5.0 out of 5 stars Makes the history of art accessible to younger children

H.t.b.G. · December 11, 2024

I didn’t encounter a true art history book until the old standby Jansen, the history of art. That would have been overwhelming to my grandchildren who love, art, museums, and any art exhibit. This book allows them to explore the world of art in a very meaningful and very readable fashion. I would recommend it for every child, elementary and middle school – maybe even as an entry-level in high school. Every child should have exposure to art and this book is well written and very comprehensive. I have purchased it for all three families of grandchildren.

My son really enjoyed this book!He found it fun, easy to read, and full of interesting facts. It really kept his attention, and he kept coming back to read more every day. As a parent, I love seeing him so engaged with reading. Highly recommend for curious young minds!

4.0 out of 5 stars High-quality but not comprehensive

B.H. · September 21, 2025

The media could not be loaded. I love the book. It’s beautiful. It has high-quality photos. I like how it goes through the subject matter starting with the principles of art before getting into famous work. It mostly focuses on painting, but it does have sections for sculpture, photography, music, and dance. I am however very, unhappy that they used the wave of Kanagawa as they’re back cover art, and it’s not covered once in the book. Seems like kind of a slight.

Got this for my great niece, who is a budding artist, and she loved it. Her mother said that she sat and read it non-stop for three days, as she was fascinated by the various art and styles of art that she had not known before.

A wonderful insight in Arts

M. · April 13, 2024

Very reader friendly

Great for painting arts, could explore a bit deeper the other arts listed

S. · August 16, 2025

Great book with quick drops of important highlights in the arts history. Never boring nor tiring, this book achieves the task of delivering a fine overview of arts, major about painting but also with some fine insights about sculpture, dance, music and photography. I was expecting a nice book to introduce and discuss arts with my kids and it came to be above my expectations. Could be a bit more detailed in the other arts (it is unevenly focused on painting arts). Yet, I recommend this book sure it is a great acquisition for every home library.

Price might be steep, but worth it.

Textbooks are expensive thats no surprise. I bought this book for my art inspiration and to learn more. The colours are extremely vidid and true to the original. Very informative and I’ve learned alot already.

Wonderful book

i.e. · October 26, 2022

Very interesting illustrations and organised informations

Beautiful book but can cover more.

D. · September 25, 2017

The book is beautiful and has a good summary of many types of art. Although it can definitely cover more types and more breadth within each art type. They did a good job for Painting, but others lack breadth such as Music, none of the modern music genres are covered. Ceramics can also be included and elaborated next to Sculpture, as it is an amazing art form. There's more to like Dance, Photography and even blacksmithing and wood-carving too.
