5.0 out of 5 stars Vision Quest Rules!
This is a great book for anyone who likes a good story, but especially if you are interested in amateur wrestling! A REALLY GOOD READ!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great representation of life in the 70's
This book will likely offend people who judge history by today's standards. This book is a very accurate portrayal of life in the 1970's for a teenager. The movie Vision Quest was based on this book, but there are very marked differences between the two. I really enjoyed the book, having seen the movie as a teen and having grown up during that time. A lot of nostalgia and good memories.
4.0 out of 5 stars Stands On It's Own
I saw the movie first, it's one of my favorites. In my experience of them both, the book was not better or worse than the movie, simply different. I know that in nearly every case I'd expect the book to be better (since you can fit much more into a book than you can in a 2 hour movie), but there are exceptions.I really liked the book very much and it will join the list of books I occasionally re-read, however if you're looking for a book that essentially gives you a longer and deeper experience than the movie, I don't think you'll get that. The book stands on it own merits. The screenwriter did a masterful job of making the movie it's own experience, and Matthew Modine did an incredible job of making the lead part his own as well. But in the book I particularly liked the way the book brought me into the Louden's very private thoughts as he finished high school, some of them sexual, all of them honest and genuine...the stuff we don't normally share with anyone else. There are a small number of movies that for me, have a slight edge over the book (2001: A Space Odyssey, Bagger Vance, The Godfather, etc.), and in this case, I have to give the movie a slight edge too. But the book, beyond question in my mind, is a very good read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Different from the movie; they're both great
The book differs from the movie in many ways (I won't spoil anything important here). It's a first person, present tense narrative, so you really get into Louden's head and see everything from his point of view as he experiences them, unfiltered by memory processing. Books do this much better than movies, which have to externalize conflict (though even the movie uses voice over at the beginning and end). That's also perhaps a weakness in the book for some readers, as the supporting characters aren't as fleshed out as in the movie (usually it's the other way around); there is not as much conflict between Louden and the supporting cast in the book. The main conflict is in Louden's head, and the supporting characters are dealt with more impressionistically. Like the Irving quote states, it's a very honest look into the head of a teenager (lots of talk about sexual feelings; I imagine this could be a main reason the book isn't taught in school). It's well written in an understated way, almost like reportage. You're getting daily bulletins into the psyche of the American teenager. Both the film and the novel capture the hyperbolic struggle that is adolescence. A quest is a search for a particular item; Indiana Jones goes on quests. A vision quest is for the rest of us, perhaps more modest but with even greater stakes than some adventure for fortune and glory; it's about finding one's very identity, about where we fit into the circle of life. We have no idea what we're looking for, but, win or lose, we know when we've found it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for wrestlers
As a middle-aged guy who decades ago gobbled up most of Tom Robbins, Carlos Castaneda, Kurt Vonnegut, Hunter Thompson and others who wrote from the time and place that gave birth to classic rock and roll (which defines those authors' collective sensibility as best as I can), I thought that I had run out of books that could return me to that source. Therefore, I was delighted to stumble upon Vision Quest (first published in 1979) at this point in my life. It transported my spirit back in time and restored in me some fresh understanding, idealism and hope. Author Terry Davis put it best: "There are periods in our lives, I think, when we're almost invincible, and then other periods when we're vulnerable as birds' eggs. I wrote Vision Quest about one of those invincible times."The book is inspiring, hilarious, connected, grounded, and philosophical without being dogmatic. The characters became the friends of my youth. While the story centers on and has a special appeal for wrestlers, it's about more than wrestling. It's about everything. I highly recommend it.
3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting characters & backdrop
The story includes unique characters that are often different than their portrayal in the movie. It is always interesting to see how the novel is different from the movie. This is one of the rare cases where the movie is better. (Ordinary People is the only other case that comes to mind.). The author was lazy in his writing of the final chapter. Additionally, Louden's thoughts on sexuality often seem as if they are for shock value instead of plot or character development.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Excellent Excellent Read.
Great book. Go find it and read it and think about it for weeks, I have. I find myself going back into the book, reading a chapter here, a chapter there......What an awesome book, I wish I would have read this when i was in high school....If I where an english lit teacher or philosophy prof. this would be manditory reading. I guess since I am originally from spokane that I can relate to this story in certain ways, but then again, I think so can alot of people, but not everyone unfortunately. You will know once you read this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great coming of age tale
The movie brought me here but I really enjoyed the book. It is a coming of age tale about a young man trying to find his place in the world.
non male
Pensavo il libro descrivesse meglio le vicende narrate nel film, ma la lettura è un po pesante... Molto meglio il film !!
