This is one of the best books I've ever read regarding the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. John has done extensive research and read Many books to be able to write this book, He never says that he is a member of Alcoholics Anonymous but he sure has a great understanding of what goes on in AA meetings and in the AA Society. I would recommend this book to anyone that would really like to improve their life. Right now at our church the minister is preaching on the steps and continues to reference this book. I have selected several books from the notes in the back of the book to purchase and to read. John is an incredible writer and speaker. I've heard him preach several times and it's always inspiring and educational.

I highly recommend Steps by John Ortberg. As a recovering alcoholic who has been sober for over 25 years, I have read countless books on the Twelve Steps, but this one stands above the rest. Steps is not just about addiction. It is about the things that keep all of us stuck: fear, shame, control, trauma, and the struggles we carry but rarely talk about.Ortberg brings a depth of wisdom and honesty that sets this book apart. He writes not just as a pastor or a teacher but as someone who has wrestled through pain and brokenness. His words aren’t just insightful, he lives them.I truly believe this book has the potential to change how people, especially the church, understand the Twelve Steps. It is more than a recovery tool, it is a path to healing, freedom, and profound transformation for anyone willing to take it. Ortberg’s gift is in how he tells the story, weaving together truth, struggle, and hope in a way that pulls you in.This book takes you to the hardest places but doesn’t leave you there. It walks you through the valleys and points you toward something greater. It is a journey worth taking, everyone should read this book.

Highly recommended for ALL hoping to live a better life, whether an addict or just a regular person trying to do better. This book has a lot of perspective from someone who has been through some things. I’ve never met John Ortberg, but I’ve read enough to know he’s been through some pain. Flawed messengers often have the best messages, and that is absolutely true with this book. You will be so glad you read this book. I just finished the final chapter and intend to read it again.

I was so happy to see John come out with a new book and it doesn’t disappoint. Steps is in the universe of books that only Ortberg and Dallas Willard can write. Clear in life application, motivating and consistent with scripture. This will be the new book I give to people really looking to know how to get on track with God and life. John was the teaching pastor at Willow Creek when I became a Christian in 2000. His sermons are the only ones that I can remember almost word for word. It all goes back in the box. Living an ordinary day with Jesus. These were all sermons before books. Thank you John for enriching my life so deeply with your dedication to understanding God and helping others to apply it to their lives. Say hi to Nancy. WillOBrien

I have read many types of material on related subject matter- This is the first I have read that takes a more straight forward and honest approach to really tough subjects- But does so NOT being heavy handed or judgmental.

I like both authors, although I like Dallas Willard more. While there is clearly a market and need for such a book, I am not it. Sorry guys.Update. It improved significantly about a third of the way through.

I first discovered this book as a suggestion from Audible. It is life changing for anyone! While it can certainly save your life from deadly addictions, the thought provoking steps to leading life on life’s terms are applicable to probably 98.9 % of people.
