I was introduced to Freida McFadden's books a year ago by my son’s wife, who loves McFadden’s books, and I've been hooked on them ever since. I did not read the books in the chronological publication order, and this did not affect my enjoyment. Each stands alone. I read all of the more than twenty books during this time and enjoyed each of them. Each was so gripping, so interesting, and suspenseful that I couldn't put them down until I finished them. As a result, I read each in a single day. I also read other books during this period, such as Tarzan books by Burroughs and thrillers by Stephen King, which I also liked. All are great. But only McFadden books were impossible to put down; each day I read them, I couldn't put them down.In the Preface of "The Surrogate Mother," we read how our protagonist tells us that someone was murdered and everyone, including her husband, the police, her best friend, and her lawyer, is convinced she killed the person. Her lawyer advises her to plead guilty, assuring her that she will only receive a fifteen-year sentence. If she goes to trial, she will, without any doubt, be found guilty and be sentenced to life in prison without parole. She refuses, saying she is innocent. This Preface grabs our interest, and we are drawn to find out what happened. We are then told what occurred a year earlier and learn that she is unable to bear a child and decides against her husband’s advice to allow her assistant at work, who looks like her but is a decade younger than her, to have her husband’s sperm placed in her, become pregnant, and give the child to her and her husband. But many things go wrong.The book is filled with interesting people. We discover that some seemingly innocent people are evil, and seemingly evil and unkind people are good. There are red herrings, twists and turns, inexplicable events, and surprise endings.It is a delight.

I just love Freid’s book I wanted to go back to reading and this is how I chose to start it ! She incredible at the beginning of the book it was kinda “obvious” on the storyline yet she made me feel bad for assuming lol its great book it makes you u think just as well puts doubts in you how its going to end! Such a good book!

I couldn’t put this book down! The story was engaging, and the characters felt real and relatable. It kept me hooked from start to finish, and I actually finished it in a single day. Highly recommend for anyone who loves a fast-paced, emotional read.

I love McFadden's books, and I've read almost every one....maybe that's the problem here....it follows a very predictable plot line found in a lot of her novels. I had the mystery figured out in the first few chapters.

Frieda never disappoints, and in my opinion this is one of her best. Interesting characters that you become invested in, twists you don’t see coming, snappy dialogue, and such a smooth buildup to the climax, you almost don’t even notice things changing it’s brilliant, I never write reviews but I had to for this one, it had me obsessed and I almost never finish a book as fast as I finished this one. 10/10 for me, highly recommend it!!

The storyline had me very irritated most of the book because it was so “predictable” which is never true with Frieda’s books. So I knew later on I’d be surprised by the twist, which of course I was! JAW DROPPING. MORE THAN ONCE. But leading up to that, it was too predictable where it was almost boring because I always knew what was about to happen.

Hier findet sich alles, was ich an Freida McFadden, der Spezialistin für verblüffende, unvorhersehbare Wendungen in ihren Thrillern, liebe.Einige Charaktere, über die man sich wundern oder ärgern kann, andere, mit denen man mitfühlen kann, ein paar überraschende Twists, die die Handlung immer wieder auf den Kopf stellen, und ein Spannungsbogen, der sich vom ersten bis zum letzten Kapitel kontinuierlich aufbaut und mich auf die Auflösung hinfiebern ließ.

Despite knowing what's coming, this is still an action packed read with a few twists, turns and surprises. A great read.
