Understanding radio communications systems unlocks a new way to look at the world and the radio waves that connect it. This book also focuses on the world of amateur, or “ham,” radio, a global network of hobbyists that experiment and communicate with radio waves. The reader can learn what amateur radio is, how one can obtain an amateur radio license, and how various pieces of amateur radio hardware work.
Rather than overwhelm withformulas and numerical approaches, this book presents an easy-to-follow qualitative approach to the theory aspects of radio―perfect for those with little to no knowledge of electromagnetism, signal processing, or hardware development. Instead, instruction focuses on hands-on learning. Radio waves are easy and inexpensive to manipulate with modern hardware, so the examples throughout this text provide ample opportunity to develop an understanding of such hardware.A special focus is given to applications of radio communications in the modern world. In every chapter, the reader gains new insight into different radio communications systems and the hardware and software that makes it all possible. Projects include using a software-defined radio to download live images of the Earth from weather satellites,Arduino-based digital radio communications networks, making amateur radio contacts, and more.

I bought this book for science fair and fun weekend project ideas for my two teenage sons as we were studying for our ham radio license. The book reads conversationally - as if you are learning from a more-experienced friend. It uses all the terminology, but it's very easy to understand. The book's projects include prices and where to order materials. The step-by-step directions are easy to follow. We are very happy with it. It gives the boys interesting ways to use their new skills that are challenging and impressive without being too difficult to accomplish.

This is overall an excellent text. I have a general grasp of a few scientific topics but am a complete novice when it comes to radio, so I decided to go with this book over some others that are more specific to things like amateur radio. I can honestly say that after reading this book I feel that I have a solid grasp of radio communications. I felt that the pace was perfect, and the instructional content intuitive and very clearly explained. I especially liked the numerous real-world examples. I definitely plan to recommend this to friends and family as this is such an important topic in today’s society.I’m giving the book four stars for now as I have not gotten the opportunity to complete the projects. When I finish them, I will go back through and update my rating.

I am thinking of getting a ham radio license so I turned to this book. I’m glad I did. The print is large enough to read easily and the book is written in a way that is understandable.

I was lucky enough to get a preprint of this book - as an aspiring HAM, this is by far the best resource I've found. This book assumes no knowledge of physics or radio theory, and builds up a conceptual understanding through very clearly written explanations and examples. I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone looking for a strong introduction the world of radio.

I had no experience with radio communication before reading this book and I honestly feel like I now know quite a bit. The fact that this book uses approachable descriptions rather than formulas (like other books) is really helpful.
