Emperor Titus: The Right Hand of Vespasian

Description:

Emperor, general, and Vespasian's right hand, Titus Flavius Vespasianus (better known as simply Titus) was remembered by the Romans as a leader to be celebrated and a deity to be worshiped. While he was not without fault--having committed numerous egregious transgressions--his life and achievements are undeniably impressive. He survived imperial turnover, lived through the great fire of Rome, presided over the empire as Vesuvius destroyed numerous cities and plague ravaged his homeland, and hosted Rome's vaunted 100-days of games.

This book draws on the scant historical sources, the archaeological record, and modern academic commentary to present the most comprehensive available account of Titus' life. Long neglected by historians, Titus' significant role in Roman history is presented here in the fullest detail. Hero or villain, there are few pivotal historical figures like Titus who straddled more momentous history and whose effects are still felt today.

“Hyden’s account of the Roman-Jewish War of the First Century will stun every reader with the scale of bloodshed and destruction. It ultimately paved the way for the short emperorship of Titus, but at an almost unimaginable cost. Hyden’s new book is a tour de force through the short, tumultuous life of this unforgettable Roman, and it is history-telling that will rattle you to the core. Bravo!”―Lawrence W. Reed, president emeritus, Foundation for Economic Education

“Marc Hyden is a master at weaving multiple, often conflicting, ancient sources into a single cohesive narrative. As a result, we are left with a detailed account of the life of Titus, illustrated in vibrant colors. By far, this is the authoritative guide to all things Titus!”―Petros Koutoupis, host of

“Emperor Titus: The Right Hand of Vespasian” is a thrilling and richly detailed portrait of one of Rome’s most fascinating, but historically neglected, leaders. This biography brings Titus to life in vivid fashion, and it recounts his rise through the ranks, involvement in the year of the four emperors, time as a military commander in Judaea where he sacked and destroyed Jerusalem, controversial service as Vespasian’s right hand, and his short tenure as emperor in which the Colosseum was completed. Scrupulously researched but highly readable, Hyden’s book offers both intellectual depth for experts and accessibility for casual readers. This is a must-buy for anyone with an interest in ancient Rome or Jewish history.

This is the quintessential true Roman story. War, coups, intrigue, and love, “Titus” truly has it all. With evocative prose and meticulously researched historical insight, this biography captures the drama of a man who lived through some of Rome’s most turbulent and exciting times. It’s a captivating and balanced biography that breathes new life into a complex, but overlooked, Roman. How no one had ever before published a comprehensive historical biography on emperor Titus is beyond me, but Marc Hyden has done so with great aplomb.

The history of Rome spans centuries, yet much of it remains obscure to most people. “Emperor Titus: The Right Hand of Vespasian” provides a much needed light into a fascinating era in the Empire's history. From start to finish, Hyden's research and writing skills provide readers with a work that not only brilliantly recounts the life and deeds of an underappreciated Emperor, but also firmly anchors this biography with much needed background and context regarding world Titus lived, and for a brief time, ruled. More importantly, he presents all of this information in an entertaining and easily readable manner. The result is a work is both accessible to casual readers and utterly engaging to serious Roman history buffs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding biography for one of Rome’s lesser known yet highly consequential emperors

This books pulls you in and never lets go. I’m an amateur Roman history buff, however I never heard of Emperor Titus until I read this book. The author provides an excellent background into Titus’s early life, his accomplishments as a Roman military commander and his to service to his father, Emperor Vespasian. Throughout the pages, you come to know Titus, his accomplishments, his struggles and the brief time in which he ruled Rome. Titus was emperor during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and while his rule was indeed short ( only 2 years) he still left a lasting legacy that this book does an exceptional job of fleshing out. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in Roman history!
