The Hand Grenade (Weapon, 38)

Description:

The Hand Grenade is the dramatic story, covering its origins, development, use - in the World Wars and into the present day - and lasting influence on close-quarter combat and infantry tactics.

Allowing the user to inflict damage on his opponent within throwing range without leaving cover, the portable, lethally efficient hand grenade is a ubiquitous weapon of modern warfare, and has now found its way into law-enforcement arsenals too. In this engaging study the origins, development, combat use and lasting legacy of the military hand grenade are explored and assessed, accompanied by specially commissioned full-color artwork and an array of revealing photographs of grenades in use and in close-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gordon Rottman is an excellent writer and Historian

Gordon Rottman is an excellent writer and Historian. As with most Osprey editions, they are intended as introductions to the particular subject matter. He does this very well for the major belligerents in WW1 & WW2. "The Hand Grenade" provides the essential information for the development, and employment of hand grenades, from its early historical development to its modern incarnations. As with most Osprey editions, the artwork and photos are excellent. This booklet is a fine addition to my Military History library.

The Hand Grenade has been around for many centuries. This volume on Hand Grenade focuses on grenades used for killing. It provides a history of the development of the hand grenade in general and by nation for many nations and what armed forces in many nations use today. This Osprey Weapon book is the first I have looked at. I have over 500 Osprey titles and enjoy reading and benefit from the information contained in the volumes.

A good well written history of the hand grenade as a weapon, with description and pictures of the various types used. Excellent investigation and research as usual by Mr. Rottman. Tactics are covered better in the Osprey Tactics series. This book is more on development of the different kinds of grenades and uses for each and how well they met the user's needs. Recommended.

Well written book on the history and technical aspects of this vital tool of the infantryman. It guides you on a journey of the development of the grenade and through the ins and outs of development. The recounting of the pressure of designers to make grenades safe thwarting their effective use through overly complicated steps is an object lesson to always seek the perspective of the user.

Boring..rather boring

So far the weakest of this series. Boring stuff from the old times and rather rare infos about modern grenades. No look out for future development such smart grenades etc. Save your money

A nasty piece of work?

D.G. · March 1, 2016

If all you want is an easy to read and concise introduction to this ‘nasty’ but arguably essential little weapon this is an excellent place to start as the subject could potentially be massive covering I suspect most Countries. How many people have not heard of either the ‘Mills Bomb’, ‘Stick grenade’ or 'Pineapple grenade' at some point? The numbers produced are quite staggering. Rottman possesses an enjoyable style that covers the essential basics without becoming overly technical and the book is spattered (no pun intended) with some very good diagrams plus ample photographs. If you do wish to get serious there is a mass of information available on the Internet, but I still prefer something more tangible such as this book. Whilst these weapons may cause offence (pun intended) to some, in their defence (pun intended) as collectors items they have one major advantage over many other military weapons – if you own one (de-activated of course) then it has not actually hurt anybody, unlike collecting guns, swords or daggers. All in all I am well pleased with this purchase.

Fact checking?

G.v.G. · March 11, 2015

Handy overview of the subject - however, as a general remark, it seems that Osprey is bringing out books at an ever faster clip and fact-checking is a bit neglected here and there. In this particular case, it is stated on p. 14 that the "EY" marking on Lee-Enfield grenade launching rifles refers to the inventor/designer "Edward Yule". However, this person (sometimes spelled "Edgar Yule" or "Youlle") seems to be a mythical character, and the inventor of the cup discharger was in fact one Robert Burn, an army officer from New Zealand, who in May 1919 was granted UK patent 126,692 for his invention. It has also been claimed that the mysterious "EY" was the "inventor" of the wire wrapped stock, but that was hardly a new idea, and not something that could have been patented, or acknowledged by the War Office to the extent of marking weapons with the "inventor's" initials.
