are great but this is also very well put together, far better quality than some other anthologies/collections. My wife has even let me keep this one on the living room bookshelf rather than in the drawers under my desk!

Very unhappy

A.C. · October 29, 2023

Was excited to get this book but the first one i received was extremely gross condition and the replacement that I received, which is pictured is absolutely bent and scuffed up which is unacceptable

Very weird choices to include in this version.

J.S. · September 2, 2018

Why did they include volumes 1, 2, 3, and 9 of the trade paperbacks in the hardcover? it makes no sense! I could be wrong about them including 3, but I do remember them include volume 9 for some strange reason. I returned it because mine arrived damaged. It just has the weirdest choices of content to include in the hardcover. Why didn't they just do volumes 1 and 2 of the trade paperbacks and call it a day with a cheaper price since those are the best.
