This book was great. Full of twists and turns keeping me turning the pages into the wee hours. Thoroughly enjoyed
4.0 out of 5 stars Really good
I would actually give this one 4.5 if I could. I didn't give it 5 stars just because I like some of Donlea's other books better. This one was still very interesting with well-developed characters and a good plot. I'm not sure I'm completely satisfied with the ending, though. I had most everything figured out about two-thirds of the way through and some of his other books had me guessing until the very end. Definitely well written and I will probably read anything this author publishes.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written!
Suspenseful writing that has you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think you have the plot figured out - the author twists and what you thought you knew has to be amended. The writing is clear, concise and seems realistic. The characters have depth. The story line does "jump" back and forth between past and present but the indicators are clear and the change adds to the intrigue in the storyline.Story addresses high functioning autism - how they are treated and valued in the 1970's versus now and the nuances of being hyper focused. The hyper focus of one person discovers a serial killer while this skill helps another recreate crime scenes (no matter how cold they are). The story also addresses the life saving value of true friendship and keeping a secret all the way to the grave. You will fall in love with Rory, Lane, Angela, Greta, and Frank. You will see yourself in at least one of them - and that makes the story all the more real. You will also find yourself getting the next book in the series as quickly as you finish this one!
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent thriller!!
Well written, fast pace. Incredible trama. You cannot put it down. I recommend it 120%. You never imagine the relationships between the characters.
4.0 out of 5 stars 4 Stars
This suspense filled thriller was a great way to kick off 2020.SUMMARYThis story is told from multiple points of view and two different time lines. Rory is the main present time narrator, Angela is the main narrator from 1979.Rory is a unique woman with a nearly photographic memory, social anxiety and OCD. She is a non-practicing attorney who recreates crime scenes and solves cold cases for the Chicago police. When her attorney father dies unexpectedly, she is left to settle his affairs as both an only child and an in name only partner in his law firm. Rory was surprised to find out her father had represented a notorious murderer forty years ago and is still retained by him. His staunch, continued defense of this man and the work he continued on this man's behalf seems completely out of character for Rory's dad. As she starts investigating her father's connection to this man, she just keeps finding more and more questions.Angela is also unique. She is a mildly autistic, OCD woman in 1979. She was terribly misunderstood as it was very difficult for her to live in a time before autism was well known. After she met her husband, Thomas, her life began to feel normal. She was able to manage her symptoms better as an adult, she finally had a real friend, she had a nice home and Thomas made her feel safe. She was actually very happy for the first time in her life.Angela's story picks up in the summer of 1979 in Chicago. The whole city was shaken by a series of missing women, over just a few months four women had disappeared. There were no suspects and no signs of the missing women. The whole city was living in fear.Angela, with her OCD, was fixated on the disappearances. She was determined to find some sort of pattern to it all and to discover who was responsible. As she dove deeper and deeper into her research, she began to regress to her worst OCD symptoms, scratching her skin, pulling out eyelashes and losing sleep. She was losing control. Finally, her research led her to the person who committed the crimes but immediately after contacting the police with the proof, she disappeared, becoming the fifth victim. In 2019, Rory realizes she is now responsible for her father's notorious client, dubbed The Thief by the press. The Thief has a parole hearing before she could possibly find him another attorney so she, reluctantly, helps secure his release.Eventually, the stories converge and all is revealed.WHAT I LOVEDThe suspense was fantastic! The name of The Thief is revealed about 2/3rds of the way through the book, yet the book still maintains the element of surprise. I have to admit I was shocked to find out The Thief's identity. It was not at all what I was expecting.I loved the Chicago setting, it was a perfect place and time for the story. The dual time frames, 1979 and 2019, worked well with the plot particularly in regard to how technology is used to solve crimes now versus in 1979.I loved the idea of a main character with autism before anyone understood the condition. I can't imagine what she would have gone through.I enjoyed Charlie Donlea's writing style, she uses enough detail to make you feel the setting and the characters without slowing the plot.WHAT I DIDN'T LOVEAs with many thrillers, there were some coincidences that felt a little unlikely and a couple characters who felt a little too smart or a little too dumb.OVERALLAnother great book by Charlie Donlea. It seems like there could be a series, if so, I would read the next one for sure.
5.0 out of 5 stars Anyone familiar with autism
What an incredibly powerful book. Autism plays a major role in this saga that Donlea assembled. As always, the twists at the end are powerful. A must read. Excellent writing and editing.
3.0 out of 5 stars Believable, character accountability
As much as I liked the premise of this story, even though it’s a familiar plot line, I was disappointed that two characters, Angela suspected as the serial killer, but just disappears without explaintion, they just dropped off the pages. I also questioned, nope, will stop here….. good though!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
This book was great! Loved it. Read it in a day!I can’t wait to read all Charlie Donlea’s books.
Another home run!
Charlie Donlea writes consistently good books that I enjoy immensely, and his thriller Some Choose Darkness definitely hit the mark. This is somewhat an unusual story in that he takes us deep inside the lives of some exceedingly challenged characters, who he portrays sympathetically, with great depth and compassion, and without any hint of condescension. The two primary characters inhabit storylines separated by forty years that share several uncanny echoes, both in storyline and characterization. The story is richly imagined and takes us through some very surprising twists and turns (a Donlea specialty!) on the way to a satisfying conclusion. As always, this is a character-driven thriller, but this author is consistently able to combine deft characterization with tight plotting that propels his characters through the story at a brisk pace. Yet another satisfying read from Charlie Donlea.
Thrilling!!!!
This is one of my favorite books by Donlea. It kept me hooked till the very end. It's a great mystery story and Rory really is one of a kind.
Very nice !
A nice book that reminded me of the early Patricia Cornwell or Kathy Reichs: a cat and mouse game of a smart and unusual murderer and some hunters that are more at the fringe of law enforcement, like Rory. This isn't your "YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THE TWIST!!" kinda book. No, the clues are revealed in a subtle way, and early on I could guess how it would turn out but it is a good thing, it gives the book a certain tranquility and ease that I much appreciated. The author clearly prioritized logic and sense above shock value, and nevertheless still managed to keep the story interesting all along.Rory is a character that I liked. She is quirky and unusual, but still very relatable. I hope that in the next book the character of Lane will be explored more as he seems to be a very interesting man, he's got to be if he is with Rory.So why 4 stars? There are two things that let me down a bit: one is the part where the roses are important (trying to avoid spoilers here). That didn't really made sense to me; almost to a point of paranormal and that wouldn't fit with the rest of the storyline. And second is the part where Rory is supposed to solve a young girls' murder which isn't of any relevance and isn't even closed off. The book could have done with an extra 50 pages to follow-up on this and present the reader with some closure. But all in all, I enjoyed it very much and I'm off to the second volume.
