Editorial Reviews

Review

"DSM-5-TR Made Easy is a master class in modern psychopathology. Morrison's meticulously detailed reviews of each major mental disorder provide the reader with an informative and accessible guide for understanding the DSM. Through relevant case examples, Morrison’s text not only enhances our understanding of symptoms, overlapping syndromes, and common comorbid conditions, but also elevates our approach to diagnostic formulations and conceptualizations. This exceptional book is an authoritative resource for clinicians and students at all levels and an ideal text for teaching the next generation of mental health professionals."--David H. Klemanski, PsyD, MPH, Department of Psychiatry, Yale University

"This book supports mental health professionals across their careers, from medical students and psychology interns who are just learning the diagnostic criteria to seasoned psychiatrists who need the newest DSM updates in our constantly evolving field. The book’s structure allows for its use as a quick-reference guide, whether to check criteria for a rare diagnosis or to review a common disorder and the varied ways it can present. Regardless of why you are using
DSM-5-TR Made Easy, Morrison makes the process enjoyable (and validating!) through his self-aware style, vivid case presentations, and awareness that diagnoses don’t always fit into precise boxes."--Meredith Gansner, MD, attending psychiatrist, Boston Children's Hospital

"If DSM-5-TR is the encyclopedia, this book is the manual. Morrison shows you real diagnosing--the thinking processes, integration of data, case formulation for treatment, and so on--not just assigning labels and ICD-10-CM codes. Reading this book is like sitting with a wise and experienced clinician showing you how to weigh and balance the evidence. Even the introductory explanations of how to use the book are excellent guides for teachers and students and will greatly enhance learning. Over 130 superbly constructed cases show exactly how Morrison applies the DSM-5-TR rules and logic. The cases bring the criteria sets and checklists of the DSM to life. This book is suitable as a text in introduction-to-the-profession courses in clinical fields. Anyone reading it will feel like (and will become) a smarter clinician."--Edward L. Zuckerman, PhD, author of
Clinician's Thesaurus

“The book does a wonderful job of explaining the clinical criteria and walking the reader through the reasoning behind the diagnosis….The conversational style allows readers to better digest and put into context diagnostic features of disorders found in the DSM for use in a clinical context.” ―

This is a great partner book for the DSM. It makes the information easily digestible and explains things in more depth. Highly recommend for any therapist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted!

Came perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to school purchase

I bought this for school so i haven't read it yet but my book arrived undamaged and in perfect condition. I skipped through pages and it looks like it will be interesting read. Even includes some coding notes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use/understand

K.D. · May 10, 2025

This was ordered to assist me with studying for my LCSW and to keep on my desk for easy access. It is easier to understand and spells out all the symptoms and diagnosis

3.0 out of 5 stars High expectations

D.D. · January 5, 2025

I had high expectations for this book, but it did not will me as the description said it would be like? However, it's a good book, it gives you more definitive.Symptoms for the different disorders. I like it, but I would've liked to be more. Its almost was like someone telling a story and then giving you what their perspective of the dsm is, but I like it? I keep it readily available in my cars in case I need it to verify some symptoms of people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb. A lifesaver for new clinicians. And publisher sells for less.

W.C. · February 17, 2024

Dr. Morrison is a wonderful writer (I have several of his books). His thorough explanations are not just DSM criteria reviews, but he presents detailed information on how to determine diagnoses in simple, straightforward language.Guilford, the publisher, sells the book for much less on its website, which is where I purchased my copy. They even include free shipping.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good content but poor quality

A.C. · August 16, 2023

This was a required textbook for a class in my MSW program and the spine started ripping before the semester was even over. The actual content of the book was helpful especially the case vignettes. Super disappointed by the quality though.

1.0 out of 5 stars It fell apart…

J. · May 9, 2025

I was hoping to use this book as supplemental material for the NCC NCMHCE, but the first time I opened it the binding fell apart and the pages became detached from the spine. Unfortunately, I did not begin studying for the CCMHC exam until after the Bolo return window closed, so I have no recourse. I would not have expected such poor binding or quality control from the publisher of a $75.00 hardcover reference, but others should be aware that this occurred.

Survived psych training thanks to this book!

C.L. · March 17, 2024

This book has been a life saver in helping me get through the diagnosis course in my psych training. The author provides a detailed breakdown of the diagnostic criteria, a representative clinical vignette and explains fully how the vignette fits the diagnostic criteria. This book translated the DSM into student-friendly language and was essential for differential diagnosis. I bought it as a long-term investment for my many years of practice to come!
