The Orphanage by the LakeBy Daniel G. Miller4.25 ⭐️I enjoyed reading The Orphanage by the Lake written by Daniel G. Miller. The story was suspenseful and easy to follow. There were some twists and turns along the way. I definitely wanted to keep reading the entire way through the book.I loved the Female Main Character, Hazel Cho. She was funny, smart, and a little bit quirky. She was the perfect character for her role in the story. We get to follow Cho, who is a Korean Private Investigator, through her case of a missing girl from Upstate New York. We also meet some other characters along the way that each has their own solid personality and purpose in the story.I especially loved the setting focus on minorities in this book. Mostly minority women/girls, but there are a couple of men that are also minorities. If you like crime thrillers, especially ones where it feels like you are helping solve the case as you read, then this book will likely be a good fit for you. I do caution you to look at the trigger warning first to be sure this book is a good fit before you purchase it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly capturing read! You need his book in your collection!
I'm a sucker for a good thriller and purchased this book on a hunch and a whim. I can tell you, that was one of the best spontaneous purchases I've ever made! I am a stay at home mom with a full schedule, and still got this book read in two weeks! I could not put it down! This has been one of the best books I've read. The suspense builds and builds, and just when you think you've figured it out it turns a curve. It will have you thinking, and it made me feel like I was on this adventure with the main character. I found myself gasping out loud, and shushing those around me to dive deeper into this beautifully written story. Very relatable, down to Earth, and then when you finally get to the parts where you find out what happened, it gets deeper still. I cannot say enough about this book, but what it is, is a mouthwatering, suspenseful, thrilling roller coaster of mystery and crime that will leave you wanting more! I can't wait for the next book to come out in July this year!!!
3.0 out of 5 stars Trigger Warning: Pedophilia
Over all good book, just wish there was a trigger warning for the end. Disgusting. I would have never read this book had I known. I'm not one to get triggered easily, but that was too much. It doesn't go into a lot of detail, but enough to turn your stomach.
4.0 out of 5 stars storyline kept me interested
I really enjoyed this book. The dialogue between hazel and Andrew was terrible though. It didn't seem like it could have been a real convo.
5.0 out of 5 stars This story captivates you!
Daniel Miller writes this novel in the first person as the protagonist- the detective narrates the story with passion, building up a history for the main character, who is a female private investigator. She is hired by a mysterious woman to ascertain what happened to her goddaughter, who “disappeared “ from the orphanage. The detective meets several people along the way, but soon realizes that all is not what it appears to be.There are many twists and turns along the way, leading to the unexpected conclusion. I enjoyed the book.

New twists at every turn!
The book kept you engaged til the end. Never knowing what is going to happen next. Kept me intrigued. Fantastic.
Gripping, hard to put down book.
Gripping psychological thriller. Bought this originally for my mother in law who passed it back within a week for me to read because it was so good. Couldn’t put it down. Standard sized book for its genre. Worth a read. Will look for similar books by the same author.
Well done.
I found the main character a little challenging and hard to relate to, but the developing story was intriguing. Worth persisting and was a really good read.
