5.0 out of 5 stars It’s about MORE than being left-handed ❤️🧡💛

Highly recommend Lefty: A Story That Is Not All Right by Mo Willems. It provided relatable context for my left-handed daughter, and ultimately it’s a story about identity, self-acceptance, and challenging the idea that there’s only one right way to be. It’s simply amazing how often my daughter and I reference this book lately. Great way to build background knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read aloud!

I was anxiously waiting for this book to arrive. The voice is amusing and the points are well made with exceptional illustrations that are on point! This book is going to fly off the shelves. It’s the perfect gift for all of our brilliant left handed friends and family members.

3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to love it

A.G. · December 7, 2024

I’m a huge Mo Willems fan. I’m a teacher and keep my library stocked with his books and they are consistently reached for by my students. I was so excited to see this release as my daughter is a lefty. While the art in this book is so cool and fun to look at, the story itself seems rushed. The book seems like it wants to be a nonfiction account of the history of left handed people, but very little information is given. Woven throughout is a conversation between the two hands, and it doesn’t add much overall. I don’t think I’m going to give this to my daughter because I worry it may introduce an insecurity in her that being left handed used to be seen as bad, even though the book does explain that is no longer the case. I just think this could have been a fun and informative book but it fell short.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did more harm than good

A.C. · March 8, 2025

My left-handed child never gave a second thought to being left handed - until we read this book. It is harsh, to say the least. Why even put the idea into a kids head that they are less-than?Ultimately the story is one of acceptance, which is nice, I guess. But my kid didn't think she was weird or different or worse than right-handed people until reading this... I wish I could go back in time and never have read it to her.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much negative content

M. · December 5, 2024

I preordered this book because it’s written by Mo Willems. He is a great children’s author.Who doesn’t love Elephant and Piggie and Knuffle Bunny? My 6 year old is left handed, and I thought it would be funny and clever- not so much. There are examples of how people were once treated and labeled for being left handed. These are concepts that young learners won’t understand. It’s too negative and confusing.I think young children may focus on the negativity, rather than the fact that it’s okay to be left handed, or different in any way. I don’t think it’s good for self esteem. And, $18 is a lot for a very short story.Too bad- returning.
