Editorial Reviews

Review

"Leavy once again brings together leading-edge concepts in this articulate, highly readable, and comprehensive second edition. In a vibrant and engaging style, the book unpacks and explains the five foundational research approaches and offers expert tips and practical resources. The second edition sets a new standard for integration of social justice, cultural, and ethical issues in research design, particularly within community-based participatory approaches. This is a 'must-have' book that undoubtedly will be required reading for students and researchers in psychology, social sciences, and education."--Cathy A. Malchiodi, PhD, Trauma-Informed Practices and Expressive Arts Therapy Institute, Louisville, Kentucky

"Most of our doctoral students want to continue in their professional roles or organizations and do not plan to pursue research-intensive positions, so I need a text that will support them in conducting a solid study in an applied setting. Because our students come from diverse fields (educational leadership, hospital administration, and supply-chain management, for example), a text that offers a wide lens on research design is wonderful. I don't know of any other methods texts that are so straightforward and at the same time so inclusive regarding design approaches."--Kristina N. LaVenia, PhD, School of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy, Bowling Green State University

"The second edition builds on the strengths of the first as it continues to offer a wide range of information. The infographics illustrate key concepts, relationships, and the order of operations in a user-friendly manner. The checklists in each chapter are a great resource that ensure all parts of the process are considered and completed. Our students will benefit from the literature review chapter, which emphasizes the 'why' along with the 'how.' Leavy's emphasis on process is key to understanding and selecting appropriate methodologies as students prepare their proposals and conduct their own scholarship."--Pamela K. Brown, EdD, Department of Kinesiology, University of North Carolina at Greensboro

"The second edition of
Research Design provides elegant, accessible writing and pragmatic content for students in the social and behavioral sciences. Unlike other introductory books on general research design, Leavy’s text maintains a strong focus on developing the written proposal, with its constituent elements such as targeted research questions, ethical considerations with participants, and appropriate uses of methodological terms. The second edition includes expanded coverage of the literature review, now in its own chapter, and discusses contemporary issues in arts-based and community-based projects. Leavy is an internationally renowned author who offers undergraduates and graduate students expert guidance on the templates necessary for initiating their studies."--Johnny Saldaña, MFA, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (Emeritus), Arizona State University

"Leavy has a real knack for making complex ideas and methods very easy to understand, which is especially helpful for teaching novice research students. Readers learn the nuts and bolts of research design, which includes a grounding in values, philosophy, and ethics that influence decision making. Readers can use the chapters to inform the development of a research design and proposal."--Tina Maschi, PhD, LCSW, ACSW, Graduate School of Social Service, Fordham University

"In her own measured, methodologically ecumenical way, Leavy manages both to undo some of the stock presumptions of social science research and to radically widen the boundaries of legitimate modes of inquiry. She builds important bridges between quantitative and qualitative approaches, theory and ethical praxis, and, not least, science and art. The result is a clear, thoughtful, and extremely valuable exploration of not only the 'nuts and bolts' of research design but also the purposes, philosophical premises, and concrete methodological practices that characterize social scientific inquiry in its many forms."--Mark P. Freeman, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Society, Department of Psychology, College of the Holy Cross

5.0 out of 5 stars Timely update on an outstanding methods text!

X.N. · December 12, 2022

Fantastic resource for helping students discover and use a variety of different research methods across disciplines. Anyone who teaches research methods with a focus on human participants should keep a copy of this book handy. It brings concepts of equity and social justice to life through detailed examples and thoughtful questions. These illustrations of why good methods practices matter keep readers actively engaged while orienting them to an impressive amount of research vocabulary and techniques. Leavy's text easily outpaces other classic methods books by incorporating a truly inclusive array of research approaches. This text goes beyond the traditional quantitative / qualitative / mixed split to include arts-based and community-based participatory designs, as well as a variety of ideas for weaving the various approaches together. Throughout the front matter and the detailed sections on each approach to research, Leavy brings readers back to the crucial importance of affirming people and lives. Readers will come away from this book not only commanding a spectacular technical vocabulary in research methods, but also a deep understanding of how research can help people achieve empowerment. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Better than the First Edition

P.A. · December 8, 2022

I used the First Edition of this text for an online master's level course in Understanding Educational Research... students read it! and their projects and challenges to other researchers demonstrated a high level of understanding of important issues in research. I appreciated the inclusion of ethics in terms of the field as well as in terms of human subjects, and the attention to community participation and arts-based research. I supplemented the course with experiences in critical conceptual research and public pedagogy; the text left room in a typical university semester to make such additions possible without feeling too crowded. This new edition adds a chapter on literature reviews, and the now-expected companion website with student and instructor materials, which I will try out in my next iteration of my course.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative!

The most innovative book on research design I’ve read. Leavy’s book covers the nuts and bolts of research, ethics, five approaches to research design from more traditional to emergent, and teaches how to write a research proposal. The interdisciplinary research examples throughout are social justice oriented and relatable to today’s students and researchers. Many great teaching tools throughout the book as well as additional resources, a companion website, and supplemental materials (thorough power point lecture slides and chapter tests and answer keys). The best book out there to teach research methods and a great resource for scholars building their own projects. A really well written and smart book. Easy to use as a complete guide to the research design process.

Dr. Leavy's text stands out for user friendly features and innovative work on research design, ethics, and writing literature reviews across disciplines. If you've used her other books, you know they encourage students, professors, and researchers to actively participate immediately--not just read. With this text, student engagement and interest is unmatched. The information on literature reviews clarifies and improves student organization and composition. Instructors will appreciate the immense resources including the slides and test bank. The interdisciplinary and social justice focus makes this text appropriate for a wide range of classes and approaches; students will appreciate the scope and breadth of methods available.Dr. Stacey Coffman-Rosen

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic textbook with detailed instructions for designing types of studies

J.A.M. · May 4, 2023

I ordered this book hoping that it would provide ideas that would help me with revisions to my own book (Maxwell, Qualitative Research Design: An Interactive Approach; see the reviews of my book on Amazon). What I found was a very basic text, appropriate for undergraduate or possibly beginning graduate courses. For those teaching such courses, it provides a clear set of steps for developing a research proposal, listing five possible approaches to research and giving step-by-step guidance for preparing the proposal. For those seeking information on the diversity of current thinking about research design, it will not be particularly helpful.

U.M.A. · December 4, 2022

I had to teach Research Methods without ever having taken it, and this book and additional materials saved my life. Leavy has a clear-eyed view of the many types of research design using realistic examples (my favorite was Arts-Based) that are accessible to any level of budding researcher. I used this for Research Methods in Politics and History, so it's great for any discipline. The additional materials, especially the PowerPoints, clearly written by Leavy herself, not some editor who hasn't read it, were so useful I could assign chapters to my students to present. Love this and love the new cover

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best text for teaching research methods!!!

A.F. · May 6, 2023

The most accessible research design text out there. This is a fantastic book for teaching research methods at the undergraduate or graduate level, and also a must-have resource for any researcher. Leavy’s book is at once an in-depth introduction to research design, from topic selection to ethics to representation, and also a much-needed expansion of the field unlike anything we’ve seen in decades. Other research design texts cover three approaches. Leavy’s unique book covers five approaches in detail, making a significant contribution to the practice and teaching of research methods. Great pedagogical features throughout as well as supplemental web materials. A go-to resource.
